  1. After listening to Hoyer on the score, it doesn’t appear they are going to do much, if anything. I think they are going into the season with $25M to spend at the TDL. Which sucks! That means they traded Bellinger to line Tim’s pockets, not spend it elsewhere. And again, that sucks on top of them sucking because they use the LT as a salary cap. Very disappointed if this is the end result.
  2. Why? Cardinals don’t want him. They actually haven’t treated him so great. He took a team friendly contract to save them money. And now they want to trade him. What better place to come to if you want to stick it to them.
  3. Colorado is on some of that money. I think he has 3 years left at $52M. I don’t think he hurts them too much regarding the LT line. They can afford him and then wait until the TDL to add another pitcher. I like Shaw, but if they can get a proven major leaguer and have the best IF defense in baseball I might be interested. Even a down year from Arenado is probably a good season for Shaw, as a rookie.
  4. Ok, we can all make points on if the Cubs should have gone further and got Bregman or if we are glad they didn’t. Fact is, that is over. So now what? I agree with Bertz on the most probable conclusion, if they do add. But what about trading for Arenado? What does he cost? I know Colorado is taking some of his contract. I also know he was very average last year. But he is 33, not 40. It could have just been a bad year. Those happen. Doesn’t mean he is washed up. Didn’t Goldy have an MVP best year of his career after 33 years old. Would they still have enough money to add Robertson if they added Arenado? I don’t think he would take a top end prospect to get.
  5. To me, this is ok. It is a minimum of what they should do, assuming Peller stays high on his ask. Robertson and Turner or Canha would be ok. Add Cease to that and it even a better result than had they signed Bregman(assuming they would have then had to trade Nico) In fact if someone like Dejong ended up the bench bat instead of JT or Canha, because he is cheaper, I would be ok with that if it allowed the Cubs enough budget to get Cease and Roberson or Saurez.
  6. I have no issue passing on Bregman at $40M annual. But now what? And who did we miss while we chased Bregman? My fear is they add a guy like JT to the bench and that is it. Shop closed. And I certainly hope that’s not the case. Maybe Turner or Canha cost $5M to $6M. That leaves them about $25M short of their imaginary budget line. So setting aside money for the deadline, roughly $18M they can spend. They need a rotation piece to slot ahead of Taillon. To me the fallback, if they didn’t get a rotation piece would probably be Robertson. And if they did get him they would still have money to spend. Just no one to spend it on. Cubs had a chance to have a great off season. I think in the end it will be a good off season with misses. Maybe for Tom it will be a great off season. They got better AND he saved $25M……It is a shame our big market owners act so small.
  7. If taking Suarez lowers the cost of Cease I am fine with him. But if he cost more, let’s just get Cease.
  8. Cease and Turner would be a good ending to the off season. If not Turner, Canha.
  9. If that is true, they can have him. And why didn’t take him that long to sign that. That is crazy money. No idea why the Cubs would have stuck around at that level.
  10. Who? King? I thought he counted for $7.5 against the cap. Are we sure he is only at $4M?
  11. I don’t think the Cubs are too worried about the draft picks and I am pretty certain he isn’t getting a straight 4 year deal from the Cubs. I haven’t seen anything that would suggest the Cubs are offering anything like that. Seems most reports have them offering creative ideas where Bregman can opt out after year one.
  12. How much do they save trying any of the guys you mentioned, especially at the TDL? And if those guys are playing well how do they trade them if you are contending. And if they are playing poorly who will want them. Look, I am all for signing Bregman and keeping Nico. Act like a major market. Maybe even add a pitcher now or at the deadline. This imaginary cap the FO uses as their budget is just ridiculous. But they do use it. It would be very difficult to stay under with both Bregman and Nico.
  13. But it is not just signing Bregman. If they were actually a big market acting team, of course, Bregman would be the best option. But is he the best option if they then have to trade Nico? You leave out that part. You also suggest people are saying just sign JT and don’t worry about Bregman. That isn’t what most people are saying. They are saying use that money on a pitcher they trade for THEN sign JT as a bench bat. And it doesn’t have to be JT. Could be Canha or someone else. If they did that they might even have enough for another pen arm. If all they did was sign Bregman, sure, they add a 4 win player. But if you lose a 4 win player to do so have you gotten better? Why not add a 3.5WAR pitcher to replace a 1.5WAR pitcher and then add to the bench and maybe even another pen arm. That is the true discussion. Not if Bregman is better than JT. For the record I agree with you that the Cubs should act big market. They should sign Bregman, keep Nico and trade for King or Cease and be comfortably between the 1st and 2nd tier of the LT. They would be a clear favorite in the division and a 90+ win team. There is no reason a major market team cannot operate at that level, except ownership won’t allow it.
