  1. it isn't signing Eyre in principal that sickens me, he could be a good addition to the bullpen. It's signing him FOR THREE FREAKING YEARS. Unless the last two are options, very disappointing.
  2. maybe some of them are option years.... we're doomed....
  3. much better, you knew there's be a little rust...[/u]
  4. We've got the talent wasting away in the minors and/or underused players to get us what we need in a trade. So long as Hendry gets Furcal, which should make sure Neifi doesn't start, i'm fine with that being the major offensive free agent signing. So long as a trade brings us someone impactful for right field. Kevin Mench doesn't do it for me, unless we upgrade another position (center field or something).
  5. Any chance we could somehow trick opposing teams into letting Neifi field, Nomar hit, and convince them that they are the same person? Yeah, probably wouldn't work...
  6. ...I need a drink Seriously, if that bozo is the backup plan, then give Furcal whatever it takes. I don't care....
  7. Nah, I think teams are going to overvalue the 8 extra homeruns and the 100+ RBI's Matsui had. Nevermind that Matsui is 3 years younger. I think Giles gets 4/40, and I'm probably desperate enough to sign it...
  8. At least Pierre would be trying to leg out a hit from the bunt  Plus sometimes Furcal would steal 2nd and we'd bunt him to 3rd 8)
  9. There must be a lot of us looking for more info, marlinsbaseball.com's forums have 184 visitors  By the way, I love that blue kool-aid comes in other colors as well, hehe, at the start of their thread, they're hoping to get Murton and Pie for Pierre
  10. and guys who can steal 50+ bases with a potential .370+ obp. but more importantly, guys who can catch the ball. Just like dem White Sox. See, the Sox showed Hendry that if you score less runs but appear to be "scrappy", you'll win the whole shebang. Hehe, better to try that than depend on "we gots us some long bombers, that'll work out for us!" for ANOTHER season
  11. It's an interesting aquisition if it goes through, you know, do we really still NEED Rafeal Furcal if we pull this deal off? Not that I'll complain with having two "legit" leadoff guys at the top of the order, but I've always liked, in the 2nd hole, to just have a quality hitter. You know, leadoff guy slaps his way on base, ideally steals 2nd, your 2 hole hitter knocks him in, gets himself on base, and hopefully is waiting patiently on 1st for the bombers to slam him in. It all comes down to what we do in right field I suppose. If you land Pierre, that of course makes Corey Patterson redundent (unless he's our starting right fielder  ), so you could probably package him up for our new starting right fielder, or maybe an arm for the pen. Hell, if we get Pierre, I'd go straight to Brian Giles and just say "look, we want him for 3 years...what's the $?". Pierre Walker Lee Giles Ramirez Barrett Murton Cedeno I'll take it... Actually, better go ahead and sign Furcal, or that would be Neifi in the 8 hole :?
  12. Greensburg does make sense, he's unlikely to ever have much of a run with us if he's going to play center, unless Pie fizzles out.
  13. I don't think we'll give up Murton or Cedeno, no way. Everybody knows that Florida is up the creek without a paddle, and I haven't even heard of huge interest out of anyone to get Pierre. I'm going to predict Mitre and another mid level prospect.
  14. He should be our super-sub next year, in fact I would have loved him to play winter-ball at shortstop.
  15. I don't take Hendry's comment as an "up yours" to Nomar, I take it more as a courtesy, to say "look, we won't want you starting at shortstop...we have a third baseman...and we're looking for an impact bat in right. So if you sign here, unless you beat out Murton for left field, you're probably going to be coming off the bench". Which, if Nomar happens to not catch on as a starting shortstop somehow, I'd love to have him to cover the infield and outfields in an emergency :)
  16. If I were The Cubs I would at least bridge the following offer to his agent, even if it's just a courtesy call slash "mild attempt to mend bridges" Minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training, if he makes the big league roster he gets $1 million plus incentives on games played. If he doesn't make the team but thinks his performance will get another team to bite, or even if he is going to make the team but in too limited of a role, he can void his contract. If he wants to hang it up, then he can go out with a huge retirement celebration, including his number being instantly retired. Worst case he tries out in Spring Training, fails, and retires with dignity and as a Cub. Best case he tries out, we're shocked that maybe he has a little left in the tank, and he's our 4th outfielder/pinch hitter next season. Not going to happen of course...
  17. Deal with the Sox, sadly WOULD be a very smart idea. Being a DH would let him focus solely on his hitting, and it would attract the Cubs "Sosa loyalists" to the South Side
  18. I like everything EXCEPT giving up Pie. You're going to go for the short term with Lofton, and not find a way to hold onto a guy who just might be a future All Star? We know that the Phillies are eager to move him, don't give them your best prospect. Try to wow them with a substitute of good prospects we might lose through Rule 5 anyway... I HATE giving up Murton, because it's classic Cubs to give up a guy with his potential, but if it gets Dunn, I can't complain. I'd try to swap someone for him though in that deal, if possible. Cincy doesn't really need outfielders. Any chance of Cincy taking Walker instead? He's cheap, cheap I say... Freel and Lopez are cheaper. I figure in this scenario the Reds could keep Freel in the outfield and let Walker man 2B.
  19. No team will give him 5/50 guaranteed, but what about this scenario? 4/36, 5th year option for 14 million which automatically vests with a certain criteria (say, .850 OPS plus an average of over 130 games started over those 4 years). If the option doesn't vest, the team has a $12 million option or a $2 million buyout, and the player has an $8 million option. That gives them the "5 year 50 million" contract to hype, but only puts us on the hook for $38 guaranteed.
  20. It would be killer to get both Furcal and Giles via free agency, you do that and you can use our trade chips on Dunn...and maybe something crazy like the other Giles for 2B :D
  21. 1 year $5 million? Sure! Anything else? pass...
