  1. I think if we don't sign Furcal, Nomar coming back would be a good thing. I'm personally more concerned about the OF over everything else though. This is going to be a complicated offseason for the Cubs. Once you accept that Neifi is going to start somewhere somehow and there's not a damn thing to done about it, suddenly a low-base/high-incentive contract for Nomar doesn't seem so awful.
  2. I've warmed back up to Nomar a bit since Neifi re-signed. Previously I was dead set against Nomar largely because I thought he would miss way too much time and some crummy backup would play at least half the season. BUT . . . since Neifi's re-signing I have accepted the unfortunate fact that Dusty will find a way to start Neifi all year, and since he's going to start anyway, Nomar's missed time really wouldn't make as big a difference as it might. Worst-case scenario injury-wise for Nomar would have Neifi shifting to SS, Cedeno to full-time 2B, and unfulfilled incentive clauses that would yield lots of saved $$ that would come in very handy for late-season moves..
  3. I wanted Cedeno and Walker in the infield. Furcal is making me happy by overpricing himself, too bad Neifi didn't do the same.
  4. Too bad for the Cubs. Levine says 4 year deal from Yanks for about $12M per year.
  5. Great point Vance, we will also have to pay a premium because Cincy will not want to trade him within the division if they can get something comparable somewhere else Yeah, put yourself in the Reds' shoes. You are going to trade Adam Dunn to a division rival, then the jagoffs give you a list of minor leaguers you can't have. Would you put up with that? I wouldn't.
  6. If you want Dunn you can't tell the Reds you have untouchables in the minors. Everyone must be available.
  7. If we get Kearns that also means Murton is gone. I can't see Hendry going with Murton and Kearns as the starting corner OF's. I thought Kearns was a good defensive RF? I doubt defense would be the issue. I just don't think Hendry would be comfortable with the offense with Murton/Kearns at the corner OF positions, not after being embarrassed by Holla/Burnitz.
  8. If we get Kearns that also means Murton is gone. I can't see Hendry going with Murton and Kearns as the starting corner OF's.
  9. I agree. That's why I think Murton would be in the package for Dunn. That's what I'm thinking too. As much as I'd like to see Cedeno and Murton start, if Hendry can get good value for them and get players that Dusty will actually want to start then Ronny and Matty must go!
  10. If we get Dunn and Hendry views Dunn's defense as suitable only for LF that means Murton is as good as gone.
  11. So who plays RF with Dunn and Murton on the team, but not Kearns? My impression is that the Cubs don't think Murton has the arm for RF, I don't know what they think about Dunn's arm. Maybe Hendry wants a package deal where we get Dunn and Kearns, and the Reds get Murton.
  12. Too much of Giles' production is tied to his ability to draw lots and lots of walks. Hendry won't pay big $$ for a bunch of walks, it's not his style.
  13. To beat a perjury charge Raffy would just need reasonable doubt about whether he was juicing before testifying, so it would probably be impossible to convict him. Of course we all know he's almost certainly guilty.
  14. A career 268/325 guy who went 286/340 with back problems!?!?!? I think so. Karros only had decent numbers when Dusty could match him up vs. lefties and crappy righties. When Karros had to play every day his utter inability to hit any semi-competent RH pitching was exposed and his numbers plummeted. The Karros we saw was a slow runner, a below average defender, could only play 1B, had well below average power for his position, and could only hit LH pitching. If that was his career year that's a pretty sad commentary on his career.
  15. Cedric Benson's agent, Eugene Parker. I hate these agents telling draftees to hold out for the whole preseason if need be. It hurts the player's career and it hurts his team.
  16. Bartolo & Andre. http://www.sanspo.com/mlb/allstar/2005/image/a-11.jpghttp://www.nndb.com/people/580/000056412/andre-mug-sized.jpg
  17. Can Helton play the outfield? I noticed he started 14 games in the OF in 1997.
  18. I disagree. While it is true that several people predicted that Hollandsworth wouldn't produce anywhere near the numbers he put up in '04 before he got injured, no one predicted that he would be so far under his career averages. And no one predicted that Hollandsworth would start the year the way he did. No one. WRONG. Going into 2005 Hollandsworth had 1351 at bats in this decade, 582 of them with the Rockies. People here specifically brought this up as a reason to believe he would finish well below his career norms. Look at his stats. Ever since the 90's he's generally sucked aside from his time with the Rockies. Also, when you stop using a player predominantly in favorable matchups and start throwing him out there 5 or 6 times a week you have to expect lower numbers. Lots of us here knew this.
  19. Looking on the bright side, if Neifi has to start, he's a lot easier to stomach at SS than at 2B.
  20. If it were up to me I'd pass on Furcal, but if Hendry absolutely has to get him I like that he's moving aggressively.
  21. Hendry says a lot of BS for public consumption. He said Sosa would our right fielder for 2005 and talked up Dubois as a Rookie of the Year candidate when Dusty had planned all along to use him as nothing more than a bench player. If we get Furcal and Cedeno still actually starts at 2B it will represent a complete departure from everything we've seen from Dusty in the past.
  22. Furcal with a 4 year deal and Neifi signed through 2007 means Cedeno would be blocked until 2008. If we get Furcal it would be foolish not to trade Cedeno now, while his value is high, since 2 years on the bench certainly wouldn't increase his value, and who wants to wait til 2008 to see what he could do as a starter? I don't.
  23. The leadoff man gets the most at bats of anyone in the lineup and has the best chance of making the last out of any given game. How many times did we see Neifi ground out to end the game for a loss as Lee stood in the on deck circle?
  24. Until recently I would have been against pursuing Zito because the cost in prospects would be too high, but since Hendry is now content to sign Glendons and Neifis for roles that could be filled by rookies, I wouldn't mind sending Cedeno and Hill to Oakland for Zito.
  25. This organization has developed a love affair with Neifi and won't use him as trade bait except in the most extreme emergency. Also, his salary and the extra year on his contract diminish his attractiveness as a late-season rental in 2006.