  14. If we keep JT in the proper perspective I think most can at least agree the Cubs should spend some money on a decent bench bat. Doesn’t have to be JT. Could be Canha. I am sure there are a few others. But the pool is dwindling. We also have understand this is based on NOT getting Bregman. It is also not the most important thing they do with they money if they don’t get Bregman. I solid pitcher would be more important, IMO. But a bat would be second. If they go to the trade deadline $10M under their max they will be fine. They do not need to be $30M below.
  15. Here is where I am with Turner. If they get Bregman all conversation about Turner is out. If they don’t get Bregman the best use of money and far and away more important than a bench bat should be for a starting pitcher in a trade. After that I would put a solid bench bat. I do believe a right handed hitting guy who could play first wouldn’t about 250 AB with the Cubs. Besides filling in for injuries he can DH when any outfielder is given a day off. Plus inevitably someone will get hurt during the year. At $7M to $8M they would still have enough money to go after King or Cease or even a Seattle pitcher if they want to give up prospects. I would put Turner, or even Canha, ahead of another pen arm. I would much rather spend on a bench bat than dumpster dive for another staring pitcher in the Quintana, Lynn, Corbin, etc section of free agents. Quality arm first, someone to slot ahead of Taillon, bench bat next.
  16. I agree. Cubs will most likely want him signed soon. With a start of the season in 6 weeks I can’t imagine they want him behind. Plus the early schedule is brutal. You don’t win a division in April, but you certainly can lose one with a terrible start.
  17. Cool. Honestly i am not sure how I feel about Bregman for $30M. Lose a 2nd and 5th rd pick and most likely have to trade Nico. And then we actually hope he is here for only 1 year. I still think they can make the team better in ‘25 by adding a solid starting pitcher and a bench bat or two, instead of the Bregman signing.
  18. This is entirely possible. As my post said “if all are equal”. The scenerio you suggest is not all equal. I agree with you that if the Cubs have a better deal he will come here. I also agree that the Red Sox make some sense for Arenado.
  19. I think if it comes down to Boston and the Cubs and all things are equal he will choose Boston. He just has a better chance of putting up bigger numbers in Boston than he does at Wrigley. If he is signing a short term deal I would think he wants to go into next year with good numbers. Cubs can offer him playing with Pressley and Tucker, so that is an advantage for them. But IMO if he wants a bigger contract after this one, he will go to the Red Sox.
  20. They have talked all spring about getting Devers off of 3rd. Even if they traded for Arenado they would put Devers at 1st. They have also tried getting rid of Yoshida. It is no more random than the Cubs going after Bregman to then have to most likely move Nico.
  21. I have to think both Bregman and Boras know the Cubs aren’t going to budge on years. So if he really wants the Cubs he may need to make it official soon. I think if he hasn’t committed it is because he does want another team to come up in years.
  22. I have to think something happens by the end of this weekend. Teams are all reporting. Time to make a decision.
  23. Count me in on this way of thinking. Turner can still hit. I don’t care if he is 40. He posted OPS+ of 114 last year. I would take that on the bench. Canha would be fine as well. We are talking one year. Give me a guy who can hit with a little pop and better than league average. I also realize a bench isn’t needed that much with the Cubs basically having a set line up. But if they don’t get Bregman, after hopefully getting a pitcher for the rotation, a good bench bat is the next most important thing.
  24. Ok, I actually agree. 👍 I think that is why Turner talk is coming out. I think all teams mentioned by Olney for Bregman are also in on Turner. I think the Turner talk is being mentioned to perhaps spur a decision by Bregman. If the Cubs could swing a trade for a pitcher who slots ahead of Taillon and sign Turner, IMO, that is a better team than one that signs Bregman and then trades Nico for a prospect.
  25. Isn’t this a thread about Turner? Shouldn’t the Bregman comments be in that threat? Let’s try to keep this straight. Seemed you were going there when you discussed backup first baseman, but yiu veered back to Bregman. Turner is obviously an option only if Bregman is not signed. He would be a solid back up 1st baseman plan. Maybe even a DH when the Cubs give an outfielder a day off and Suzuki moves to the outfield. Maybe even 10-12 games at 3rd. The biggest issue with Turner is the Cubs have to show him he will get playing time.
