1 Cubs fall short of an opportunity to be clear favorites in division by not doing enough in the off season. 2. I read the tweet. Cubs aren’t getting Bregman. And I am fine with that anyway. What I wish they did was already have better talent in the team then what they have. Instead of low salary dumpster dive, back end guys like Morgan, Thielbar, Rea, Brasier, Berti, Lopez, any number of pen arms they signed hoping to catch lightening in a bottle, trade for or sign some better players. 3. yes, there is time left. And if he does do more I will acknowledge my overreaction. But what I see is maybe a bat added for the bench and we go to spring training after a good offseason that could have taken a bigger step and been a great off season. But, hey, at least Ricketts saved $25M. NOTE: my post was more out of frustration that guys are signing and we aren’t getting them. I honestly don’t think we are getting Bregman. So I want a better starting pitcher and a good bench. The issue with a staring pitcher is most likely it has to come via trade. And you need another team for that. I am not sure I see that happening.

I don’t care that they don’t end up with Bregman. What I do care about is all the penny pinching because they fell for Bregman using them to try to get a better off elsewhere. They should have just gotten a better pitcher than Rea, maybe signed Robinson and probably should have signed Grichik and Moncada. They wouldn’t have enough for all of those moves, but at least a few. Now guys are signed and they have money and nothing to spend it on. And even that would be ok if they used it to extend Tucker. But I have no faith they will do that either. They had a chance to be a clear favorite for this division. They may still win it, but they did waste an opportunity to be even better.

I’ve seen this play out too often. Cubs are going to come away with MAYBE Canha and that will be it. Ricketts will pocket $25M of money he didn’t spend and then the off season will be complete. And they won’t use it to extend Tucker and probably won’t used it if they add at the trade deadline. Another off season tease.

So if I am reading this right you are suggesting if Schmidt did throw 160 innings his value might be close to Nico. Is this correct?

No, you did well explaining. As did 1908. I don’t see the point of signing Bregman if they have to trade Nico to make it happen. It gets even worse for me if they only get prospects for the enviable decline trade later in the year. For me, that is too many moving parts. Tarnish IF HE HAS TO BE TRADED, I want a guy useful now. Maybe Schmidt want the guy to target. All good.

Fair. Honestly I don’t want to trade Nico anyway. And, TBH, if signing Bregman only happens if they trade Nico I would rather they not sign Bregman. And I really hate the idea of Nico for prospects.

Yep, that is the problem. If the Cubs got Schmidt I would expect a MOR starter with 150+ innings. So taking him out of the equation I guess I should say the Cubs shouldn’t expect more than a MOR starter with maybe a little more control time left and at a cheaper salary, for Nico. I put Schmidt in that criteria. But not if he is only a guy who can be counted on for 100 innings.

Ok, thanks. Seriously I am not arguing with either of you. I am trying to learn about this. So, as I suggested with Schmidt, if another pitcher that scenerio would that be something rhenXhns should consider? Lower cost, a little more control and a decent MOR starter. Is that about what would be expected for Nico. Maybe Schmidt doesn’t fit that criteria. I like him, but I am not married to him.

So, if I am understanding this correctly, if Schmidt provided fWAR of 7.5 over the next 3 years that would amount to $67.5M. Minus his salary of $15.6M would put his SV around $51.9. Is this correct? What is the typical fWAR of a solid MOR starter? Is 2.5 a reach? Or is that decent? I am only asking because I am wondering if my difference of opinion is because I value Schmidt higher than what’s realistic.

It is where I got it. That said, I think you are a little low on Schmidt and high on Nico. I think they are closer than you suggest. I also don’t think the Cubs get much more than a MOR starter. Maybe I am higher in Schmidt than I should be. I think he is going to be better than Tailon the from here on out. So, basically a #3. When you factor in his salary is only $3.6M this year and has 2 more years of control after this one. I don’t think they can expect more. Circling back, however, I would rather they not trade anyone. But if they had to move Nico and were to get a pitcher back while saving money, who is someone who falls within a few million in surplus value to Nico? Just looking for someone who would fit “value wise” so I can understand what should be expected for Nico. Doesn’t have to actually fit as a trade partner. This is just for my knowledge moving forward. Does Sanchez of the Phillies match? I am pretty sure Kirby and Gilbert don’t.

