  1. So, again, what does it take to get him? Depends on what the other bidders are offering, but I would offer Hill and Cedeno to start. Furcal+Neifi means Cedeno will not get a fair chance with the Cubs until 2008 at the earliest. I'd rather sell him while his value is high. I would also trade Hill+Pie for Beckett, but I'd much prefer moving Cedeno before Pie.
  2. Kerry and Maddux are gone after 2006, so picking up Beckett now would just mean we're moving up the replacement timetable one year, which IMO is advisable given the shaky health of Kerry and Prior, and also the fact that a talent like Beckett doesn't come on the market every day.
  3. I'm all about getting another ace in the rotation, as I expect Kerry to break down by mid-season at the latest and Prior makes me nervous. If Beckett is available I'd sell a good chunk of the farm for him.
  4. Don't overestimate the intelligence of the Pirates organization. You can't assume there's a logical reason behind anything the Pirates do. I can reasonably assume they know more about a player than people like me, who only read the papers and occasionally get to see a player. I'll bet the Cubs don't jump on him either. I know enough not to hold back young talent for obvious garbage like Randall Simon, Chris Stynes, or Darryl Ward. The Pirates are just a dumb team, and I don't assume they know more than anybody.

  6. The most interesting question to me is how serious the Yanks are about acquiring both Damon and Giles. Getting both those guys definitely puts Sheffield on the open market.
  7. Hill would be fine for the bench. Just because the Pirates never gave him much of a chance doesn't mean he didn't deserve one.
  8. I thought Lawton was a decent gamble at the time, but he went ice cold after the Cubs got him. Nothing to be done about that. What was really unfortunate and avoidable was that so much time was wasted with Hollandsworth. If the Cubs were going to give up on Dubois after a month of regular play I would have liked that month to be April, after which Hendry should have gone into May looking for a proper LF instead of screwing around with Holla until August. It was all so stupid and so predictable.
  9. The Baseball Prospectus article mentioned in another thread pointed out how dumb it was to dump Leicester just to retain Macias on the 40-man to offer him arby.
  10. I'd be shocked if he doesn't get a waiver, and yes, I can see lots of other players trying to get waivers too. ADD is notoriously over-diagnosed in children, now you'll see adults trying to get in on the action. ADD medications are already popular study aids for college students.
  11. I refer you to my previous post that discusses his ADD and how he credits getting a drug that helps him with it with turning his career around. It could be that he bucks the trend of people falling after having a career year. It seems he actually has somthing he can point to that has made a difference for him. If his treatment for ADD has improved his pitching, then let him show it for more than one season before you give him a huge contract.
  12. I've always thought there's something inherently elitist about preferring cold weather. I don't think anyone actually enjoys cold per se, so much as they enjoy feeling insulated from the cold, and insulating yourself from the cold is expensive. The only people I have ever known who say they enjoy cold are very financially well-off, work in comfortable indoors environments, and can easily afford high heating bills, high vehicle maintenance costs, etc.
  13. Agreed. No use in not welcoming him. If the team plays well enough, he's the kind of guy wo could help us in the playoffs. We can hope anyway. I'd be happy to have Eyre, but not at 3yrs/11mil.
  14. I'm not saying I want Burnitz, but I don't think he'll be real expensive anymore. He's now at the level where he'll probably get offers to start from hopeless small market teams, but not from any contenders.
  15. That stuff about wanting to play someplace closer to his home in Florida is total BS. Chicago is closer to Florida than California is, but it's still far away, and anyway, what is the actual difference in flight time between a California/Florida trip compared to Chicago/Florida flight? Maybe 3 hours? You can't take a nap or read a stinkin' book for 3 hours on the plane? Maybe I'm cynical, but I think $11 million dollars are why he's in Chicago.
  16. Does anybody really doubt that Eyre got this contract because he's coming off a career year, one which was easily his best? He'll be 34 next May, and 36 in May of 2008, when he's making $4M. I see absolutely no reason to believe he'll match his 2005 numbers with the Cubs.
  17. Dusty really does have a strong bias to viewing LH relievers as "matchup" guys, to be used to get tough outs vs. LH batters. Maybe Eyre will be the exception but I doubt it.
  18. If I could make a list of roles that a GM should have a good chance of filling cheaply, LOOGY might be at the top of the list. The Braves rountinely trust their farm system to produce STARTERS, real everyday difference-makers. You'd think the Cubs could reach into their farm system and find a stinkin LOOGY they trust.
  19. I'm not so sure. Vishnu can throw with one hand and wear gloves on the other 3. Is he available? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fr/thumb/a/a6/Vishnu.jpg/250px-Vishnu.jpg
  20. Yeah, I agree. LOOGY is one those peripheral roles that your farm system should be able to fill, and in the case of the Cubs, it did. Ohman could have done the job for a lot less.
  21. Makes you wonder what in the heck is Rusch and his 3mil going to do now that Eyre has been signed... Rusch was brought back to be a starter, and Eyre's signing only makes me more sure of that.
  22. I'm not sure what type of reaction you expect when you make a statement like "get over yourselves", followed up by some wise-ass insults.
  23. Isn't overspending on servicable old pitchers how the Yankees got themselves in trouble? Yeah, the Yankees sure have gotten some great bang for their buck lately. That's definitely a team worth emulating, NOT.
  24. You should post more often so you'll get banned sooner and we can be rid of you.
