    I would still disagree. Tom didn’t want to give that particular contract. The Cubs offer was as good as the Red Sox. So that is not vetoing signing him. That is not structuring a contract a particular way. Bregman could have just as easily taken the Cubs offer as presented and been a Cub. He chose the Red Sox. I also think he knew playing for the Red Sox would make his numbers look better than has been played for the Cubs. That is not Ricketts fault. And, I am not someone who defends Ricketts. I just don’t think saying he vetoed a signing is fair.

    A lot more fist pumping than slow clapping. Again, same reaction as I would have when a roll of the dice goes my way for a big win.

    I must have missed the story of Tom vetoing signing Bregman. When was that reported? He probably put a number on what he would spend, but did he actually tell Jed he couldn’t sign him? BTW, I agree with everything else you said. I just don’t know about that veto of Bregman.

    I actually think what you are doing, is justified. I am doing the same thing. I know the playoffs are a dice roll, but even a dice roll upsets me when it doesn’t go as I want it to. The first photo is what fans of teams winning are doing.

    I don’t blame Jed for not paying the cost at the deadline. I blame him for puttting himself in the position to have to trade for a starter and not realizing what the cost would be. He should have know trading for MOR/TOR (controlled) starting pitcher at the deadline would cost more than he was willing to spend, in the off season. So make a deal then don’t doesn’t get to the TDL.

    Assuming they don’t go after Tucker, which is probably a safe bet, do they sign a different big bat? There are a lot of them. Schwarber, Bellinger, Alonso, Bregman, to name 4. Bellinger actually makes sense with his versatility. He won’t be that huge bat they would want, but he would allow them to replace Tucker with a guy who will make probably $10M AAV less and sign for probably 5 less years. Then sign either Gallen or Cease. If they need to cut cost for these two signing maybe they let Shota walk. They go FA pitcher, Horton, Boyd, Tailon to start the season. Fill in 5th spot with Brown, Rea, Assad or Wicks. They have Steele probably around Memorial Day and Wiggins sometime around the ASB. I am fine with keeping Shota too. But not sure money works for two big signings without moving his money. This is just one option. They can also just trade for a front line starting pitcher if they bought a bat. Mo becomes trade bait. As does every other bat in the system. Look into Ryan, Gore, Alcantara, Cabrera or any other young controlled pitcher that works in the front of the rotation.

    I think this is Roger’s making two separate statements that, while the first one is probably true (they won’t resign him), the second one can’t be proven wrong. The only way his second comment can be proven wrong is if they actually do sign him. To me this is an easy thing to report and claim you were right. I do think his productivity this year gives a lot of people pause on wanting him to sign here. So I would not be surprised if the Cubs don’t even really make any kind of an offer. But, to me, that doesn’t mean they never considered it. Just like many here have changed their mind on Tucker, I think that could have very well happened to the Cubs. End result is he won’t be here. Just dont think there is a way to prove either way if it was the original plan or not.

    Ok, fine. So even if he does trend like the others, does that mean if his WAR is 5 next year than he will trend down to 3 in the 5th year? Using your criteria would be that be the case? Wouldn’t that be a total of 20WAR over 5 years? Well with the 5/$125.

    Besides that, how scientific is Stratos assessment of Hoerner faltering from a 4 WAR player to a 2 WAR player in 5 years? I would suggest it isn’t very scientific and strictly made up numbers.

    I’m already on record of not liking the idea of Boyd. I would have went Assad. But that doesn’t mean they win if Assad pitches. Boyd was a reasonable option among all less than ideal options. Then, after they went Boyd in game 1, Imanaga was on obvious choice in game 2. He was good against Milwaukee this year. He even pitched a decent game during his bad stretch, against the Brewers. You are just ranting things that can’t be proven. And your personal attach on Counsel does not help your credibility, therefore I said NONSENSE.

    Even if he isn’t extended the Cubs will need to make a decision about him after next season. So it is a discussion worth having. What makes you think the Cubs don’t value him?

    Not true. If the Cubs decide not to turn his contract into a 5/$80m at the end of this season he can opt out. They paid him $23m so far. So if they don’t want him for $57m the next 3 years the would then leave it up to him if he wants to stay in the same 4/$53M he currently has. If he doesn’t he is a FA.

    I would say from the Cubs standpoint Marte contract is a good guide. Nico is close in age to Marte’s age when he signed compared to when Nico will be up. But I think the Dbacks got a deal with Marte. I would expect Nico closer to $22M a year. Maybe 1 less year.

    You say this, and it makes perfect sense. But earlier you said if an extension cost much more than 5/$100M you are walking. And, again, you proved it should be more than that. So do you just not want Nico, even realizing he is worth it? Is 5/$115 too much for you to consider? Shouldn’t Nico expect that?

    They won the season series against the Brewers, Dodgers, Red Sox, Yankees, & Guardians. That is 5 playoff teams out of the 11 other playoff teams. They tied the Padres. They didn’t just beat lousy teams.

    Because then Boyd gets 2 road games. If Boyd pitches game 1 he gets game 4 at Wrigley. Keep in mind I am not saying I like the decision on Boyd. Just thinking of reasons it could have been made. Boyd has a huge difference in home versus road numbers. You want him at Wrigley. As for game 5, my guess is the plan would have been Shota. But that is really an everyone available game even if it starts with Shota. Just remember we are talking about this after 2 failed starts. I am saying the Counsell decision was prior to the 1st game. We didn’t know it would end this bad. On paper I would have rather it been Boyd, Imanaga, Tailon, Boyd, Imanaga. I am sure that was the Cubs thinking too. Just didn’t work.

    I think if there is a game 4 it will be Quintana. I would think the Brewers would hold Peralta to game 5, hoping they can win without him in game 4 and have him ready to start the next series. I think that is why they went with a pen day yesterday. Also, I didn’t want Boyd on short rest either. But I do understand the thought process. If he can give you 12 outs he then lines up for game 4, on normal rest at Wrigley. Boyd has been really good at Wrigley. If we are being honest, there were no really good options. Counsell picked one and it didn’t work. Same with game 2. I think Imanaga was the obvious choice. He pitched well against the Brewers this year and even with giving up a crazy amount of homers, but for his last start of the regular, did fine for 6 weeks leading up to the playoffs. Even with giving up homers his era was under 4.
