  1. The White Sox went 47-34 at home, so Dusty's excuses about how hard it is to play in Chicago don't hold water.
  2. Amen. Yeah, good point. I'd love 180 Ks and a .320 OBP out of the leadoff spot. With about 25 solo HRs. I don't want Wilson at all, and certainly not at leadoff, but I bet Dusty would use him there. I was just pointing out some other players who have been misused at 1-2 in the order.
  3. Wilson never has and never will be a leadoff hitter. I wouldn't go that far. And I am holding out hope that Hendry won't go after Wilson because of Felix Pie likely being able to take over CF in 2007 at the latest. Wilson won't take a 1-year deal. I didn't know Wilson wouldn't take a 1 year deal. That is very very good news. And yes, I know Wilson is not a leadoff hitter, but neither is Corey Patterson, Neifi Perez, or Jose Macias.
  4. I suspect Hendry values Preston Wilson far more highly than this message board and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he becomes a Cub and bats leadoff.
  5. SOX. I have friends who grew up on the south side and are hardcore Sox fans and I have no problem joining them for a while. I didn't grow up in Chicago so the Cubs/Sox hatred isn't in my blood. Sure there are some annoying Sox fans, but there are plenty of annoying Cubs fans too. It's not like I love the loudmouthed drunk frat boys in Wrigleyville.
  6. It doesn't scare you just a little bit that they trotted Corey Patterson, Neifi Perez and Jose Macias out there at the top of the order all year long when better options were available? It sure scares me that this team doesn't seem to think there is a serious problem with the offense (lack of OBP). To hear the press leaks for Preston Wilson and other leaks about not retaining Nomar or Walker leads me to believe that they don't think there is a problem. They seem to be all too interested in Furcal. But, I'll bet they are interested in Furcal because of his speed. Baker has been quoted as saying you need a speed guy at the top of the order. I wonder if they even know what Furcal's OBP was this past year. That's what is scary. I agree that Hendry will almost certainly go after Furcal. I'd rather the Cubs just hand the starting SS job to Cedeno but that is probably a pipe dream, and I doubt it would work out for the best anyway. There would have to be a veteran backup SS on the roster, and the veteran would inevitably end up the starter unless Cedeno could avoid even the most minor of slumps.
  7. The Cubs can afford all that? How much payroll is free for 2006?
  8. So you want: Nomar Cedeno Perez For short then? Go with Cedeno. Spend the extra money for Giles and bullpen. Yeah. I'm for letting Nomar walk. We have to be prepared for the possibility of having to overpay for a RF. I'd rather have Cedeno's defense, low salary, and future upside if we can get Bradley, Castillo, and Giles. I think a lineup of Castillo, Bradley, Lee, Giles, Ramirez, Murton, Barrett, Cedeno is about as much as we could hope for. Definitely Cedeno. I think a lot of people are counting on getting Nomar too cheaply. If you give Nomar an incentive-laden contract that starts at 2M and tops out at 8M the beancounters still have to allocate 8M in the budget for him. That's easily enough to make the difference between getting Giles or being stuck with some crummy Burnitz type. This team can afford Nomar and Giles, even if Nomar reaches all of his incentives. If Nomar reaches all of his incentives, what would you suppose that would mean for the Cubs? Excellent offense from SS, poor defense, and no shot at Millwood or Burnett. I really want to make a run at a premier SP because I don't have any faith that Kerry will finish 2006 in the rotation.
  9. Shawn Estes was 15-8 last year. How did we ever let him get away?

  12. I agree with whoever said we wouldn't need Furcal if we had Bradley and Castillo batting 1 and 2. I hope Hendry can make the deal, but it sounds too good to be true.
  13. Every time I talk about pitchers' W-L I feel slightly embarrassed just for having the discussion. It is such a painfully STUPID subject.
  14. http://photos1.blogger.com/img/203/2268/320/sour%20grapes%20by%20sally%20minker.jpg
  15. Williams only had a $75M payroll this year. Compare that to the Yankees, Red Sox, or Cubs. Let's give the man some credit.
  16. I read a story about a college game with a situation like you describe. Rain was imminent, the game was not yet official, and the fielding team was way behind. The coach ordered his pitcher to intentionally walk everybody so as to prevent the game from reaching the official 5 innings before the rain came. The batting team became frustrated and starting swinging at balls way out of the zone so as to strike out and move the game along. Finally the pitcher threw a ball 5 feet over the head of a batter with 2 strikes. He swung at the ball, which sailed to the backstop and lay there. This was a live ball and a live runner, but the catcher remained in his crouch, as he didn't want to get anyone out, and the batter made no move toward 1st, as he didn't want to get on base, preferring instead to be tagged out. Eventually the ump ordered both players to make a play. There is some sort of rule covering this, something about players having to make a good faith effort to play the game properly, regardless of a potential rainout.
  17. I have to believe a Sox title would attach an added embarrassment factor to a Cubs failure in 2006. The Cubs players and coaches have pride and egos and I'm sure they run into the Sox players in social situations around town. How could it not be embarrassing to play for a $100M flop when the neglected crosstown rival is the world champ, and you have to actually live with the rival's players because they're your neighbors?
  18. I admit to having caught a bit of Sox fever. I have grown weary of Dusty Baker's idiocy and bad moves by Hendry. Basically, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. For example, the 2003 NLCS was entertaining but also maddening even when the Cubs were ahead because I could see stupid and costly mistakes being made by Baker. Stuff like that has worn me down. Until the past week I'd forgotten how much fun it is to cheer a team when you're not expecting the manager to do something stunningly stupid
  19. I'm actually cheering for the Sox, but I admit they're getting all the breaks. Poddy was out.
  20. I'm not so sure. Sports, pretty much at all levels, shy from requiring verbal calls because of numerous factors, including dialects, crowd noise, equipment, etc. The body gestures are supposed to have far fewer external factors. Give him a whistle then. :D Nah, put a rear view mirror in the catcher's helmet.
  21. Think about it. A catcher drops a low called strike 3 and the batter doesn't swing. How are the players to know it was strike 3? Is it the right hand straight out or does an ump yell strike 3 but doesn't pump the batter out? If the plate ump simply yelled "live runner" it would be clear what happened. It definately would help the catcher since he can't see him. The plate ump should definitely be required to use verbal signals for the catcher's benefit. The other umps can use visual signs.

  23. This is old news. viewtopic.php?t=25465&highlight=stock
  24. I can see the rules being changed as a result of this, particularly if the Sox win the series.
  25. The concept of the home plate ump asking for help simply doesn't work for a dropped strike 3 because it takes too long. Help should be automatic. The more I think about it I believe a strikeout should require the approval of 2 umps - at home plate and the appropriate line for LH or RH batters. That way when a catcher hears the home plate ump call a strikeout he can immediately look over to the 3B or 1B ump and get a visual 2nd verification. With this rule in place Josh Paul simply could have looked over at the 3B ump after Pierzynksi's swing, and if the ump had been animatedly pointing a finger down at the turf Paul would know that the ump was signaling a bounced ball and a live runner. Of course a standard fist would have signalled a K.
