What we and Cubs management want should be the same thing, and I have to believe it is: to field a World Series champion. Certainly, it's the goal of MacPhail, Hendry, Baker and the 25 players on the field. But as been noted by other posters, their efforts to field that champion aren't the best. As for the 3 million+ fans, of course they were pleased with that! Who wouldn't be?! However, I don't think there's a conspiracy that as long as the crowds come, the team won't spend. It isn't the amount of money poured into a team, it's how they use it.
