How are you coming to that number? What is allocated to backup catcher? $7M? Pen arm? Starting pitcher? If it is $10M available with $35M TOTAL for pen arm, back up catcher and starting pitcher, I think signing one of the 3 mentioned would work. I don’t think Moncada, Rojas or Polanco should get to that amount. I just don’t see them spending big on the pen.

You mean if Shaw can’t handle 3rd? Canario, Kelly and either Cowles or the guy they got from Detroit. Not sure of the last guy. Depends on if they have any money to add someone. And if Shaw earns the job you have Polanco, Canario, Kelly and either Cowles or Detroit guy.

Hate to say it because I already forgot about him and people hate him here, but he also makes sense. But that said, what does any of Polanco/Moncada/Rojas cost? Would it really take them out of the market for a starting pitcher? I just don’t think they will spend big on a pen arm. I think they will get one more guy and it will be Hoby Milner. He can’t cost much. I feel there will still be a lot of money left for a staring pitcher. But if they do spend on a pen arm. Sure, why not bring Wisdom back!

Then he would be my first choice. I would also consider Moncada and Rojas. Then if your boy Shaw is all that you think he is, that player would be a good bench bat. None should cost too much to hurt them elsewhere. I doubt they spend bit on a pen arm. My guess is since the Brewers dfa Milner was Hoby would be here. I think he will be the pen arm. So add Kelly, Milner, one of those third baseman and you should still have a lot of money to add a staring pitcher.

Is Polanco a free agent? If so, he would be my preference as well. And if Shaw wins the job the Cubs have a nice lefty bat on the bench.

I don’t think it is given to him without a back up plan. Maybe he wins it. That would be awesome. But I would like to have a decent back up who, if Shaw wins the job, is bench strength.

So a little diffent topic but based on the Cubs getting Tucker and losing Paredes. Is Shaw the 3rd baseman? What is the status of guys like Moncada and Polanco? Are they both FA? Would one of them make sense on a short deal for not a lot of money as insurance with Shaw. Maybe they are just a bench bat if Shaw does well? Or do the Cubs shop for a 3rd baseman? Bohm has been mentioned as someone the Phillies are open to trading. Can Lowe or Diaz play 3rd? Tampa is always an option. They can also look at Torres to move to third. But he is probably too pricey. I just don’t see the Cubs handing the job to Shaw without a back up plan.

Yep, that small market Yankee team who took on Soto for one year should have known better. Not knowing if a guy will sign an extension when he is traded for, happens to all teams. I really don’t think Jed is going to do this deal unless he knows the Cubs will at least be willing to go all out for Tucker. And that is not $/$224 or something like that. He has to know it will be longer and probably higher annually and also know Tom will allow it.

Come on thawv. If the Cubs got Tucker and then got another starting pitcher you don’t see this as a 90 win team? Really? I do. And if you get into the playoffs with a solid team you can win. I mean do you just do nothing and sit in the corner because the Dodgers and Mets take all the good players? I mean what is the point then. Do you rally think these prospects will even be so good that they are better than the Dodgers or Mets on any given year? I also think you are being ridiculous with this idea at Jed knows he would sign Tucker after this year. They very well might not sign him, but I am sure he knows about what the cost will be and has the ok to go there with him. I am sure he isn’t just doing this knowing it is one year.

I don’t agree with this. With Bellinger, his contract is an issue. So the Cubs aren’t going to get fair value for him as a player. He would be the inky one I feel teams might feel they can lowball Hoyer in. But I doubt the Cubs get lowballed on any Hierner or Suzuki trade.

But if he is smart enough not to trade for him why even talk to the Astros? Why waste his time? Why not see about Lowe or Naylor? Someone other than Tucker. Why not see about trading for a pitcher. If he is smart, he isn’t acting like it, wasting time on something he knows he will never do.

You mean Paredes, Suzuki and Smith for Tucker? If so, I agree it won’t be that. But if it can be Paredes, either Alcantara or Smith and the someone in the Wesneski/Assad level, would you think that is possible?

So this is a show by Jed? He is wasting hours where he could be discussing other options, on talking about Tucker. And he has no intention of trading for him because he already knows they won’t sign him after next year? Seems like a giant waste of time for the Cubs FO.

I would go as far as Suzuki or Paredes plus Smith, Cassie or Alcantara, + Wesneski, Assad or Warren if the Cubs do trade Bellinger. Not 2 bats from the everyday line up for Tucker. It does come a point where they may be bidding against themselves. If he went somewhere else I would be very curious to see what they end up with. I would bet it wouldn’t be 2 solid line up pieces and a top prospect. I really wouldn’t want Suzuki to be the major leaguer they picked, and think they would pick Paredes anyway. But if backed against the wall I wouldn’t let Suzuki stop the deal as long as he was the only bat from the 24’ every day line up.

Doesn’t appear the Astros have asked for any of those guys anyway. (maybe Shaw, a little) seems it has been Paredes and Smith mostly. With one report of Suzuki too. That is too much.

Comes down to Suzuki is not someone I want to trade.

I get the match. But Tucker isn’t worth that haul. Plain and simple. And I don’t want to trade Suzuki. In my mind Suzuki is much better than Bellinger. Especially offensively, which is what they need. Him and Tucker in the middle of the line up is far superior to Tucker and Bellinger. I also don’t like the idea of trading Suzuki while trying to get Sasaki.!

I would guess the former as well. But maybe if the Astros like Warren the Cubs could pull back Cassie and Amith and make it definitely Alcantara. (If that is the Xubs preference. Regardless of which one of those guys it would be I would make the trade with one of them, Paredes and Warren. I wouldn’t also be fine with the Cubs eating $10M of Bellinger’s deal.

Regardless of what happens with Bellinger, Tucker isn’t worth Paredes, Smith and Suzuki. I would rather Jed walk away then let the Astros clearly win the trade. I also think trading Suzuki hurts the small chance they have at Sasaki. I wouldn’t do it.

The score radio in Chicago is framing it that way too. But assuming it is wrong than I am all for Getting Tucker and would do it even if Smith was in the deal. Paredes (better😬) and Smith with a smaller piece is as high as I would go.

To me Alonso is going to be this years Bellinger/Chapman of last off season.

And I hope he honors that comment. But if Suzuki is in the deal Valdez has to come too. Not saying Parades and Suzuki for Valdez and Tucker. Obviously the Cubs would have to add a combination of Smith/Assad/Wicks/Triantos/Alcantara/ Brown etc… Not all, but players within that group. But if they lost Suzuki they would probably keep Bellinger. Which means Suzuki has to bring pitcher back.

Smith is definitely getting some of that shiney new toy love here. I wouldn’t have a problem with him being the headliner at all. I would much rather trade a prospect than proven talent. I get Shaw, but I think if the Astros insisted(and I don’t think they would) I would trade him. My ideal trade to the Astros would be Smith/Alcantara/Assad. Keeps Parades at 3rd and when we trade Bellinger, Tucker replaces him. Bellinger gets traded for a staring pitcher. And if we have to add a prospect we do. Time to use the minor league system for what it is. A tool to bring in quality major league talent.
