  1. I don't know if the Lawton acquistion proves anything about Hendry's attitudes toward OBP and walks, since it just was an act of desperation forced by Corey's total failure, and there weren't many other options at the time. I would guess if a Randall Simon equivalent(.300 career BA, very few walks) had been available for the OF Hendry would taken him before Lawton. I would also guess if Corey had batted .300 he would have stayed at the top of the order even if he never walked once all year. Neifi batted 2nd, never walked, and Hendry just gave him a big raise.
  2. The O's could be decent in 2007 and great in 2008 if they would just accept the necessity for rebuilding in 2006. Instead they'll probably keep sucking for the rest of the decade.
  3. I really can't buy into your thinking as a sound way of doing a risk assessment. Your thinking would make any moderate-sized front-loaded multi-year contract look safe, which is certainly not the case, especially for a mediocrity like Jones, who is making starter's money, but is a significant risk to perform poorly enough that no contender will want him as an everyday player after 2006.
  4. Didnt they say Neifi was only back-up when he signed in 2004? ... I dont really expect one of Dusty's boys to only get the back-up. How can Grissom be one of Dusty's boys when he's never played for him? Macias and Hollandsworth had never played for Dusty either... Yeah, at this point in Dusty's tenure we can make a solid educated guess at which players Dusty might fall in love with.
  5. We're not going to get a quality everyday player for Corey. What we do need is a true 4th outfielder, i.e. someone who could play everyday for a while if someone gets hurt, and not wreck the season in the process. There has to be somebody out there who fits that description.
  6. That's where a more productive farm system would help. We shouldn't have to go dumpster diving for the likes of Marquis Grissom.
  7. I'd like some insurance too but we are in HUGE trouble if Grissom becomes an everyday player for any length of time. As injury insurance Grissom is useless, I'd rather use Corey for that. He at least has a chance of returning to being a decent everyday guy.
  8. I can see Rusch being this year's Shawn Estes and Hill being this year's Juan Cruz. Rusch will definitely get multiple chances to redeem any failures. I still wonder how Cruz' career would have turned out if he had never been converted to relief. He was really a pretty good starter. Hill could face the same fate.
  9. I agree with those who think Hill's career has reached the point where you have to play him or trade him. I was hoping he would be traded while his value was high but it looks like it won't happen. I really don't want him used as a reliever. Hendry blew huge bucks on the bullpen and those guys need to earn their dough. Hill should remain a starter until he proves he can't hack it.
  10. If Grissom faces nothing but LHP he would be OK, but I said the same thing about Eric Karros.
  11. Rotoworld says the Pirates have made Burnitz a big offer. It would be amusing to see Burnitz and Sosa in the same outfield.
  12. I know this is just a minor league contract, but we currently have no other RH-swinging OF for the bench, so unless Hendry gets another one Grissom is pretty well assured of making the team if he can put up spring training numbers which aren't totally horrible.
  13. The NHL Players Association's blunder is tops IMO, because it damaged every player's career and earnings throughout an entire sport, as well as doing grievous harm to the overall health of the sport. That's much more impressive than an individual act of stupidity that only hurts one person. Having said that, I still have to give Nomar Glassiaparra props for turning down 4yrs/$60M.
  14. 33) The Cubs will "feed off the energy" of Jacque Jones. This will result in superior play. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051220&content_id=1285214&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  15. Perez started 46 games in RF for the Cards in 2003, so he can play the position, although I don't know how well. The main reasons to get him are that he mashes LHP and Jacque Jones desperately a platoon partner, since Jones' offense vs. LHP is unacceptable even for a utility infielder. It would be worthwhile to accept a defensive penalty in RF to replace a truly horrible bat with a very good one.
  16. The thing that bothers me most is that Dusty will certainly use Grissom's career numbers vs. individual pitchers to justify giving him more starts. Those numbers are of dubious value for any player, but when you're talking about a 39 year old with severely diminished skills they are meaningless.
  17. I'm guessing Grissom will be used as Eric Karros was in 2003. He'll face all the lefties, plus the righties he has good career numbers against, and Murton will sit on those days. Mabry's playing time in the OF will suffer some. He'll probably have to wait to for Aram's first injury or Murton's first slump before he gets significant time.
  18. I guarantee Dusty will use Grissom vs. any righty against whom he has good career numbers. Dusty loves those stupid matchup numbers, and Grissom has been around since the dawn of time, so he has plenty of history vs. NL pitchers.
  19. Wow. 36 year old corner outfielder puts up a .757 OPS and gets a RAISE, and a multiyear contract to boot. Who the hell are the O's bidding against? I'd like to think the O's are overpaying, because if this offer is actually necessary to secure Burnitz's services then this FA market is completely irrational.
  20. GREASE.
  21. I think we're going to see a lot more players fessing up after getting caught. They have seen the public reaction to Raffy's BS and know that nobody believes the denials. The players who will continue to lie are the ones who have a shot at the Hall of Fame. I don't expect Sammy to ever admit to cheating.
  22. Strictly an AL player at this point.
  23. Derrek Lee is the guy who has the most reason to be upset with the organization. He had a legit shot at the MVP but all those games with Patterson/Perez at the top of order killed his chances in the RBI race, and Lee is smart enough to know it. I bet Lee's shabby treatment annoyed Prior too.
  24. If and when that happens, you got it. Seems to me Walker is one of the bigger bargains on the team right now. My advice is go ahead and write it now and leave blanks where you can insert the names of the bums the Cubs get.
  25. Somehow, SF beats the odds and even though I thought it was impossble for them to get older, they do it. Finley, Bonds, and Alou. Can anyone here recall a worse defensive outfield? It might be on the short list of the very worst in history.
