  1. I doubt many intelligent people put much stock in Hendry's public statements anymore because his words and actions are plainly out of synch at times. In light of the Rusch and Eyre signings I find it impossible to believe that Hill is not available for the right price. Hendry has also talked up Cedeno but is bending over backwards to keep Cedeno out of the everyday lineup, and Cedeno also continues to play SS in Venezuela, so I also believe he is available. Hendry ran a similar BS campaign last year with the "Dubois as Rookie of the Year" talk, then it was later exposed that Dubois was never intended to be more than a pine-rider with the Cubs. As a BS artist Hendry is at the crayons and fingerpaint level.
  2. Cruz's career stats suck, but they're still a lot better than Neifi's because Neifi has gotten 57% of his career at bats with the Rockies. A choice between Cruz at 1yr/$800K and Neifi at 2ys/$5M is a no-brainer, unless you're Jim Hendry.
  3. If we don't get Lugo we'd be reduced to pursuing 3rd tier talent at SS. Once you get that far down the talent ladder the exercise beomes pointless unless your in-house options are totally awful. May as well go with the guys we already have. Perez is going to get a ton of playing time regardless of what happens, so the idea of just getting any warm body to keep Perez in a utility role is not smart thinking.
  4. Other than Lugo, is there any SS available who could plausibly be portrayed as a significant upgrade over the in-house options?
  5. Hendry is now eyeing 2nd tier shortstops, but he continues to hype Cedeno in public. Who does he think he's fooling? Other GM's have to be laughing every time Hendry talks up Cedeno.
  6. Gary Sheffield is a cancer I'd love to see in the Cubs clubhouse.
  7. Dusty is annoyingly finicky about RF throwing arms. I can't see him being happy with Dunn/Murton at the corners.
  8. I hope he weighs 160 lbs. on opening day and ends the season with 5 home runs.
  9. I haven't seen that quote(link?). I can't say it surprises me, I always knew Neifi would start over Cedeno.
  10. when the hell did this happen? im just about done with the jerks who run the cubs I am too optimistic sometimes. I have been saying I fully expect Kerry to break down by mid-season, but it appears he will be broken on Opening Day.
  11. One encouraging thing was that Baker was obviously not interested in bringing Burnitz back as a starter. He also recognized the awfulness of the outfield.
  12. Not surprisingly, the most embarassing stuff was about Hollandworth. Dusty talked about Holla's "track record" from 2004 and how that created high expectations for 2005. Amazing that a big league manager would believe a mediocre over-30 career backup could be an everyday LF based on a mere 167 plate appearances from the previous season.
  13. What if reliever prices don't drop back down to "sane levels"? This sounds like just speculation & predictions to me & nothing else. I can't see these prices being sustainable. If they persist MLB bullpens will soon eat up a portion of the average team's payroll that is grossly disproportionate to their actual contribution to winning.
  14. I think some people here might want to take a longer view. If FA reliever prices drop back to sane levels next year, as I expect they will, then none these signings will look smart. It reminds of the late 90's when stock analysts would talk about "bargains" in the dotcom sector. Truth was, NONE of those stocks were bargains. They were all wildly overpriced, only some were more wildly overpriced than others. Nobody who bought that crap as a longterm investment ended up being happy about it. Even the relative bargains were horrible investments.
  15. Stupidty would be ignoring your BP problem Yeah, but throwing huge bucks at mediocre 30-something relievers coming off career years is not the best way of fixing anything. To justify what they're being paid Eyre and Howry will need to stay close to their 2005 numbers for the next 3 years. Based on their track records it's crazy to expect that, and I could say the same about Farnsworth. People are just wildly overpaying for relief pitching now. It's like some kind of infectious disease.
  16. This a silly silly market for relief pitching. In my eyes no GM is smart who lowers himself to get involved in this carnival of stupidity. You can argue that the Eyre/Howry signings were less dumb than some other deals we're seeing, but 'less dumb' does not equal 'smart'
  17. So he turned down 5/55 for 3/30? That's a $25 million dollar difference. He must be thinking retirement in 3 years.
  18. At 5/55 I think we can say the Cubs are officially out of the bidding.
  19. I pity Matt Murton if he has a bad April vs. RH pitching.
  20. In order to assure Neifi isn't starting, I'd be willing to overpay a little bit. 5/50 is doable for someone who isn't injury prone, but is consistant like he is. How is Furcal consistent? In 2005, his contract year, his stolen bases went way up and his errors went way down, otherwise he wouldn't be getting near the type of offers he's getting now. Furcal's OBP the past three years: .352, .344, .348. His SLG: .443, .414, .429. His SB%: 93%, 83%, 82%. His BB and K are also nearly identical over the past three years. In fact, his SB and Errors are the only two stats that are at all out of line with his norms. Last year wan't even his best in the past few years, 2003 was. Furcal is pretty darn consistent. Yeah I know that stuff, but it's his 2005 SB and E numbers that have convinced people he's a defensive and base-stealing wizard, and an elite lead-off hitter. Take away those two numbers and he wouldn't be getting these ridiculous offers.

  22. One year ago Farnsy's stock was in the toilet, then he has one good season, now he's getting 3yrs. $15M. This market has a relief pitcher bubble in it. I can't see these prices being sustainable, especially for the middle relief.
  23. How does $5M for Farns make Hendry look good? Hendry is the primary culprit in creating these ridiculous prices, so it seems silly to me to cite the byproduct of his stupidity as a cause for praise.
  24. Pena might be a good fit on a lot of teams, but as far as the Cubs are concerned he's another right-handed power hitter who doesn't walk enough, which makes him too similar to the people we already have.
