  1. Guess who's to blame for the smallness of the sample size. Hendry should have Murton should start next year just to prevent Dusty from profiting by his misdeeds. If Murton doesn't start based on sample size then Dusty will know what he's gotten away with and it'll encourage him to keep pulling his usual tricks with other rookies.
  2. We can't have any LH-batting veteran outfielders on the bench next year. It would be too tempting for Dusty to give the LH vet lots of AB's vs. RH pitching anytime Murton slumps. Greenberg would be less threatening.
  3. 121 pitches for Z. We have a 40 man roster and we aren't going to the playoffs. I can't see any circumstance under which our stud SP's should throw more than 100 pitches.
  4. In a perfectly literal sense of the word "valuable", Lee can be said to have had his value reduced by having Perez and Patterson bat in front of him so much. He literally would have been more valuable to his team if his manager had put better batters in front of him. If I were voting I'd be inclined to spot Lee some handicap points for his manager.
  5. Sorry! I used to have a kid that did this. Once he got going no one could touch him but that first inning was one tough hombre. Never did fix the problem. If Captain Picard were managing he would have the kid pitch the first inning, then the kid would be informed he had actually been in a simulated game on the holodeck of the Enterprise, having been beamed up while sleeping. The kid would then be beamed down to the surface to pitch the actual first inning of the actual game. Problem solved.
  6. I agree, but ultimately if we are discussing the owners' willingness to spend or the team's wisdom in spending then the payroll size is the only relevant figure. $100M was spent on players, period. Whether we kept Sosa or paid off part of his contract and shipped him to another team is irrelevant. The Cubs made a huge financial committment to Sosa and enjoyed/suffered the consequences.
  7. Yeah, if they really cared about winning they would've kept Sosa! That way they could've had an even greater sinkhole in the OF and had a 100 million dollar payroll. Then they'd care about winning to you, and that's all that matters. Good point. People who say paying off bad contracts shouldn't count on payrolls should consider the alternative.
  8. Ponson went on the DL in August with a strained calf. I don't see how an injury like that could heal very fast when a player is carrying 40 lbs. of excess fat.
  9. Fatness didn't help Sidney Ponson, but that guy also needed a brain transplant.
  10. BP now has us at 0.15629% for the wild card. That makes us a 640 to 1 underdog. Place your bets.
  11. If Williams comes back make it clear to him that Hill, Pinto, etc. will take his job if he doesn't perform. My impression is that Williams needs to feel the competition breathing down his neck.
  12. He does remind me of Quervo(sp)...Z's buddy that the Cubs traded. Quevedo, yeah you could tell he was destined to fight the battle of the bulge for the rest of his life. Z used to be a bit chunky but I never worried about him because he's such a baseball fanatic and I knew he wouldn't let himself get too fat. Williams has the exact opposite temperament. When a laid back guy gets fat I worry about him.
  13. I can see Williams developing a serious weight problem as he ages. He's only 23 and he's already chubby. My inclination is to trade him while his value is high. If we keep him I definitely wouldn't give him a multiyear contract. If he gets a 3 year deal he could blow up like a balloon.
  14. Hendry is a fool if he doesn't pick up Burnie's $7M option. Furcal is worth $7.5M more per year than Cedeno. Neifi just turned 32 in June, so he is just now entering his prime years(32-36). Give him a 4 year contract to lock in all his peak production.
  15. Dusty has a history of spouting insincere self-serving bullcrap, but this stuff about Murton is probably the worst yet. I love this one: "He opened my eyes from the beginning." Hey Dusty, if Murton opened your eyes right from the beginning then why was he glued to the bench until just one week ago?
  16. Good game, but Weathers had a valid beef on the Walker AB. I was shocked when that one highish ball down the middle wasn't called for strike 3.
  17. It's pretty pathetic that Murton - to get regular playing time - had to blow the competition completely out of the water, to the point where it became embarrassing not to play him.
  18. Who kidnapped Dusty? Today's lineup actually makes sense.
  19. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm on board with you. I don't have stats to support my theory (too darn lazy), but I think it is much more likely for a hitter with good plate discipline to develop better power than for a good power hitter to develop better plate discipline. Maybe he'll be one of those guys like Sosa, Bonds, et al. who gained 40-50 lbs. and turned into monster power hitters.
  20. Dusty bends over backwards to "reward" Neifi with playing time at the expense of Cedeno, now Neifi says he'll leave unless he starts next year. What a tool. It's great to have a manager who's more loyal to scumbag veterans than he is to the Chicago Cubs.
  21. Baseball Prospectus has our playoff chance at 1.36622% now .
  22. That's how I see it too. Dusty can shower Cedeno with compliments now that he can't play: "Gee, Cedeno's great, and I'd love to play him, but unfortunately he's injured. Darn the luck!". Murton won't get as many compliments because he has committed the sin of staying healthy.
  23. Neifi in a 3-22 slump after tonight's game, but still batting 2nd, in front of Lee.
  24. It doesn't bother me that Macias is playing over Burnitz. Burnitz is a mediocrity who probably won't be back next year and I don't care if he doesn't play another inning with the Cubs. I'm just glad Murton gets back-to-back starts.
  25. I agree, this is Neifi's career year, same as 2004 for Tony Womack. The Cards realized this and let Womack go, but the Cubs would've kept Womack for 2005, and they will keep Neifi for 2006. I am looking forward to seeing Neifi revert to a .600 OPS next year in a Cubs uniform.
