  1. If we get Furcal Cedeno doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting regular playing time. Don't think terrible hitting by Neifi will cost him his job at 2B either. Neifi went through some prolonged horrendous slumps in 2005 and saw no reduction in his playing time. Even falling out of the playoff race couldn't get Cedeno more action. Fact is, unless Hendry signs high-profile stars at both SS and 2B, Neifi is virtually guaranteed a starting spot. Why do you think he agreed to stay? He stated he wanted a starting job for 2006, and I bet he's smart enough to know that this stuff about Cedeno competing for a spot is a joke.
  2. Rotoworld thinks Burnett will get 5/65 from the Mariners. I don't see Hendry matching that, but I bet Burnett won't get that much.
  3. I have never understood this stuff about getting players because they are leaders or mentors. The manager and coaching staff are supposed to fill those roles, it's a major part of their job description. The quest for player-mentors is what leads to travesties like paying $9 million for Greg Maddux.
  4. Ron Coomer really bugged me when he was with the Cubs. Besides his horrible play, he had the most irritating facial expressions when he was in the field. Sort of a macho glare with a smug little half smirk. I hated that damn smirk. Sometimes he'd get this silly dramatic sort of look too. His huge gut and fat ass were not endearing either.
  5. This is an organization that thought Todd Hollandsworth was an adequate starting LF, so it won't surprise one bit if it also thinks Neifi is an adquate starting 2B.
  6. If Neifi comes back and his only competition for a starting spot is a rookie, guess who starts.
  7. And we were worried Cedeno's offense might be substandard for 2B. We KNOW Neifi's is.
  8. Levine scooped the Rusch contract before anybody
  9. what about guys like williams, hill, pinto, & perhaps guzman & marshall (if they can stay healthy) to go along with prior, z & rusch? We have plenty of 4 and 5 type pitchers, I'd like at least more SP who's better than that.
  10. I'm guessing if we sign Burnett, a few of those pitchers will be going...especially Williams. Maybe Hendry is trying to build a powerhouse here... if he goes out and gets Giles, Furcal, and AJ, he'd be well on his way. The offense would be solid and the starting pitching would be absurd. We can only dream... I've said it before, if healthy (BIG IF, I KNOW), that rotation would be incredibly imposing, especially in the playoffs... Z, Prior, Burnett, Wood, Maddux.. =P~ =P~ =P~ My prediction is Kerry will end 2006 as the world's most expensive setup man.
  11. I applaud this. Kerry and Maddux are gone after 2006, so why not get ahead of the curve and seek replacements now? Our window will soon be closing anyway, and IMO it would be foolish to trust Kerry to stay healthy enough to start all year. Whether it's Burnett or Millwood or whoever, we need another top shelf SP.
  12. I don't think Hendry can afford to think that way as long as Dusty is here. As the Cubs GM you do pretty much have to hand the rookie a spot, otherwise it will go to some Hollandsworth type.
  13. And if Cedeno ends up being a mediocre offensive player (.260/.320), where does that help them in the grand scheme? That's my question too. You can tolerate .260/.320 from a good defensive SS, but not from a 2B, and Cedeno's defensive talents would be wasted at 2B. I absolutely HATE the idea of moving him there.
  14. or move Walker & give both Cedeno & Furcal time @ 2nd & SS. I wouldn't do that either. With the $$ Furcal will be making next year he better be a full-time SS, otherwise he'll be grossly overpaid.
  15. It's not over. The Mets could easily outbid Hendry. If we do get Furcal I hope Cedeno is traded. Putting him at 2B alongside Furcal would be stupid. At 2B Cedeno's value is greatly diminished because 2B has higher offensive expectations and is a much easier position to fill. He could help the team more as trade bait.
  16. I strongly disagree. Rusch is a lefty, a veteran, has accumulated some tenure with Dusty and the Cubs, makes $3M per year, and is signed for 2 years. Dusty also has a history of being very tolerant of bad spring performances from his favorite veterans. Dusty will not have this be an even competition for the 5 slot. Williams will have to outplay Rusch by a wide margin to get the job.
  17. No, the rotation is not set. Rusch isn't assured of a rotation spot. The only real shoe-ins are Z, Prior, Wood (if healthy), and most likely Maddux. One spot, maybe more, is open. Naw, given the current personnel, it's pretty much set, assuming everyone stays healthy through spring. Rusch would have to be really horrible in spring not to get the 5 spot. But, if Hendry gets another top-shelf starter then things get interesting.
  18. The MLB leak about the "hard" nature of Palmeiro's roids made Raffy's lies look ridiculous. Maybe Lawton knows that if he tells lies about accidental ingestion in vitamins another leak will conveniently surface and expose the ugly specifics of what he actually took. I think the details of positiive tests should automatically be made public, but since that is contrary to current policy MLB will have to rely on leakers to prevent players from fabricating excuses.
  19. I want another bona fide stud SP. We already have enough 4 and 5 types. Wood is a good bet to break down midseason and Prior is a question mark, so if it were up to me I'd invest some big bucks in an SP now. Kerry must be replaced after 2006 anyway, so why not do it now? The money is there, if it isn't wasted on Furcal.
  20. I'd love to have Sheffield's production in RF. He has good power and a career .399 OBP. If he's available Hendry has to investigate.
  21. I never liked the move in the first place. yeah i miss jody gerut too :( I actually thought Gerut would have been a decent gamble for 2006, because his knees should be OK then. Unfortunately we needed someone who could help in 2005, and Gerut wasn't it.
  22. Isn't Dusty supposed to attract players we wouldn't get otherwise? Let's have Dusty call up Sheffield and see what happens. The worst that could happen is Dusty fails and looks stupid, but we're already used to that. Maybe Dusty really could charm Sheffield into at least considering the Cubs. There's nothing to lose by trying.
  23. Cost-cutting in RF doesn't make sense. If anything, that's the one place where we might consider overpaying.
  24. Getting the starting job won't be as hard as keeping it. I'd like to think Dusty will allow Matt to play through some slumps, but I'm skeptical.
  25. I'm hoping the Mets make a ridiculous offer and Hendry looks elsewhere.
