  1. This would be good use of Canario IF the Cubs then sign a decent right handed bat for the bench.
  2. What is considered value, though? If they got Thompson or Canario is that value? Each is a potential dfa from the Cubs.
  3. Looks like part one is being completed. Sure hope they listen to step 2 and 3.
  4. Agreed. Time for the Cubs to get into this sort of thing. I am not a huge fan of Flaherty, BUT if they signed him to a 3 year deal at $72M while deferring $55M of it and the contract only counted as $13M to $15M a year for payroll purposes, I would be all for him. This is just an example and I don’t know what the consequences to the team payroll would actually be. Same with Bregman. Cubs need to get creative. Also work on an extension with Tucker with huge deferrals. I don’t know how it shakes out for payroll purposes yearly, but, if you can’t beat them, join them.
  5. If the Cubs plan on getting close to the LT line(within $7M or so) I think they might end up with Pressley as the closer. He has a no trade clause but I saw he approved the Cubs as a team he would agree to be traded to. I think that trade would be strictly a salary dump by the Astros. He is making $14M. Maybe the Cubs trade them Canario. If the Cubs take it all on they would still have around $15M-$17M to use and still be well below the LT line. They can probably add guys like Grichek and Moncada to the bench, if they wanted. The problem is, I am just not convinced any longer that they plan on getting close to that line.
  6. I’m fine with Grichik. But what is his cost? And wouldn’t he rather be in a team he sees more starts? He would be a great bench bat.
  7. Well thought out. I don’t agree with all of it, but I appreciate you took the time to answer “why not Bader. “ And if he cost $12M and he wants and expects a full time job, I absolutely agree with you that he has no place on the Cubs. But, IMO if they believe Canario isn’t the answer as a back up they shouldn’t carry him just because he is out of options. If they believe he can hit and play the outfield and give PCA a day off I am fine with him being the back up. I just don’t want the Cubs to pass on a bench bat they feel is a better addition to the team than Canario just because Canario is out of options. Maybe Bader doesn’t work(probably doesn’t if he can get the money you suggest), but there is still Cahnu, Grichik and probably a few guys they can trade for. None would play center. But I think in that scenario they would move Tucker to center and probably play Suzuki and the bench guy they signed at DH and RF.
  8. I don’t mind the Berdi signing. I agree he is a good utility. I also like the price. It allows them to be more aggressive somewhere else. Whether it is a trade or signing of a pitcher or another bench bat, or both, having that extra money could help. My fear is, he is the bench bat. Or at the very best he is one of the bench bats and he is the salary they are working with. Same with the pen. They have not shown they will spend bigger on the pen or the bench yet. And look how inexpensive they went with the rotation. If this is a move before the bigger addition, great. But if this is a move similar to what they do the rest of the off season, not so great.
  9. I agree. And if the Cubs think Canario on the bench gives them a better chance at scoring more runs, I am good with him there. I am not fine with him there because if he isn’t there they either have to dfa him or trade him. If they like someone is better in the outfield then they do need to move him. I would rather in a trade, but if that can’t happen then dfa him will not bother me. I wish this wasn’t their options. I wish he had another year where he can stay in AAA. But he doesn’t. So tough decisions need to be made. I happen to think there are better options out there than Canario.
  10. What exactly has Canario done to be given a spot on the major league roster, other than run out of options? Isn’t the goal to be the best team they can be in ‘25? If they spend $3M to $8M on a bench bat that can play the outfield, with major league experience I would be fine letting Canario go. That said, I would rather use him as maybe a second or third piece in a trade then dfa him. But I don’t want him on the roster if they can get someone better as a FA. Maybe him and Assad to SD for Suarez? Sign Bader, Joe, Grichik or Cahnu for the bench.
  11. Sadly I doubt they add 2 more bats. Maybe one more. Also one more pen arm. They are going to come in well below that LT line this year and it sucks that this is what they are doing. I honestly expect another guy at around $3M then a pen arm at about $8M and that is it. Well below what we hoped and very disappointing.
  12. I would say he isn’t the answer for the bench. I would hope they did better than Canario. Yes, he would be dfa or used as a piece in a trade.
  13. I think the Cubs lost him as soon as the Dodgers wanted him. I fully believe had the cubs upped their offer to match the Dodgers, the Dodgers would have just added more. Cubs were not going to win that battle.
  14. I agree he is doing exactly what Tom wants him to do. But I think Tom will throw him under the bus if they don’t win. He will blame someone. Then sign another guy who will agree to be the same kind of president of baseball ops Jed has been. An owner yes man.
  15. Thats an interesting and unexpected take by you. I think if they don’t win he is gone. That said, his replacement will be a similar type guy who will be a Ricketts yes man.
  16. Yep, if he is there I see Dallas taking him. Wonder if the Bears can leverage that belief into getting maybe an extra 3rd round pick from Dallas. Didn’t they get a 4th for dropping one spot, from the Eagles. Of course if Dallas believes the Bears will take the RB at 10 they might want to move ahead of them. Which wouldn’t suck either. Gives the Bears a better chance at the top OL prospect or top DL prospect. One less team picking one of them. I think, whether the Bears want the RB or not they should make It appear they do.
  17. I am sure you just misspoke, but there is not one WC game.
  18. I feel they have enough middle relief options. I agree they don’t need to add another AND get a back end guy. Just get the back end guy. If they want to sign Raley and stash him until July as injured, that is fine. But I see no need for another middle relief pitcher at the start of the year.
  19. Can’t wait to see this site when the Cubs start off 9-14. It is going to be so much fun😥
  20. Yep. Signing Rea instead of going after a guy to slot ahead of Tailon suggest either they do feel good about a few of the guys you mentioned or they are just hoping to hang in contention until the deadline and get a starting pitcher at 1/3 the cost. Sure hope it is the former. But very well can be strictly a money saving move.
  21. I agree with this, provided they do sign or trade for a back end pen arm and at one or two solid bench bats. They have t done that yet. Other than that yiu said basically my thoughts. If they do that, my only criticism would be I would have rather spend a little more and gotten a better starter than Rea. But maybe the Cubs expect Brown or Horton to give them 100 quality innings and didn’t feel they needed more than Rea at this time.🤷
  22. I agree with all of this, and will add one more thing. Maybe they really believe Brown or Horton can be big contributors to the rotation the last half of the year. That said, since they didn’t get the big time closer I wish they did invest more on the rotation.
  23. Yep, if the Dodgers want him next year he is gone.
