  1. Burnitz no longer hits well enough to be a starting corner OF but I suppose some team might want him in a caretaker role if they have a minor league LF/RF who's almost ready for the bigs. There are also small market teams that can't afford anybody better.
  2. I honestly see him as a Cardinal next year. I think Jocketty has accepted the benefits of statistical analysis in a way that we could only dream of as Cubs fans. I think Hendry will just look at Giles' BA and HR and conclude that Giles is overpriced. He will remain oblivious to Giles' 119 walks.
  3. Nomar is a failed experiment and I don't see him as an everday SS anymore. He needs to move to 3B permanently, and if he lands on a team with a lefty 1B he could make himself more useful by learning 1B too.
  4. I live in Chicago and I'm quite happy the Sox won.
  5. It can easily get much worse if Hendry is dumb enough to get a veteran LH-batting OF for the bench and Murton slumps early.
  6. This just means Hendry was sane enough to decline Burnitz' $7M option. He could still come back as a free agent.
  7. Judging from some of what I've read on this message board lately I guess we'll soon see "sour grapes" added to the list of stereotypes attached to Cubs fansl
  8. The Sox have won 15 of their last 16 games. Have they been lucky the entire time?
  9. That simply isn't true. Konerko followed the bad Dye HBP call in game 2 with a grand slam, and the disputed AJ Pierz. call in the ALCS would not have resulted in a run without a subsequent Sox SB and double. Those were NOT free runs, unlike what happened in this game, when the Astros got a gift solo HR, which resulted in an instant score for the Astros without any further effort on their part. Now THAT is a free run.
  10. Too bad Bill Gates is a nerd. If I had his money I would certainly buy an MLB team and give the GM a fat payroll every year.
  11. I wish Steinbrenner would throw a tantrum and put Matsui and Sheffield on the market.
  12. Has anybody called him "Blobby" yet?
  13. I went to a party tonight to watch game2 and it was a blast. I hung on every pitch and we all cheered like mad dogs whenever the game went the Sox' way. Am I a jerk to have enjoyed the game? Ever since I moved to Chicago my social circle has been very North/South Side integrated and none of us are hateful people who would wish failure on our friends' team. If the Cubs were in the World Series I'm sure I'd see the same crowd of friends partying and cheering.
  14. I'm cheering for the Sox. I live in Chicago but didn't grow up there and don't relate to this Cub/Sox hatred. I also have friends who grew up on the South Side and have been loyal Sox fans since childhood and I'd feel like a mean-spirited turd rooting against their team purely out of spite.
  15. I still don't know why Mexico can't have a team. Would the Devil Rays really be worse off in Mexico City than Tampa?
  16. Yeah, I hate that the organization puts itself in a state of ignorance for no good reason. Besides Hill, we still don't know what Cedeno can do in everyday duty because Neifi had supposedly earned the right to start 5 times a week even after playoff hopes were gone. Now Hendry will throw big $$ at Furcal out of ignorance of Cedeno's ability level. Ignorance is expensive.
  17. Are you sure you want a lefty-swinging veteran corner OF on the bench? He would certainly take a significant # of starts from Murton, and guess what would happen when Murton experiences his first slump. If we get a veteran backup OF I don't want him to be able to swing a bat any way but right-handed.
  18. I don't understand some of the posts here. Why should someone go to a World Series game just to act like a cynical hateful smartass? If you hate these teams so much sell the ticket to someone who will actually get some joy from seeing the game.
  19. Burnitz a good acquistion? I don't think you'll find too many here who agree with that. If we could have gotten him for $1M he might have been acceptable.
  20. I have to believe this about Manny wanting to play for a winning team. After all, what does the city of Cleveland have that Chicago doesn't? Too bad the Cubs sucked this year.
  21. If we know anything about Hendry it's that he overvalues versatility and LH pitching, so none of us should be surprised he wants Rusch back. I wouldn't be surprised if he outbids himself too, as he did with Alfonseca at $4M
  22. I remember Jim was awful quick on the phone last year when Neifi became available.
  23. I was being sarcastic. REALLY sarcastic. I wish he would decline Burnitz 10 minutes ago.
  24. But, he is sitting back quietly with his cards close to his vest as the world slips right on by......... Actually, in this case he should be criticized for moving too fast, right? Didn't he re-sign Rothschild before it came out that Mazzone was available? If he had held his cards tight, he would have been more able to jump on this. But because he did what everyone is clamoring for -- moving fast -- he missed this opportunity. Be careful what you ask for. Don't criticize Jim's haste. He is moving slowly on declining Burnitz's option, so everything evens out.
  25. Is it customary to wait this long to decline an option? If the Cubs were going to decline Burntiz you'd think they would have already done it so he could start looking for a new gig. He's kinda stuck in limbo right now.
