  1. I've heard the term "self-sealing" applied to fuel tanks used in military aircraft and vehicles. They date back to WW2. I'm not exactly sure how they worked, but I know bullets could actually enter the fuel tank and an inner bladder could still prevent a leak if the hole wasn't too big. Maintenance crews would actually fish machine gun slugs out of the bottom of the tanks. I imagine this technology is still in use, but modernized of course.
  2. What if Nomar gets an incentive-laden contract, with the incentives based on playing time of course, and he gets injured badly enough that he sucks but can still play? I could totally see that happening. We could be stuck with a truly crappy defensive SS in that case.
  3. That's well and good, but is the rumor true that actors Tom Cruise and pregnant fiancee Katie Holmes will reserve the entire Ritz-Carlton hotel in Cancun, Mexico, for their whispered-about shotgun wedding at the end of November? Can Bruce confirm this?
  4. Not true. Sneed knows that John Malkovich dined with actress Dana Delaney at Tavern on Rush Thursday. Scandalous! Yes, a true Tale of Ribaldry.
  5. If you think that's juicy, get a load of this: More sightings of the rumored celluloid coo couple, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. The duo dined at Gibson's Thursday night, sipped after-dinner drinks at Tavern on Rush and capped the night off at Bella Lounge. Sure sounds like the pair, who claim to be "just friends," are doing a good job getting spotted together all over town. http://www.suntimes.com/output/sneed/cst-nws-sneed16.html
  6. Not true. Sneed knows that John Malkovich dined with actress Dana Delaney at Tavern on Rush Thursday.
  7. I am not familiar with Sneed's column, so I went through and read some back issues, and there are numerous reports of sightings of celebrities in various establishments, so it is entirely possible that a waiter overheard something. No doubt a gossip writer would have sources in various swanky restaurants/clubs/bars.
  8. I can envision a few scenarios. If a waiter in a fancy restaurant that is frequented by celebrities overhears something he might call a gossip columnist before a sportswriter. Maybe somebody overheard something at a party? Who knows?
  9. A gossip column is a funny place to get baseball news, but what the heck, here it is. http://www.suntimes.com/output/sneed/cst-nws-sneed01.html
  10. LH pitching is generally overvalued, sometimes WAY overvalued. Sorry, Jerome.
  11. Looks like a rotation spot is Rusch's to lose, assuming Dusty and Hendry are of the same mind. Even if Rusch is terrible in the spring I'm sure he'll open the season as a starter, since Dusty is extraordinarily forgiving of bad spring play by veterans. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20051031&content_id=1262673&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  12. If you're talking individual players, it has to be TJ, although the D is pretty damn good too. Lovie's "no fat guys" philosophy on D has worked much better than I thought it would. Everyone is quick and they swarm to the ball and they don't wear down.
  13. I doubt we'll get anything very good for Corey. I'm sure a major reason he is attracting interest is because he's a blue light special.
  14. I don't understand the fascination with Furcal. Regardless of Dusty's horsecrap about off-line throws, Cedeno is an excellent defender, as is Furcal, so if we pay Furcal $8M over and above the league minimum we are predominantly paying that amount for Furcal's bat. There is no way Furcal's bat is worth $8M. I'll take Cedeno at the league minimum.
  15. I'm sure I could find more examples of my own bitching, but here is one I just dug up: viewtopic.php?t=18057&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=hollandsworth+burnitz&start=60
  16. Iirc the general consensus was that the OF was a little weak, but the infield was quite strong. Lots depended on Nomar and Patterson. Unfortunately, both failed big time. No. Use the search button and you'll find lots of complaining about the outfield in the spring. I myself thought it totally sucked. The LF platoon was almost universally condemned. Whenever you have a straight L/R platoon the left-handed hitter is essentially the starter, and nobody but ZZthorn thought Hollandsworth was a legit everyday LF. Backing up glass-bodied Nomar with Neifi was also widely condemned, and many pointed out that Neifi would bat at the top of the order.
  17. So you don't want to see Williams and Hill traded for hitting?? Don't get your hopes up w/ this free agent market. That's all well and good if you trade one or two of them (for a good hitter), but look for a better starter than Rusch in the free agent market then. My preferences would have been: A)Get Rich Hill some starts in late 2005 to evaluate his potential as an SP for 2006. if Hill was subsequently judged to be an unfit SP: B)Spend a bit more than what Rusch was offered, in order to get someone actually good. Instead Hendry took the well-traveled path of mediocrity.
  18. which sucks, because burnitz would be an awesome 4th OF. but with dusty managing, he wouldn't be that far down on the depth chart. A Burnitz/Murton platoon would almost certainly mean Burnitz getting at least half the starts, and probably more like 2/3 of them if Murton has any type of slump. We just have to hope someone promises Burnitz a starting job.
  19. I'm not real worried about Burnitz just yet. I'm betting he wants a starting job and Hendry is probably not interested in giving him one. If he can't find a starting gig the threat of a Burnitz/Murton platoon in LF rears its head. Burnitz swings left-handeed and Dusty adores him, so he'd get quite a few starts.
  20. It's a Bruce Levine scoop. Take it for what it's worth. I'm inclined to believe it because it was already known the Cubs were working on a deal with Rusch.
  21. Just heard on the radio the report came from Bruce Levine. He says the Cubs will be announcing that a deal is done and just needs a signature, which it will get next week.
  22. I really would have liked to have gotten a look at Rich Hill as a potential SP for 2006. Unfortunately it seems the organization was always dead set on bringing Rusch back.
  23. I don't know if a contender should have Rusch in the rotation for any significant amount of time. If it were up to me I'd spend a bit more and get someone who is actually good.
  24. Just heard this on the Score. Pretty disappointing if you ask me.
  25. I don't care how rosy the reports are, I'd still lay 3 to 1 odds that Kerry finishes 2006 in the bullpen. We need another SP.
