  1. But when you sign a pitcher to 4 or more years aren’t you always taking a chance on being stuck with someone who doesn’t perform? Gallen has been better than all those pitchers, with the possible exception of Steele. If the Cubs believe whatever issues Gallen has last year they can fix, why wouldn’t they give him a 4 year deal? And, if they don’t want to deal with a one year opt out, that is what the have to do. Or make a trade.
  2. This is kind of what I am hoping for. Go a little over the LT, pay a small penalty and go under the next year. I prefer Cabrera because of an extra year. But this is what I would hope happens.
  3. I am willing to bet the same thing was said last year when the Cubs signed Boyd.
  4. If I had to guess I would put Gallen at about a 35% chance, a trade about 30%, Suarez 10%, lesser starter like Giolito around 10%, whiff altogether 10% and Valdez 5%.
  5. Not if he is paid as if last year was a fluke. If he is offered 4/$88M why does he need an opt out after 1 year.
  6. Actually you said 4/$64. His bonuses are strictly innings pitched. $1M for 80/90/100 innings. So if he pitched well he will make $21M next year, not $16M And he can opt out after the first year., which means he doesn’t have to take 3/$48 the next 3 years. I do not believe you said anything about that in your 4 year proposal. This is much better than what you suggested. If he is good he is in Houston 1 year. To me, that is huge for him and a deal breaker on any Cub offer.
  7. Why stop at Goldy? Why not Bregman? Might be why we hear a little about Bregman and nothing on Tucker. Cubs might prefer a right handed bat over Tucker.
  8. And that note, is average velocity of 93.5 below average? I wouldn’t see he throws hard, but I would think that’s average.🤷
  9. I can see a Shota type deal, but larger AAV. Maybe 2 for $40M then Cubs option the next 3 @ 66M total. If they say no he can take 3/$55M. This gives him a guarantee of 5/$95M. If neither works he is a FA. I doubt he is much lower than something like that.
  10. Fair enough. TBH, I am probably undervaluing Valdez because of that dickish move he pulled.
  11. He isn’t signing a 2/$41 deal. If the Cubs sign him because they want him, not because he fell to them in this ridiculous term you have deemed satisfactory, he will cost $20M+ and for 4 years. like Jason said, he isn’t my first choice either. I just don’t see him any different than Suarez, for sure, and very close to Valdez.
  12. I want the Cubs to get the guys they want, not the guys that they get because they accept the Cubs contract and they fall back to the Cubs. As a major market they should be able to do that. That said, I think you and most others are shorting Gallen here. His career stats line up nicely to Suarez and Valdez. if you don’t consider them just someone to take Rea out of the rotation and a small upgrade you shouldn’t have that opinion of Gallen either. He was off last year. But he did get better the second half. Guys here constantly write off guys after a bad stretch. And often they are wrong. If the Cubs see something that may have caused issues with Gallen last year and think they can fix it, or if Gallen did fix it late last year, he is just as much an upgrade to the rotation as is Valdez and Suarez. And small detail here, but I would rather have another right handed pitcher than a lefty. If the Cubs do get Gallen, I am not considering him a small move that doesn’t make much of a difference. Based on strictly what I read here, I want Imai. But if not him, I put Gallen, Suarez and Valdez all in the same level.
  13. Of course Dawson was a better player. But the Cubs signed him and then came in last place the next year. Based on Heyward being called the 4th best FA signing it only stands to reason the list was based on the impact the FA had on the team. So that is why I say Zobrist, though, not the better player over Dawson, was more impactful. I can probably name half a dozen or more FA the Cubs signed who are better as a Cub than Heyward. But in the opinion of the person who put the list together, better doesn’t mean best signing if you judge by impact on the team.
  14. I agree that no one involved in this really care if they work New Year’s Day. The bigger issue is he has to be signed by 4PM central on the 2nd. So after he decides there isn’t much time to get a contract reviewed and signed and a physical completed. I would think the decision would be made today so they can do he rest with a little more time.
  15. But if a team got wind of issues with his medicals why wouldn’t they move on to someone else? In the case of the Cubs why wouldn’t they cross him off and go into someone else. I think it is more likely Boras is playing his players against each other and he is causing the hold up. If one team find something on his medicals I am sure others would as well.!And if a team didn’t they would give him a contract and he would have signed it already. Buyer beware!
  16. If it got the Cubs Imai and Okamoto that would be awesome. But like you said, just a conspiracy theory. But I like it.
  17. Is Imai the 2nd or the 4th?
  18. Exactly. Well done.
  19. There are probably more people lining up to bitch about whatever the Cubs end up doing than there are Cub apologists.
  20. The thing with me is more about why they took Gallen over Imai, if that happens. If both sign a similar AAV deal, maybe Imai for 5 years an Gallen for 3 or 4, I wouldn’t be on the ledge. To me that says the Cubs think they can work with whatever issues Gallen had and actually like him more than Imai. However, if Imai does get a 7/$170 and then the Cubs sign Gallen I would be a little concerned that the Cubs got out of Imai strictly due to his contract demands and settled in Gallen. That is not something they should have to do, ALL THE TIME.
  21. Here is where I am on this. If Imai ends up getting 7/$175, and then the Cubs sign Gallen for something like 4/$88, I can’t help but think they did so because Gallen was cheaper. And that bugs me. As a major market team the Cubs should get who they want every once in a while, even if it take them out of their comfort zone. However, if Imai signs a 5 year contract, with an AAV of $22M and the Cubs, instead sign Gallen for 4/$88M I would think they must really like Gallen better, and trust the FO. Personally, based on comments from Jason and a few others, I would rather have Imai. But we really have no idea exactly how the Cubs view the remaining FA pitchers.
  22. They won a WS with Zobrist. What did they win with Dawson. And I am over 40. I get it, Dawson was a great signing. But Zobrist was more impactful. If I was going to have an issue with the list put out it would be with Heyward. Not Zobrist.
  23. But, again, if the Cubs sign Gallen to roughly the same deal they could have had Imai for, doesn’t that mean in their mind Gallen is the better pitcher? Sorry thawv, but I trust the Cubs FO evaluation much more than yours. Keep in mind, if Imai doesn’t up going to something like 7/$175 and then the Cubs sign Gallen instead, they do not deserve the benefit of the doubt as to why they went Gallen. That would be an example of them not signing the best FA, just the one who was willing to accept what they decided to spend.
  24. I agree, but that’s another discussion. For 2026 it makes more sense for the Cubs to carry one of Cassie or Mo, and then Alcantara as a a 4th outfielder. Once 2027 comes around maybe Cassie does take one of the outfield spots and they sign or trade for another outfielder.
  25. It isn’t so much they have to trade guys to get a starting pitcher. It is using the system to acquire major league talent. All teams trade prospects.
