  1. Hendry has to get Perez or someone like him. He won't be expensive, and if we have to overpay a few hundred K it would be well worth it and a helluva lot better investment than Macias at $825K
  2. There might be some interest in Perez. I'll look into it. Hendry absolutely has to get a platoon partner for Jones, since Jones' offense vs. LHP is at Jose Macias level. I don't think anyone here would be crazy enough to go into opening day with Macias as our projected starting RF vs. LHP's. A Jones/Perez platoon could provide decent production. I'll all for it.
  3. This is where I disagree a little. As the LH half of a platoon, and facing all RH starting pitchers, Jones would get the lion's share of the playing time, since LH starting pitching is scarce. I absolutely agree no team would give a player $5.33 million per year to face only LH pitching, but it is not unthinkable for RH pitching, and Jones really does need a platoon partner, as he is certifiably horrible vs. LHP's.
  4. The most disturbing aspect of this offseason is all the multi-year committments. We're married to some very questionable players for 2 and 3 years.
  5. And your plan to get tejada is... I do agree we need another superstar to be considered a realistic contender. If we just add more expensive but non-difference-making players like Eyre/Howry/Jones then suckage is all but certain.
  6. I'm not a stat guy, but those projections don't look bad. Am I wrong? I'd like to see their projections for Neifi, because he will be the real starter.
  7. Yeah but what if Jones would like to win 80 games in Chicago instead of winning 68 in KC? I'm sure he'd like to play for a winner. Jim to Jacque: "Every kid dreams of playing for an 80 game winner in the big leagues. Let me make that dream happen for you, Jacque."
  8. You really think if Holla was hitting 270 or better he would have come out of the lineup? He was terrible and Baker kept him in there and there is no doubt in my mind that Baker will do the same with Mabry, especially if the Cubs do not aquire a left bat for right. Dusty says a lot of things but he usually goes back to doing the things he is comfortable with and that's playing the vets. I have little doubt that Baker will properly limit Mabry's PA, but I don't think 450 is realistic. Anything over 200, though, is too much. I don't think Dusty is eager to start but Mabry, but it all comes down to Murton's performance vs. RH pitching. I'm going to be very tense those first few weeks every time Matty starts vs. an RHP.
  9. Burnie will want to start. Remember when he guaranteed 30 homers for 2005? His ego won't let him accept a bench job on a contender when there are crappy small market teams that will give him a last hurrah as a starter.
  10. There is a decent chance Mabry could bat .270 vs. RHP's, which is all it would take to make Dusty consider an L/R platoon. If Murton has a bad April vs. RHP's and Mabry has a good one I guarantee you things will get ugly. 450 AB's is not outside the realm of possiblity, since a straight L/R platoon heavily favors the lefty.
  11. Agreed. I think Nomar should be playing LF if anything. How is he going to make those stretches from 1b after a season where he completely tore up his groin? Glad to see him go to the Dodgers instead of the Astros though. It would have been pretty much a guarantee that he would have killed us if he played for the Astros. Does he have to stretch? McGriff never did when he was with the Cubs. He caught the ball right in front of the chest while standing stiffly upright. Karros only stretched a little. Sometimes veteran 1B's are cut quite a lot of slack for lazy defense.
  12. The Cubs really did nuke those guys down the stretch. They finished #1 and #2 in the major leagues in pitches per game for the season, and the pitch counts down the stretch were especially brutal. They haven't been the same since then. Coincidence? You have to wonder.
  13. I want a German outfield, because I actually still know some German. The closest I've come is Hollandsworth, who is not German, but has Hitler's birthday.
  14. If Murton stumbles early vs. RH pitching it's very likely we could see a Jones/Murton platoon in LF, Pierre in CF, and Patterson in RF.
  15. If Hendry gets a veteran starting SS I absolutely want to trade Cedeno while his value is high. The alternative is watching Cedeno play in a stifling platoon that has Neifi Perez facing all the RHP's.
  16. I grew up in the Washington D.C. area and every Cowboys game was a huge deal. Some kids at my high school would call themselves Cowboys fans, I'm sure just to irritate other people. It really did bug me at the time.
  17. In order for that study to be of use, seems to me you'd have to figure out a way to account for the times a strong arm kept an outfielder from having to make a throw. On a shallow sac fly, I suspect a runner on third is a lot more likely to run on Manny than Ichiro. It's true that when facing a competent 3rd base coach a strong OF arm's greatest value is as a deterrent.
  18. I would have put the head of Jose Macias in his bed.
  19. Don't worry....Dusty will take of that problem for you in regards to Murton. Mabry will be playing LF for the majority of the games until he hits below 200 and then he'll just platoon with Murton. If Murton starts poorly against RH pitching then he will certainly lose a lot of AB's to the LH veteran Mabry. Any rookie who only bats right-handed is at a terrible disadvantage on a Dusty Baker team.
  20. If Murton had the gotten the proper playing time we wouldn't have this uncertainty. We can thank Dusty for this.
  21. Don't worry, Burnitz will still be available in February. That doesn't help us one bit. We can't negotiate with him until May 1. If we're needing him and he's still around then, we won't be. Edit: Post #666, this thread is bound to burst in flames. Sorry, I forgot we can't get him til May. I was being sarcastic anyway. He sucks.
  22. Dusty would definitely put Pie in RF. Dusty is very picky about RF defense, particularly throwing, and I'm certain he will never put Murton in RF while there is any alternative. Pierre would stay put because he is a "proven" CF.
  23. Don't worry, Burnitz will still be available in February.
  24. I think some people here overemphasize the importance of LF defense. Lots of teams use LF as a dumping ground for crappy defenders and do just fine. IMO Murton's defense in LF is not a valid reason to go with Pierre/Patterson in CF/RF because the offensive penalty is way too high, and Murton is really not even all that bad compared to a lot of LF's.
  25. The Sox won 16 of their last 17 games. You could argue it was a fluky hot streak but it's still pretty damn impressive, especially considering the quality of the opponents.
