  1. but Neifi is a better hitter from the right side than from the left It won't make any difference in how he's used.
  2. I can see Furcal at SS and a Neifi/Cedeno platoon at 2B, with Neifi getting all the starts vs. RHP's, which basically means Neifi is the starter.
  3. If Cedeno could switch hit and play the OF I'd say Macias is gone, but it's too early to count him out. We'll have to see how the OF situation plays out.
  4. It's embarrassing that such a stupid stat carries such weight in the supposed "thinking man's sport".
  5. With all the chatter we've heard about Furcal it's like the Cubs have forgotten that the real problem is the outfield.
  6. No one saw Hollandsworth's struggles coming? That's a laugh. Most of us here knew what would happen. People have said a MLB general manager has better things to do than look at message boards, but apparently that isn't true.
  7. I don't understand why anyone is buying this crap about Neifi being Cedeno's backup. Dusty has stated explicitly that he doesn't see Neifi as a utility player, and in 2005 Cedeno couldn't get regular playing time even after the Cubs fell out of the playoff race. Also, we are well acquainted with Dusty's pathology concerning L/R platooning of rookies. Does anyone really believe an RH-batting rookie will get regular starts vs. RH pitching when there is a veteran switch-hitter available, one who makes $2.5M no less? Dusty has also criticized Cedeno's defense, while he adores Neifi's. The only plausible best-case scenario for Cedeno is that he gets to start vs. LH pitching, which of course means Neifi is the starter. If Hendry can somehow acquire established stars at BOTH middle infield positions, then - and ONLY then - will Neifi be a bench player.
  8. If the only competition for a middle infield spot is Cedeno, then Neifi WILL start. It baffles me that anyone could believe otherwise.
  9. NO NO NO NO NO. Neifi has accumulated 57% of his career at bats as a member of the Colorado Rockies. Even if I don't need to explain the significance of that to you, I will anyway: 2005 was far in excess of Neifi's career norms, possibly even a career year. He is extremely likely to be for the 2006 Cubs what Tony Womack was for the 2005 Yankees.
  10. Sorry, Derrek. You can forget about the Triple Crown.
  11. Cy Young awards have no credibilty because they are heavily based on a stat which has no credibility.
  12. The Neifi quote I hate: "I think I showed them I can play every day." Neifi believes he's already earned a starting spot, and I'm sure Dusty and Hendry agree. $2.5 million is starter's money.
  13. Nobody is going to strong-arm Dusty into changing his lineup. If Dusty wants to start Neifi over Cedeno, then Neifi starts.
  14. "They'll" go with Cedeno? Who are "they"? I know Baker will NOT go with Cedeno, and I can't see Hendry issuing an ultimatum to Baker. Unless circumstances change significantly I am assuming the chance of Neifi securing a starting spot is 100%.
  15. Same here. All circumstances considered, I will be shocked if 2B isn't being reserved for Neifi. There will be a sham "competition", but the job is his. I don't even think it's his to lose, I think it's just plain his.
  16. SCFan asked earlier if Perez can even be dealt unitl June 15th....does anyone know if he can be? Yeah, that's what I want to know, too. Does it matter? The organization wuvs Neifi to itty bitty pieces. He will not be traded.
  17. Unfortunately in the eyes of the organization Neifi is not a defensive replacement, he is an everyday top-of-the-order player. Except that Hendry stated in his own words to the contrary. I don't think this move is exactly exciting or promising for the team. 2.5 million for a back-up is not smart economics at all, especially considering the prime off-season target (Furcal) isn't a SS that needs a back-up late-innings. It makes me think Neifi is there to be a back-up 2B, and his worth is only about 800k in that role. But people are so far beyond crazy with pages and pages of over-reaction with this that it is clear that the Neifi-factor is carrying far more weight in relevence than it actually deserves. So Hendry has a history of over-paying for bench players. It's not that big of a deal. Great, so who do you predict as the starting 2B? Cedeno Mmmmm, RH-batting rookie starts over switch-hitting veteran who makes $2.5M and is signed for 2 years? It could happen. And pigs could fly out of my butt.

  19. I'd be very suprised if Hendry isn't keeping 2B open for Neifi. He's not being paid $2.5M to sit on the bench. I suppose that could change if someone offers a deal for a veteran 2B that is too good to refuse.
  20. Unfortunately in the eyes of the organization Neifi is not a defensive replacement, he is an everyday top-of-the-order player.
  21. Yes we do. This organization is really predictable at times. If you've been hanging around this message board for a couple of years you'll find numerous instances in which the majority of members here knew exactly what the organization was going to do before it did it.
  22. Just heard Bruce Levine on the Score saying the deal is for 2 years and $5 MILLION. Awful, just awful.
  23. The odds of Hendry signing high-profile vets at both SS and 2B are close to zero, and Walker is now trade bait. Get used to it folks, Neifi Perez WILL be an opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs.
  24. Perez has been there you know. Where? I have no idea. This does put Walker in a precarious situation and I agree that no way Cedeno gets a shot over a veteran that just signed a 2 year deal. Perez said he wanted to start are they (Hendry+company) trying to tell us that Cedeno is in the picture? It's Holla/Dubois once again only I can't wait to hear the lame excuse they come up with when Perez is starting.. This is actually much worse than Holla/Dubois. As a left fielder, Holla could lose his job by hitting poorly for a month and a half, but all Neifi has to do is play respectable defense and he'll start all year and bat in front of Lee. Cedeno has no chance. NONE. I laugh at anyone who thinks a RH-batting rookie will get a chance vs. a switch-hitting veteran who is signed for 2 years and is Dusty's girlfriend.
