    Heeeeeere's Neifi... .263/.295/.358 in 407 PA, 1.7 VORP .295 OBP? He's gotten 57% of his career at bats with the Rockies and still only has a career .301 OBP. He'll be 33 in June and he's not in Colorado anymore. .295 seems very optimistic to me.

    Walker's finished here. If PECOTA wants to be realistic it should do a projection for Neifi.

    For a Cubs world championship, or solely for personal amusement, I would gladly have the NBA disbanded and all its arenas sold to Iran.

    Yeah, it's a really stupid but unfortunately entrenched idea. I'm sure Dusty wants it this way since his boy Neifi can't sustain above-Little-League level hitting for more than a few weeks at a stretch, which means a brief competition is the only type that gives Neifi a chance to win.

    If we get a significant contribution from Kerry as a starter I'll consider it an early Christmas gift. He may be valuable in the pen though. Of Williams/Rusch/Miller at least one is likely to suck. Williams will probably be at least serviceable, but I'm not expecting anything spectacular. Prior is still questionable IMO. I can't imagine the pundits will look at our rotation and use the "Murderer's Throw" moniker again, at least not without laughing.

    Williams is better than a bottom feeder. His performance puts him in the top 30 starters in the NL, which is equivalent to a 2 starter. OK, I admit it's unkind to call Williams a bottom feeder, but I doubt he was a top 30 guy unless you throw out his lousy games with the Giants. He does have a 3.92 career ERA, so he could be considered decent.

    We have Z, Prior(still waiting for 2003 version to return), and a bunch of 4/5 bottom-feeder types for the rotation. And then there's Kerry, in whom I have zero faith. I really wish Hendry had tried to get someone better than a reclamation project for the rotation.

    Macias is my permanent poster child for the overratedness of versatility. What a horrendous MLB career he had.

    Hendry is well on his way to compiling a legendary track record with big-money relief signings. It's become the reliever's kiss of death to sign for 3+ mil. with the Cubs. I can't wait to see how Howry and Eyre turn out.

    Good signing in and of itself, but it does underscore my disappointment that Hendry didn't pursue another top-3 type starter, which we need IMO, and Wade Miller ain't it.

    Can't they just talk him into accepting a trade to the AL? He knows his throwing arm is in awful shape. How can he be so stupid to want to stay in the NL?

    How embarrassing would it be to get stuck with a $2.5M player you don't even want, whom you only re-signed to use as trade bait? Jim really should have done a little more research before starting down this road.

    It is funny to think Macias is one year removed from getting a RAISE from the Cubs to 2.5 times the MLB minimum salary, and now he can't even get an offer for the minimum. It's even funnier that all us message board geeks knew this was likely to happen but ol' Jimbo didn't.

    Bettis already has enough credentials for Canton but it would be cool to see him get his ring and retire a champion.

    I can honestly say I've been on the Steelers' bandwagon since the last few weeks of the regular season. I really did think they were one of the most dangerous teams in the playoffs.

    Grace and Walker both never pulled any punches. They told it how it is, and I respect that. I respect Grace's honesty, but not when he is honest about behaving like a Neanderthal.

    Cedeno is already a very good defender, and has the physical skills to surpass Neifi's defense, so there was no excuse to keep trotting Neifi out last year for his glove. Dusty came up with that disgusting comment about Ronny needing to straighten his throws if he wanted to be a major league shortstop, which of course was just a BS excuse to keep Neifi in the lineup.

    I can't see how anyone could talk of Neifi as a gold glover these days. He's very good defensively, but certainly not GG calibre anymore. GG shortstops are supposed to make amazing plays, not just good ones. Neifi doesn't have the range to do anything amazing. I saw Cedeno get to a couple of balls that I'm sure Neifi wouldn't have reached.

    If you keep McGwire out based on steroidal suspicion then you might as well put an asterisk on the whole decade of the 90's. MLB should have cracked down on the juicers 15 years ago, unfortunately it didn't. The users have now compiled stats and records that are in the official books. Do we just ignore all those numbers?

    I considered Huff a roid suspect when he finished June with only 5 HR on the season, but then he went on to hit another 17 in Jul/Aug/Sep, so now I'm not so sure.

    Neifi is not a Hall of Famer, but Lee could be. Unfortunately Lee has ZERO chance at an RBI title with Neifi batting in front of him, and that will likely keep him out the 2006 MVP race, as it did in 2005. Stuff like that makes me very angry.

    I don't pay much attention to defensive metrics. As much as I dislike Neifi overall, I have never been unwilling to admit that his defense is very good.

    If you put Neifi in front of Derrek Lee he'll cost you way more than 18 runs. Look at Lee's monthly RBI totals from 2005: APR - 28 MAY - 18 JUN - 19 JUL - 18 AUG - 11 SEP - 13 Not surprisingly, Lee's one good month of RBI production was Neifi's hot April. In the other 5 months Lee averaged 15.8 RBIs, which is absolutely pathetic considering his other numbers. Neifi's presence cost us way more than 18 runs, and I have never come so close to wishing injury on one of my team's players as I was with Neifi last year.

    & you will still think this if he reverts back to his 02'/03' numbers? that's not going to happen, those were his prime years. yes it could happen then i guess every signing is a good one since theres a chance they could be good or i suppose we could analyze player acquisitions based on whether or not it's at all likely that they're going to be good Man, we should re-sign Sosa. If he reverts to his 02 or 03 form we're looking at a .950 OPS or so Let's get Bret Boone too.
