    Yesterday I was all over Counsel for his managing of that game. However, with hindsight I do see reasonings. First, letting Rea pitch the 6th. He was hoping he could milk 6 out of him with a depleted pen. So I get that. Next, not saving Maton for the 9th knowing he didn’t have Palencia. I believe the 8th inning was the better hitters coming up, so he used him for that inning. I guess I get that too. But I don’t like Martin for the 9th as his closer option. I also would have bunted with Nico when he came up with 1st and 2nd and no outs. Losing Shaw without even giving him a PA is also something I didn’t like. IMO, still not a great managed game, but I at least see his options and what he may have been thinking.

    Why would they trade for a pitcher like Brown/Assad/Rea when they have 3 of them already? If all they are going to do is get a guy like those guys why not wait it out a little and when Theilbar comes back they don’t have to add a rotation starter. They already have him with the combo of Brown/Rea/Assad. If Theilbar and/or Harvey is weeks away, maybe they do have to add someone now. But if either is closer to 8-10 days they can probably piece things together a little longer. If all they are going to get is a guy like the guys they have for that spot. I would rather wait if only 7-10 days.

    I get this. But the problem is rolling with Brown or Assad weakens an already weakened pen. This is good if/when Theilbar or Harvey comes back. Or maybe it is fine with Roberts brought up. As for Wicks, I have been a fan of his for a while now. But he just isn’t getting it done in Iowa. I have lost confidence in him. He would have been a great solution if he was pitching well.

    I agree with you. Get someone now. But, for me, it isn’t so much that they have to get someone now because of their current situation, it is more so because if someone else goes down they are really screwed. I mean, whoever they get now to eat innings probably won’t be any better than Assad. So he isn’t exactly taking stress off the pen. If/when Theilbar and maybe Harvey come back the pen will be fine. But can we count on health of Tailon, Imanaga and Cabrera to the ASB? I would say no. They re-signed Velesquez. He might be the bad arm they bring in. As for July, even if Imanaga, Steele, Cabrera and Boyd are all healthy (which would be a miracle), I still hope they add someone in that level. Even if it means, at that time, going to a 6 man rotation with Tailon also in the rotation, that is fine. Maybe it will keep all starters healthy and limit some innings.

    Yes. This was the worst managed game of the season by Counsell. He knew Palencia wasn’t available. You manage the game accoedingly.

    Another headscrating move by Counsell. If Palencia is t going to be used you have to use the pen differently to get to the 9th and have either Webb or Maton close it.

    Not Counsell best managing game, IMO. I thought Rea was done after 5. I also thought Hoerner should have bunted in the 7th with 1st and 2nd and no outs. And they now burned Shaw.

    I think it is a players option for next year. So I would guess he would elect to be a FA if he pitches well.

    Shaw? He would love it there. They don’t have a player on the 26 man roster not born in the USA. He would be perfect.

    Regardless of how bad they are right now, I don’t see a way the Mets dump now. Too much money invested. He isn’t going anywhere. And if the Mets are within 5 or 6 games of the WC at the TDL, I doubt they deal him.

    I guess you could look into a prospect hitter from the Cubs to a team with a prospect pitcher if that teams system is heavy on pitching and weak on hitting. The pitcher would have to be ready this year, now. I know Shaw has been doing well, but do they talk to the Red Sox about one of their ready pitching prospects for a Shaw? Bring up Ramirez and let him do the job Shaw is doing.🤷

    Less boring than Soroka😬 Wonder what it would cost now? A positive for SF is they lose more of his salary then they do if they keep him another 2 months. If they are being realistic they are not going anywhere. Why not deal him now if the Cubs give them what they want. Most likely Boston isn’t going anywhere either. If Gray looks good, is he an option? Again, earlier the better. I think there isn’t anyone really exciting they can get without a huge amount of assets leaving the team. And I don’t think they do that. I am looking for someone not as exciting as Peralta but more exciting than Soroka.

    I just hope, if they do need a starting pitcher at the deadline, they pull the trigger this year. It can be for a rental that may cost them less, or a controlled guy who might hurt the system a bit. But they will need a few starters next year anyway. I don’t want to see a “project guy” like Soroka, this year.

    I think Ray is just as good as any of the top 3 Cubs starters. He would be a nice addition because, IMO, he is better than Rea and Tailon. He would be used in the playoff rotation as well as get 8-10 starts in the last 2 months. Sure, I would like someone better. Would love to get Peralta. But I think they guy they get is not going to be a sure TOR starter. And, if Steele actually comes back healthy and effective, which is a huge IF, they don’t need to add a starter. I only chose Ray because I feel he is a decent #2/3 starter who might not cost crazy prospects because it is his last year. I don’t see them doing multiple higher end prospects for a pitcher this TDL.

    My “way too early” prediction on the Cubs biggest TDL pick up this deadline is Robby Ray. Giants will probably be out of it. This is Ray’s last year in his contract. Seems a perfect fit of not having to pay too much, since he is a rental, and he is still an effective pitcher. Obviously, things can change. Guys like Gray and Gallen are also in their last year, but neither is pitching well right now. I just don’t see the Cubs trading multiple higher end guys to get a guy they can have 2 or 3 years behind this season. So, to me, any rotation piece brought in will be a rental.

    I think a very easy reason to see trading Kevin at the trade deadline would be because they need another pitcher. If he can bring them someone who can give them quality innings at the end of they year and the playoffs, that is a very good reason to trade him at the TDL. Last TDL the Cubs didn’t part with Cassie to get Cabrera. Instead they waited until the off season. Sure would have been nice to have Cabrera for the playoffs. I don’t think they make the same mistake this year.
