  1. Sure is. Not any better than Wicks and Assad.
  2. It’s not a lot if he is the last pen arm, however. If they are going to sign Flaherty or trade for Lopez they may have decided to scrap the idea of Yates or Robertson and are spending most of the money they have on a rotation piece. Maybe they add Canhu and Moncada to the bench. They don’t spend on the pen but they get a quality starter and a decent bench. I just don’t know.🤷
  3. Maybe he is the answer to who the last pen arm will be. Maybe that is the angle. But even if it is. Assad still becomes more expendable.
  4. I just said this in the other link talking about this. Man,I hope WE are right.
  5. The only way Rea makes any sense is if Assad is traded along with others in a bigger deal for a starting pitcher. Rea takes Assad’s spot. If it is just Rea for the rotation this is horseshit.
  6. I don’t understand this signing, at all. What is the point of it?
  7. Also, wasn’t Imanaga here for weeks and no one knew it? Cubs are good about this stuff. That said, still a long shot.
  8. I assume Cease or King.
  9. Correct. I really doubt someone doesn’t take the job because they are burdened with Tucker’s contract moving forward.
  10. Is it really a tough decision if you think Tucker is talented enough to be on the team moving forward? If anything, isn’t Hoyer wanting Tucker here long term, even if he might not be here past this year, a greater compliment to Tucker’s ability? Isn’t it really a money decision only? Ownership has the money. I think everyone knows Tucker is extremely good. So does Rickets want to spend the money or not? I just don’t see what difference it makes who is running the team after this year.
  11. Right after I hit submit I thought the same thing.
  12. He was a long shot anyway. If he isn’t coming here they have no more excuses to wait to either trade for or sign a few quality players.
  13. I understand people’s fear of that. But a large market team just has to be able to sign a player whose contract might take him to close to 40 years old if,in doing so, they can get several great years out of him. Those who are against this sort of thing should never suggest the Cubs should spend big on anyone nor complain when they don’t spend. Top end star players are going to want money until their late 30’s and beyond. If the Cubs aren’t willing to do it for Tucker, than who?
  14. Yes, April will be a rough ride. Happy to come out of it .500. And people will be complaining if they start slow. I agree about that.
  15. You are probably right. But I don’t think Hoyer not having a contract for next year matters one way or the other. It is going to ownership that is paying the contract. If they want him long term they can easily give him the green light, whether he makes it beyond 25’ or not is irrelevant. And I also don’t think ownership has to know Hoyer will be around behind this year to allow him to get a deal done. Bottom line is they will have to approve it, whether Hoyer is on his last year or he signed for 3 more years.
  16. While I doubt the Cubs are working on an extension for Tucker, a lot of what they have been linked to this off season does point to it being possible. If they have $40M to spend with Tucker getting $16M they would only have around $20M if he signed a long term extension. Might explain cheap pick ups of Brujan, Morgan, Thielbar, and Festa. Might also explain the interest in Crochet and Luzardo. Get a cheaper pen and cheaper MOR-TOR starting pitcher and they can afford the extension. Probably not going to happen, but it would explain a lot.
  17. I am no longer so sure they add a bigger arm to the pen. It has been the FO MO to try fixing pen arms. I am not convinced that changes. Festa and Thielbar might be the lefty and righty they added. If it means they spend some of that money extending Tucker and adding a solid starting pitcher that may work. But I have my doubts they are going to do that.
  18. Back to non Tucker talk, is it possible the Cubs filled heir pen with signing Thielbar and trading for Morgan and Festa? Is it possible they are doing this again without bringing in a dependable”ish” arm for some decent dollars? And if that is the case, where is this money they saved with Bellinger going to be spent?
  19. Exactly. If a team is not willing to sign the mega deals that are the norm for the stars, they will never have stars. Even if they are home grown they will be gone as soon as they hit free agency agency. I understand (a little bit more)the POV of Stratos if the Cubs were not a major market, but they are. He is the perfect person to start acting like a major market for. And being $40M+under the LT they can afford to sign him now and take $37M as his LT salary instead of $17M, and still have $20M to spend on a pitcher. Honestly now is the time to act big market.
  20. If he signed a 10 year deal wouldn’t it start now? He is 27. So why would he be 29 when it starts? Let’s use $40M as a number for 9 years after this one and $16M this one. So 10 years for $376M. Does that seem about right? If he is worth it and even more for the first 4 years and then the next 4 only plays at the level he is being paid, is it so terrible for 2 years he is being paid a little too much than what he is worth? They are a major market. They should be able to carry an inflated contract and still be good. High budget teams do it all the time. If you want great players, and I do, sometimes you also have to pay them when they are not so great. And, tbh, $37.6M annual might not be that much of an k repay in 2032-2033. Bottom line is the Cubs can afford it.
  21. So much for a surprise Steele extension.
  22. You have more faith in the Ricketts than I do. I absolutely think they would parade Sosa in front of adoring Cubs fans as the big deal this off season. I hope they do more. But I wouldn’t put that past them. Add Tucker too. And it will keep the fans happy. At least those at that lovefest convention.
  23. An extension would be a happy surprise. But I don’t see that happening.
  24. Agreed. We are not talking about people who post here. Talking about the Cubs fan base, they love their players. There is a difference between not wanting someone on the team because he isn’t very good any longer and being a fan and supporting the player. I think most fans still love Javy, Bryant, & Rizzo. That doesn’t mean they want them back. Kyle received a great ovation when he finished his career. He will always be loved by the fan base. But that doesn’t mean the fan base wanted him out there pitching with his 5.00 era. The fan base absolutely did not turn their backs on the 16’ team after they won. I don’t even know how that can be suggested or what it even means.
