  1. I’m not sure Flexen can sustain what he is doing. I think he is striking out 5 guys per 9 innings. I don’t think they see him as a starting pitcher. I would guess he is more likely to be cut than to be the every 5th day starting pitcher on the Cubs.
  2. I had mentioned the exact same players a few days ago. So obviously I agree with you. I think the Cubs make their bench better by improving their starting line up and putting Shaw in the bench. That one deal would improve the line up, the bench and the rotation.
  3. I agree. That is why I don’t expect him to be traded until close to the deadline. I am sure if the Cubs offered Cassie, Alcantara and Wiggins now the Marlins would take the deal. But I don’t see the Cubs doing that. So Marlins will wait until they realize no one will give that much away.
  4. I can acknowledge Nico didn’t make a great throw. But IMO had Busch went right to the bag and had Nico not had to try to hit a moving target, the play would have been made. Had Busch went to the bag, even though Nico’s throw wasn’t great, Busch would have time to adjust and make the play easier. And I also think had Busch went straight to the bag Nico makes a better throw.
  5. I think Alcantara will be pricey. Probably more than most of us would want. But Bowden is ridiculous. I think someone else posted something like Cassie and a minor league pitching prospect not named Wiggins for Alcantara. That is probably close. Maybe the Cubs have to add a 3rd piece that is not a top 30 in the system.
  6. You are right that era could not capture runs they gave up coming into an inning with guys on base. But honestly, I think that may have happened less than a handful of times. Seems most times cubs starters finish an inning and the pen takes over from there. I have seen a pen arm come in to replace another pen arm, but that would show on the overall pen era.
  7. I am just going to agree to disagree. Busch made a bad play, not Nico. Because Busch was out of position Nico had to try leading him. If he went right to the bag the play is made easily. Even with the throw not being perfect, it was more on Busch than Nico. Had Busch been where he should have been at the proper time he could have adjusted easier. I am not suggesting the throw by Nico was great. I am saying Busch made Nico make a harder throw than he normally would have had to make. And that said, the ball still hit Busch’s glove on a fly. I agree that no error should have been charged, but because of Busch’s original actions it turned into a tough play that normally wouldn’t have to be tough.
  8. It hit him in the glove. How is that a bad throw? He got it to him in the air and to his glove. He lobbed it a little to give Busch time to get back. The throw was a little strange but that is because Busch was out of place. Has Busch just went to first it would have been an easy out.
  9. I think Cabrera will be the first to go when either Imanaga or Hodge comes back. After that a real decision needs to be made for the second pitcher to take action on. Is it Horton or Brown to AAA or Flexen released? If I had to guess, if Flexen is still getting the job done when this decision has to be made the Cubs will send Brown down. Limit his innings a bit and let him work on a 3rd pitch. I still think he can be a good starter, so the demotion isn’t because of his ability. It would be more to limit innings and monitor him closely.
  10. And if Busch goes to first on that first ball they get the out. He didn’t do that bad. The rbi was on a ball hit 68 mph.
  11. I know your point. I am just saying I don’t want Wilson from the Red Sox. TBH I don’t want Chapman either, but mainly because I don’t think he is a closer I would want. I am more concerned about that than I am his actions over a decade ago. If the Cubs go after a relief pitcher he needs to be a sure 9th inning guy. Chapman isn’t that.
  12. An example of a guy I have no interest in. I know that isn’t your point. But to me Justin Wilson no different than any pen arm the Cubs currently have. He is a middle relief pitcher who may or may not be good the rest of the year.
  13. Imanaga comes back and they trade for a solid starter. That is a rotation 4 deep and they still have Horton. Maybe Assad comes back and helps. Maybe Counsell does a bullpen day every so often. I don’t see them getting 2 starting pitchers.
  14. Ok, just going to put this out there. Cubs are not going to replace Turner. They may get a bench bat, maybe even Burger. But he won’t replace Turner. They need to upgrade for either Berti or Brujan. But even that isn’t that important to me. Not because they don’t need one. But because no one they could get is a sure upgrade over someone they can bring up from AAA to fill the bench spot.
  15. I agree with this. I don’t think sending Brown down for 15 days or even a little more to work on a 3rd pitch and then maybe sending Horton down a bit with the same excuse is actually anything all that creative. I don’t have a problem with letting Rea start a few games either,!if that saves 6 innings from Horton. A trade for one starter and then smart use of Brown, Horton and Rea should allow both Horton and Brown to have a few innings in them come the playoffs. Neither would start in the playoffs, so they might not get that many innings. I don’t think anyone is exaggerating the amount of innings the Cubs need to save. No idea has them shutting down either pitcher. Just allowing them to miss maybe 3 starts while also limiting the Rea starts.
  16. There are no tea leaves whatsoever. Jed has never alluded to Tucker being a rental, as a fact. Only those who want to be negative about everything read or listen to anything Jed says and turn it into a negative statement. That said, Cubs still might not get Tucker after this year. I think they have a better chance than any other team in the game. But even the best chance is probably only a 30-35% chance. I just disagree it is a forgone conclusion he will not be here after this year.
  17. I’m not sure I trust Little to throw strikes. However, I am still not sold on Cabrera either.
  18. Maybe you are right. In your scenerio how do they limit Horton? Do you have them starting Rea with Horton going to the pen? Or are you suggesting a second starting pitcher via trade? I am pretty sure you agree Horton cannot pitch every 5th game without any restrictions. I know you are a big Horton guy (I like him too) but you have also have suggested he does need to ease a bit into innings this year. (I also agree with that) How do they do it? 🤷
  19. I would think with days off and a manager like Counsell, who is creative, the cubs could send Brown and Horton down to AAA and then back up for their start. Then they can carry 8 pen arms at all times, line every other team.
  20. I agree that if they get a quality starting pitcher I wouldn’t worry about the pen, with the exception of a top closer. I wouldn’t pick up a journeyman middle relief pitcher. They are fine there. Just get the best starting pitcher they can get. As for a bench bat, I think once the AAA season ends they can bring up someone. I am not that worried about the bench bat.
  21. How about one stop shopping on Suarez and either Kelly or Gallen. All are FA at the end of the year.
  22. Well Imanaga replaces Rea. Another starting pitcher, preferably a TOR starter gets added. That makes Taillion, Imanaga, Boyd and the starter added, which would be 4 of a 5 man in the rotation. Brown and Horton can fill in on the 5th spot, which would limit their innings. They would be going every 10 games instead of 5. If they trade for one starting pitcher they can limit each of those guys. Plus Assad might be back. If they wanted to, they can spot start Rea once or twice. Maybe even some sort of 6 man rotation. By getting one starter and getting Imanaga back they can absolutely limit innings on guys. Yes, come actual playoff time a stud pen arm can be as valuable as a starting pitcher. But they have to get there. And I would like to do that with Brown and Horton still having some innings in their arms. I am not arguing against a pen arm. I am saying if they get one I want a 9th inning guy. I think they have plenty of middle relievers.
  23. Gilbert is still a very good pitcher and he will have one game pitched before facing the Cubs. They do seem to be running into some quality pitchers.
  24. Yep, they get Gilbert and Kirby. They also get Peralta and the top rookie prospect who no hit the Cardinals into the 6th. So 4 of the 6 games the rest of this homestand they face great pitching. But I think the wind will be blowing out.
