  1. Also, can you imagine Manny and A-Ram hanging out? They could place bets on who would take longer to run out a groundout.
  2. As much as I like Steve Stone, I think we're seeing why no one has taken a chance on him in a front office position. He's WAY too outspoken, and if you don't agree with him, he'll go straight to the press and play the victim. Not that I'm doubting anything he's said, but between this article and his situation with the Cubs last year, he doesn't seem to know how to stop talking.
  3. I don't know about that. Sammy wasn't treated very well by the players on his own team. I think that speaks volumes about the type of person he was. I Maybe Ramirez doesn't want to play in any high pressure cities. Arizona and Cleveland certainly fit the bill, and pratically no one in Anaheim cares about baseball. That would fit in with his very laid back attitude towards the game. Why do you say that no one in Anaheim cares about baseball? They have some of the best attendance in all of baseball. I'm sorry, I should rephrase. Their expectations aren't anywhere near as high as somewhere like NY, Boston or Chicago. I didn't mean to impugn Angels fans.

  5. I used to live in the same building as Corey Patterson, Matt Clement, Dusty Baker, Michael Barrett and Latroy Hawkins. Clement loved talking with the doorman. Corey actually helped me move in (okay, he pushed the elevator button while my hands were full. . . but I was moving in at the time!)
  6. For the record, the Yankees have received permission from the Braves to talk with Mazzone about the pitching coach job. #-o Why didn't Hendry think of this?
  7. So he'll play for the Braves is what you're saying. :D
  8. I'm not saying that those were the best decisions. But if you look further at my argument, Cashman's hands are tied by the Boss', fans' and the media's overwhelming urge to win now and win every year. What's the easiest way to do that? Sign every high profile free agent around. Also, the Yankees WILL spend top dollar every year for their free agents. Every single one of their players are overpriced. But that's the way they've set up their operation. There's no going back now for them. And as goony mentioned, the Yankees can afford to trade for a large contract like Brown because cost isn't a factor. I can't remember, but at the time of the Brown trade, I believe he was having a very good year. Same goes for Johnson. He was too costly for AZ, so they trade him to the Yankees. So in essence, I'm not advocating for Cashman as GM of the Year. But, I would like to see what he would do with another team before calling him the worst GM ever. I don't think it's a fair assessment.
  9. Understood, and I'm not making apologies for the guy. I'm just saying that Cashman is the worst GM out there. Given the proper circumstances, he may be a good GM. I think a lot of that comes from the heightened expectations of the Yankees. They are expected to win the WS EVERY YEAR. That's going to put pressure on a guy, and yes, he will throw money at a solution because he can. He doesn't have the luxury of, say, the Indians who told their fans, "We're going into a rebuilding process and will be ready to compete again in a couple of years." The Yankees as an organization are just so skewed from what the rest of baseball deals with (save Boston), that it's unfair to say he's a bad GM. He's doing the best he can in a very surreal environment.
  10. Come on, he seriously can't be the WORST. He's consistently handcuffed by Steinbrenner. And lest we forget the travesty that was Chuck Lamar?
  11. Great. Now I have to hear it from all my Sox friends. Here's hoping for a quick ouster in the first round. NOTE: This isn't me being petty because the Cubs didn't make it this year. I just hate White Sox fans who rub it in. (Of course I do the same when the Cubs win. . . make that, if the Cubs win ;) )
  12. I think Murton, Hill and Mitre might do it. Unless Billy has had his fill of pitchers, then it might be something like Murton, Sing and Hill, possibly with Fontenot thrown in somewhere. I wouldn't want to see that move, but if they went out and traded or signed for impact OF bats, I wouldn't object too much. Given our outfield situation, there's no way I'm letting go of Murton now. As much as I would love to have Zito fill out our rotation, isn't there someone else we could send along?
  13. Well, if the Red Sox are foolish enough to deal one of the most potent offensive players in all of baseball, who's to say what the Marlins would do? :D
  14. So, to try to read between the lines, are you saying the majority of the blame for this season falls on Hendry, rather than Baker? It's a total team effort: Players, GM, manager, in whatever order you'd like. Bruce-- At what point does the blame fall at MacPhail's feet? He's been at the helm for a decade and there hasn't been any noticeable improvement in the team structure. We've had a parade of GMs, managers and players, but the one constant has been MacPhail. Is he merely the Cubs representative on the Trib Board or does he have any impact on the direction of the club?
  15. I seem to remember reading (some New York rag) that Minaya was so pleased with Floyd's performance during their run at the wild card that he wouldn't think of trading him this off-season. So it may take a LOT to grab him from the Mets. If they're after Manny, can see Floyd being dealt and the Cubs getting in there as a 3rd team. Mets will go after Delgado before Manny IMO. Or perhaps a multi-team trade like Red Sox get Delgado, Marlins get prospects from RedSox/Mets/Cubs, Mets get Manny, Cubs get Floyd. Heck, let's drag the Marlins in on this, what do we have to do for Cabrera (given that the Marlins are tiring of his less than stellar antics). Would you deal Zambrano for Cabrera?

  17. What's the over-under on Dusty's next idiot quote? :D
  18. Yeah, fire Baker. Well, yes and no. Hendry should have realized that he was pinning his hopes on a starting rotation that has never worked together for more than two or three full rotations. Hendry should have realized that his offense and bullpen were one or two key injuries away from being completely inept. Hendry should have realized that his bench had all the pop of an empty Coke bottle. Even firing Baker wouldn't have changed all that.
  19. Hendry was also preoccupied with getting rid of Sosa last off-season and that made his job even harder. Not only did he not have the necessary money going into the off-season, but all the quality free agents were gone by the time he did. Also, I don't think that it's the Trib that's scared of making commitments of more than 3 years, it's Hendry/MacPhail. They saw the glut of 7-8 year deals that went down in the 90s and now teams are hampered by high-cost, low-impact players.
  20. Also on the point about minor-league outfielders making an impact in the bigs. . . the Cubs have had one. His name is Matt Murton. Who was it that didn't play him on a regular basis even though he had success? It certainly wasn't Hendry. And Lawton was a good pick-up at the time. He had a solid OBP and was leadoff material. It didn't work out. Of course, he also hasn't worked out for the Yankees. Hendry should be blamed for lack of foresight. Instead of hoping everything came together, he should have had a back-up plan in place.
  21. And the answer is YES. He would have the fewest RBIs. Albert Belle is next in line with 126 RBI.
  22. A complete White Sox collapse?
  23. I'm not so sure that I would want Torre. Yes, he has had TREMENDOUS success in New York. But his managing of the Yankees bullpen in the past couple of years hasn't been very good. He wore down Gordon and Sturtze going into September since those two were the only reliable arms he had. I'm not sure I'd like to see what he does with the Cubs bullpen. That said, he would definitely bring an air of professionalism to the organization and a thick skin to deal with the media, unlike a certain Cubs manager who shall remain nameless.
  24. Would anyone consider Hunter a good stop-gap until Pie is ready in 2007? He only has one year left on his contract, so it isn't like he necessarily be in our long-term plans. I'd take Hunter over another year of Patterson, that's for sure. And, with this year's free agent class, it isn't like there are that many quality outfielders available to us.
