  1. Looking at Eyre's 2005 game logs I noticed he pitched a fair amount of complete innings, but I doubt he will for the Cubs. Dusty has a history of viewing LH relievers as LOOGYs even if they are obviously better-suited for other roles.
  2. For $3.66 mil. per year Eyre better be the best damn LOOGY I've ever seen. I'm going to whine like a little girl if lefties bat over .125 against him, and even if they don't I'll still whine because he makes $3.66M to face one batter per outing.
  3. $3.66 million per year for 3 years is a hell of a lot to pay for somone who will mostly pitch to one batter per appearance. It's a fine time to be a LOOGY.
  4. I think an Eyre signing probably means Rich Hill is trade bait. It doesn't look like the Cubs are going to give him a real shot at the rotation and the opportunity cost of keeping him as a redundant LOOGY would be prohibitive, considering how high his trade value is. I guess somebody has to fulfill the trade bait role, may as well be Hill. Personally I don't have a problem with Eyre except that he is emblematic of the overvaluing of LOOGYs. 3yrs. $10 million is too much.
  5. Yeah, I agree. IMO the huge dollar figures being bandied about for Furcal are only appropriate for players who have been kicking ass consistently for a long time. To be fair, Furcal has been more consitant than Beltran and far more than Beltre. If Renteria os worth marktet value, so is Furcal. Renteria is overpaid too.
  6. Yeah, I agree. IMO the huge dollar figures being bandied about for Furcal are only appropriate for players who have been kicking ass consistently for a long time.
  7. Does anyone here actually think there's a realistic chance the Cubs will get Giles? I don't.
  8. seriously. it's a winter tradition -- hendry signs a reliever that will eventually fall apart to a three year deal. At least he's a real LOOGY. Yeah, that's my thought too. Eyre has a normal L-R split, so Dusty will use him more or less correctly. I never want to see another reliever with a reverse split on the Cubs while Dusty is here.
  9. If it is true that the Yanks are interested in both Giles and Damon that means they are willing to part with Sheffield. It looks like Giles will almost certainly be too expensive for Hendry's liking, so I hope the Yanks get him, and Damon too. I want Gary Sheffield.
  10. Jones got a lot of MVP votes because he won 2 legs of the Triple Crown, but he did NOT deserve the RBI title. He hit 5 more home runs than Lee, other than that Jones did nothing to merit getting more MVP votes than Lee. Lee's paucity of RBI's is a direct result of the crappy batters his manager put in front of him. Should a player be penalized for having a stupid manager? I think a player should be rewarded based on how he handled the opportunities he had, not the number of those opportunities, over which he has no control.
  11. The MVP voters are neanderthals who belong in a museum. I am certain that stupid RBI title tipped the scales in Jones' favor relative to Lee, but the sad fact is there's no way Jones would have won the RBI title if he hadn't had a boatload more RBI opportunities than Lee or Pujols. Jones, who finished with only 5 HR more than Lee, was actually really bad with RISP and 32 of his HR were solo shots. If Lee's and Jones' numbers of at bats with RISP or men-on-base were flip-flopped Lee would have blown Jones out of the water in the RBI race and also in the MVP voting. You could make similar analogies for the Cy Young. A starting pitcher backed by a good offense and good bullpen will get many more opportunities to pick up a win than if he didn't have those advantages. I am not against these awards per se, but we need smarter voters.
  12. These awards will always be lame until the voters understand stats better. Jones getting all those 1st place votes based on RBI was just stupid, and giving out Cy Youngs based on W-L is an absolute embarrassment to the sport
  13. From what I've read you have to mix HGH with a cocktail of regular steroids to get the full benefit, but I still agree it sucks there's no testing for it.
  14. You are way too impressed by that silly RBI title. Jones' 128 RBI is another fine example of the heavy dependence of RBI numbers on opportunities. Jones didn't even do a very good job with the opportunities he did get, he just got so damn many that it didn't matter. Andruw Jones: AB w/ runners on: 297, .236 BA, 19 HR AB w/ RISP: 184, .207 BA Derrek Lee: AB w/ runners on: 236, .309 BA, 15 HR AB w/ RISP: 124, .331 BA Albert Pujols: AB w/ runners on: 272, .313 BA, 20 HR AB w/ RISP: 140, .329 BA
  15. I am glad someone in the organization has acknowledged the foolishness of relying on Kerry's health for a whole season. One of the main reasons I want another top-shelf SP is that I believe Kerry will most likely break down by mid-season.
  16. Jones got a lot more RBI opportunities than Lee. Maybe Hendry is willing to overpay for a proven leadoff man so he can Dusty-proof the lineup and keep Derrek happy. Andruw Jones: AB w/ runners on: 297 AB w/ RISP: 184 Derrek Lee: AB w/ runners on: 236 AB w/ RISP: 124
  17. Too bad Derrek had ice cold Neifi and Corey batting in front of him when he was at his hottest. He could very well have caught Pujols in the RBI race and ended with the 2nd highest total in the NL. That would have made the voting interesting.
  18. Oh my God ... :wall: The organization has totally fallen in love with Neifi. As long as he plays good defense I can't see him being cut or traded, even if his hitting regresses to his KC numbers.
  19. interesting stats, not quite Remlinger esque, but still interesting No, they're not as extreme as Remlinger's splits, but they're significant enough to scare me away as long as Dusty is here. That .292 bothers me. I guarantee you the first time MacDougal gives up a game-winning hit to a righty you'll hear plenty of bitching around here. I'd much rather stick with relievers with standard splits
  20. Right-hander Mike MacDougal's BAA: for 2002-2004 vs. LH: .240 vs. RH: .292 for 2005 vs. LH: .240 vs. RH: .270 This is NOT the type of pitcher you want to give to Dusty Baker.
  21. I would have hoped Hendry had learned to stay away from relievers with reverse splits. It'll be fun watching Dusty ignore the numbers and use MacDougal to try to get the crucial out against a tough RH bat.
  22. I have wanted a middle IF of Cedeno/Walker all along, but it ain't gonna happen. When Neifi was re-signed that was Walker's signal to pack his bags. I don't see Giles as a Cub either, simply because a lot of his value rests on his ability to draw walks, and Hendry doesn't think much of walks. The OF I'm really hoping for is Gary Sheffield.
  23. Cedeno's primary value is at SS, and I hate that the organization wants to move him to 2B. SS is the hardest position to fill, has the lowest offensive expectations and the highest defensive expectations. If we get Furcal I'd like to see Cedeno traded while his value is high rather than be stuck at 2B fighting for playing time with Neifi until 2008.
  24. I can't see Hairston coming back. We don't need him in the infield, and he is not attractive as a backup outfielder. Dusty doesn't like him anyway.
  25. I'm surprised there's not more talk about Sheffield. He is exactly what we need. I'd take him before Giles, even with his supposed personality issues.