Just looked up both guys in surplus value. Clarke comes in at just over $20M and Nico about $23M. I think Nico is being overvalued by the Cub base. Again, I would rather just keep him. But you aren’t getting much better than Schmidt for him, if the goal is also saving money.

Really? You are the second person to think Nico for Clarke Schmidt is a hard no from the Cubs. What am I missing? I feel Cuzi loved Schmidt. Haven’t heard from him. Just curious, what does surplus value show these guys at? I am not saying you are wrong, I might be. I just thought Schmidt was more valuable. Keep in mind, if the Cubs got Bregman, I would rather no trade is made. I am only saying if one HAD to be made I thought this was fair.

I think the pen is done. Just bench help, unless they can trade for a starting pitcher. If this is all they do they missed a chance at passing a MOR starter better than Rea. Decent off season, but could have been better. If they extend Tucker by adding to this years salary in the extension that would be good use of the money. But sadly I think the money not spend is going to end up in Ricketts pocket.

I agree with you on the offensive side of the ball. The game doesn’t change in the playoffs. It does change from the pitching side, however. Which may be why more slug is needed in the playoffs. I don’t know that to be true. But if it is true that might be why. I do know pens are used earlier and more often k the playoffs. You can’t do it all season.

They haven’t signed Bregman yet. I would jump to conclusions about their opinion of Shaw. Maybe Nico will be out all of April. Maybe they like the idea of Shaw at multiple positions getting a few games a week. I think they are very high in Shaw. Maybe if they do get Bregman they will trade Nico. 🤷 I am with everyone else here in the best case scenario if they got Bregman. That would be they would keep everyone. But, TBH, I would rather they spent the money elsewhere, and passed on Bregman.

Honestly, I don’t want anyone traded if they get Bregman. That would be my first choice. And aside from that,mgettinf Bregman was my 3rd option on how I would be ok with finishing the off season. So you aren’t going to get too much push back from me on having to move anyone for him. I am just saying if they did have to trade Suzuki it isn’t as simple as Suzuki is better than Bregman so don’t trade him. The return matters. Again, I am not in favor of any trade. If they sign Bregman I hope they don’t have to move anyone. To me, I would rather look into improving the starting rotation and adding a solid bench bat, then signing Bregman.

Agreed. I don’t see how trading Taillon makes any sense. They need to add an pitcher, most likely, not trade one. -
I like him too. That would be hard to do. But it isn’t just Suzuki versus Bregman. It is Suzuki and Rea versus Bregman and whoever they get in a trade for Suzuki, and maybe some additional money they can use at the deadline. Still a very hard decision.

I get this too. And if they did sign Bregman my preference would to go to camp as is. Don’t trade anyone. The issue is they would be so close to the LT number they would have very little to add anyone at the deadline. And I think they will need to add a pitcher. Of course, if they trust the young guys close to the majors, maybe that is when they come in. Or at that time they trade someone like Suzuki or Hoerner for the pitcher they need. Trades like that have happened before. It is just a tight rope they are walking in if they did that.

Agreed. That is the problem the Cubs will run into. They want a starting pitcher if they sign Bregman. They also want to lower the team salary. There are teams that would take Nico or Suzuki in a trade but they want to dump salary as well. Mariners could use either. That won’t work. As you said, SD is dumping salary. That won’t work. Maybe the Yankees or Phillies can work something out. I still like Schmidt. Cheap and could be a very good #3. Yankees also have 6 starters. I also like Sanchez of the Phillies. I would love a Mariners started (not Castillo), but don’t see that working.

I was thinking Suzuki as well. Which opens up the Phillies as a possibility. Also allows the Cubs to take on a higher contract back. I would be shocked if Taillon is used in a trade. Gives them even less pitching and makes no sense. But is the offense better with Bregman for Suzuki? No! So they better improve the staff.
