    What we and Cubs management want should be the same thing, and I have to believe it is: to field a World Series champion. Certainly, it's the goal of MacPhail, Hendry, Baker and the 25 players on the field. But as been noted by other posters, their efforts to field that champion aren't the best. As for the 3 million+ fans, of course they were pleased with that! Who wouldn't be?! However, I don't think there's a conspiracy that as long as the crowds come, the team won't spend. It isn't the amount of money poured into a team, it's how they use it.

    There are more costs involved in producing a baseball game than just saying "okay." The biggest would be having Bob and Len agree to call the game since they probably have a set number of pre-season games as part of their contract. Then there are the costs for cameramen, etc. (although I'm not sure if the Cubs pay those salaries or the network that is using the cameramen). And, it's not like the Cubs need to sell their product the way the Sox do (even though they won a championship, the Cubs are still more popular). Although as a fan I want to see more spring training games, I understand why they didn't want to.

    I don't know much but I think the Cubs are not that profitable from a coprorate perspective. I think I read something to the extent that they saw a profit of 4 million dollars in 2003. That is not big money. Most of the owners own teams not to make money but as a vanity project. I think the era of corporate baseball will end soon. They just don't make enough money. I seem to remember a controversy over that amount not too long ago. It had something to do with Tribune hiding various profits from different revenue streams associated with the team (TV, radio, scalping, er, I mean ticket brokering). I can't believe that the Cubs only made 4 million.

    But if the Trib sells the Cubs, it loses one of its biggest profit centers., not only from the team and its revenue but all broadcast and print coverage the team generates and supplies to WGN/Chicago Tribune/CLTV. As much as I would like the Trib to sell the Cubs to someone like a Mark Cuban, I just can't imagine it happening.

    I agree wholeheartedly. Unless we started offering up Zambrano, Ramirez and Lee, we don't have tradeable everyday players/pitchers. It seems, especially this year, that the only trades that involved prospects were to teams that are in rebuilding modes.

    And that was the only home run Doug Strange hit in his two years with the Cubs. I remember a game where Harry was barely paying attention and Andre Dawson lines one into right field. You then hear Harry screaming, "There's a man . . . running the bases." There definitely was a difference pre- and post-stroke.

    Out of curiosity, what makes you think that Aramis will opt out? I know that its his right in the contract, but I thought he was generally happy in Chicago. And, it's not like the market for injury-prone 3B is huge. I realize that Aramis has tremendous talent, but with his legs, who would be willing to take that big a risk on him?

    No offense to your opinion, but I'm tired of people saying that the only reason the Cubs won the division was because the Astros/Cardinals lost. We won because we had solid pitching and a decent offense. August and September, the Cubs stepped up their game and realized that they controlled their own destiny. You look at things like Prior's performance after coming back from the Giles injury; Kenny Lofton seemingly on base all the time; the five-game series with the Cardinals. The Cubs played about as good a game of baseball as could have been possible. Again, no disrepect to your opinion, but they might not have won 90+ games and clinched the division earlier, but they played dominant baseball to win in 2003. . . . then choked in the NLCS.

    I also disagree because if we take your line of reasoning outward, no professional organization would want to have spring training in Arizona. Given that the alternative is Florida -shudder-, I think AZ is as good a place as any!

    I think the lesson the Cub outfielders need to learn from this is to not fall out of favor with management/fans. We'll send you to Baltimore. Maybe Corey can have Sammy's old locker.

    I'm not so sure of that. Wasn't one of the big reasons Dusty didn't receive an extension in SF because he didn't get along with Sabean. It seems to be his mode of operation to cause a rift between himself and the GM so he can leave "adhering to his principles."

    I think Paul Sullivan is beyond rehabilitation. Yeah, I think he meant Williamson. Yeah, I figured as much, but couldn't help getting a dig in at Sullivan.

    Exactly. Somethings got to give. They are supposedly holding out for Z in our offer, but this deal is based on mostly prospects? hmm. Maybe they're just angry with us because of how the Sosa deal worked out for them. :)

    This doesn't make sense. The top two things I see are that the O's said they didn't want to trade Tejada within the division. And, the D-Rays would be getting an over-priced (especially by their standards) under-performing Matsui. That's something the D-Rays haven't been too keen on in the past. The only team that really benefits from this trade is the Mets. Of course, considering the source of this rumor, that doesn't surprise me.

    That's most sports writers though. It's that whole "standing by your story" journalism. If you think about it, has there been any sports writer (Internet, radio, newspapers, etc.) that we would say was right on the money at least 80 percent of the time?
