  1. This offseason! It’s so boring we’re debating nothing!
  2. I don’t disagree with this. And again, I’m not saying Ohtani is being irrational either. It’s a huge decision. But we have guys that are posted with limited windows to sign. We have guys like Hoskins that are generally assumed to get a certain amount. None of which we can move in on right now because we either have 50 mil tied into one player…or we don’t. It’s a big difference and it leaves me extremely nervous that there’s such a huge variance in our spending.
  3. There’s no point to have missed. This isn’t really an inflation argument. It’s common sense that teams have budgets. Ohtani is going to be heavily impacting that budget based on his yearly contract. So a team has to alter where the rest of those resources are allocated based on his contract. The wild part is I’ve never stated he’s being unreasonable. But he’s handcuffing whichever team he chooses the longer he waits
  4. This might be a 600 million dollar contract. If you’re comparing that to the highest contracts of last offseason I don’t know what else I could possibly say here. The highest contract the cubs have given is 184 million. This is easily over 500 and trending upwards. Signing Ohtani will -without question - alter what a team spends after that. I’m really not even sure why it’s a debate. Signing Ohtani might be the difference in trading for Glasnow vs targeting Yamamoto. That’s a pretty big difference, no?
  5. Yeah, you’re underestimating this contract. Not only that, you’re underestimating its impact on team payroll. This is 50 mil of your off season spending right off the bat. Teams need to know if that contract is going to be on their books before they can spend accordingly around it. Also, I was not remotely calling him “indecisive” or “weird”. You might be referring to others with that statement, but to clarify I fully understand he can take his time here. It’s his decision. But if he’s truly prioritizing winning above all else it would behoove him to figure this out soon so the winning team can fill other holes.
  6. The issue is this IS the first time anyone is going to sign a contract of this nature. And while he’s fully within his rights to take as long as he wants to decide, he is also making it harder for his chosen team to add around his enormous contract.
  7. Damn. This might make the winter meetings one of the least exciting of all-time. What’s going to really suck is if it was the dodgers all along and we wasted all this time on a guy who was never really interested in us when we could have been shopping for our other needs. Still hoping this gets done today or tomorrow so we can handle the rest of our offseason
  8. This is going to be a very tough offseason for us if we whiff on Ohtani and Soto goes elsewhere.
  9. That guy isn’t really to be taken seriously though, right? How would he have all this info that none of the national guys have.
  10. Nice! Thank you.
  11. Are we doing a winter meetings thread where we can put rumors for the cubs and all other teams in one place? Feels like it’s going to be a busy one. Especially if Ohtani signs before.
  12. Yeah, I can’t stop refreshing here and twitter. I was trying to nap and nope!
  13. Let’s hope. The last two days have left me genuinely pessimistic about the direction of this offseason.
  14. So his slight pessimism on Ohtani should be taken seriously, right? I mean, he’d be the one to know.
  15. Interesting. I was curious because I know with Suzuki the weather was of importance to him. That’s one thing that’s a bit tough for us, April in Chicago is more winter than spring lately.
  16. Does Ohtani live in LA in the offseason?
  17. Man, I can’t believe we have to deal with this for at least a few more days.🤣 I was hoping it’d be done by now so we could get into winter meetings mode knowing what we need.
  18. Assuming that’s what happened, there’s a way to get Soto without dealing Horton or PCA, and I think Jed needs to find it if we miss Ohtani. The padres are going to ask for the moon to start, of course. They’d be poorly run if they didn’t. That’s what negotiations are.
  19. I want this. I want this bad. And frankly it’s starting to drive me crazy. This is just such a weird offseason where after the top free agents there’s such a drop off that I don’t know how you put together a notably better team without signing a Ohtani/Yamamoto or trading for a Soto. The idea of settling for Matt Chapman sickens me. I loved Belli this year, but I have some concerns with him on a mega deal. It’s just…Ohtani would be a coup.
  20. My only thing is it seems like several reporters get the same “vibe” from somewhere. Whether they’re just stealing from each other or not is the question. But last week we seemed to be the hot pick and now it seems to be the jays. That said, I do think Rogers is being genuine here. I’m sure little rumblings are leaking and as of now we’re not the “favorite”. Frankly, now that the bidding seems to be nearing the 600mil mark I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing.
  21. Swap out Bellinger with Soto and Glasnow with Cease while adding Hoskins and Imanaga and im interested 🤣
  22. Where did you see this? And yeah, the chatter has been rather pessimistic the last day or so. Bummer.
