  1. Torii Hunter on the block? The Minneapolis Star Tribune says that it may be a possibility due to his $10.75 million salary next year. http://www.startribune.com/stories/509/5617772.html I think this would be a great opportunity for Hendry to make some noise in the winter! Maybe a package of Walker, Mitre/Welly/Hill and Corey would get the deal done. The Twins are looking for cheap hitting, and Walker fits their need at 2B, and maybe Corey can pull it together with a change of scenery. This would necessitate a Furcal signing with Cedeno moving to 2B, of course. Thoughts? Concerns?
  2. What about Dopriak? How has his year been? Is he still considered a top prospect in the Cubs system?
  3. No, he's not in baseball anymore due to his back problems (which allegedly led to his DUI). Randy Hundley was on with Pat & Ron a couple of days ago and Randy was talking about how bad Todd's back problems were and how doctors are still unsure how to treat it. I may never have liked him as a player, but you have to feel bad for a guy with chronic back problems. That isn't easy.
  4. Okay, does anyone think that the Pirates will EVER do any more trading with the Cubs? I mean, this is comical. Hendry: "No, Hill and Bruback and PERFECT for your team. We'll just take Aramis (who probably won't amount to much) and Kenny Lofton (who's old any way)." Littlefield: "Yeah, that sounds okay. Let's do it." Fast forward two years later. . . Hendry: "Yeah, about that previous trade. . . I had no idea that it wouldn't work out for you. I'm TOTALLY sorry about that. But, hey, let me make it up to you. How about we give you Gerut for, oh. . . I don't know, maybe Lawton." Littlefield: "I don't know Jim. This may backfire on me again. Doesn't Gerut have knee problems?" Hendry: "Come on Warren. We just traded for the guy using our left fielder of the future! In fact, I think you'll be getting the better end of this deal seeing as how we already traded for him." Littlefield: "All right Jim, just this one time. But I'm going to be upset if something happens. . ." Hendry: "Warren, I love you like a brother. Why would I go out and hurt you like that?"
  5. Your argument is hurt by the fact that the Yankees won 4 WS in 5 years using the philosophy your describe. If that philosophy netted the Cubs just 1 title, I'd be for it. That isn't exactly true. The core of those Yankees teams was built from their farm system: Pettitte, Jeter, Rivera, Posada, Williams, etc. Sure, they had the high-profile signings like a Clemens or an O'Neill, but the core of those teams came from their farm system. EDIT: yeah, what Tim said.
  6. Well, let's look at the Yankees system. They traded away most of their minor league talent for higher-priced stars, leaving them with a $200 million budget and no exceptional talent pool to draw from. And as we can see, $200 million does not guarantee a WS. For the Cubs to trade away the majority of their farm only to buy them back in free agency leaves the team at a financial disadvantage and potentially gets back guys who have already hit or passed their prime. The Cubs are doing a good job of trading prospects for quality players. Especially in this market, I'd be more apt to continue their SOP than to sell the farm.
  7. Maddux said in an interview on NBC that he wanted the controversey closed, that he will not be retiring at the end of the year. I think that article was more Sullivan stirring the pot rather than reporting the news (per usual). Even in that article Maddux says, "Let's just shut it down right now," he said. "I've said what I feel and I've been totally honest. Let's just worry about it and play baseball. Please. I'd love to play for another 10 years, but this is something that is not an issue right now." I don't think Greg though that the reporters would really take him seriously that he would consider retiring at the end of the year. I believe he was talking about it more in the hypothetical "How much more do I have left in the tank" sense. Totally blown out of proportion in my opinion.
  8. I read that article and am kinda confused as to who he thinks the team leader is. Does he think that it's himself? I can't think of anyone else on that team that the other team would "fear."
  9. Hypocrisy, Joe Morgan is thy name. He doesn't want to cast a blanket statement that may be misinterpreted by today's stars, but then he says this about this generation's HOF aspirations: "I have reservations, not only about Rafael Palmeiro but a lot of the guys who are going to come in with numbers obtained during this era. I think there just has to be a penalty -- I just don't know what that is yet." http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cs-0508040210aug04,1,358638.story?coll=cs-baseball-print What a jerk.
  10. That is one of the most disturbing statements I have ever heard? Peter Gammons groupies? I think I threw up in my mouth. We all know John Kruk is where it's at.
  11. 9/10 and I only guessed on the one I didn't know. . . I need a life outside of the Cubs.
  12. To play devil's advocate, how many rings do the Yankees have since George began openly meddling with the team by advocating for veterans and trading away top prospects?
  13. More Morgan wisdom from this morning's ESPN chat:  There are no words.
  14. I've been hoping to hear words like this for YEARS! Given what Cuban has done to make the Mavericks one of the bigger forces in the NBA, I would love to see what he would be able to do in Chicago. I agree that he would be the next Steinbrenner. And honestly, I think that is what this team needs after years of a Tribune board not putting any visible passion into the team. We need an owner that is as passionate as the fans about winning. I'd speculate that if Cuban were our owner last year, we'd be seeing Carlos Beltran in a Cubs uniform.
  15. I think if it was the Cards and Sox, I would pray for a rainout. . . all seven games. Then I'd hope for the New Madrid fault (which runs through St. Louis and can be felt in Chicago) to cause an earthquake that demolishes the Cell and Busch. Then I would pray that Selig calls the Series on account of "Acts of God." That way I don't have to root for either.
  16. you know the beautiful thing about all these lineups? Neifi is nowhere to be seen. Ahh, how sweet life can be!
  17. The Fetters impersonation is correct. He also did give up a home run to a rookie pitcher for the Dodgers. How must that feel? Knowing that your first (and possibly only home run) came against a aged first baseman who was just having some fun on the mound.
  18. This will also be the first All-Star game with the two Cubs corners infielders starting. (1969 doesn't count because Banks didn't start).
  19. I think in Giambi's case (and most major leaguers with 5+ years) he would have had to pass through waivers and there is NO WAY anyone would have picked him up given the size of his contract.
  20. He liked it in Chicago in 2003. That's when everything was going his way. The minute the wheels started to fall off the cart, he quickly became uphappy. And I think, to your point, that it has to do with being thin-skinned. Was this a problem in San Fran in 1995-96 when the Giants had losing records? I'm not sure, but maybe someone with better knowledge than I could answer that question.
  21. Maybe Mike is the pitching coach that Mike Maddux is. . . It's Bizarro Baseball!
  22. I think he's been forced to play the younger pitchers because he had no choice. It wasn't like Hendry signed veteran pitchers who could step into the roles Wood, Prior, etc. have. Even in relief, Hendry didn't go out and sign veterans that had the opportunity to supplant our younger players. However, Hendry had signed Hollandsworth, et. al giving Dusty the opportunity to play the veterans who "know how to get it done." And we see what that led us.
  23. Ooo, that's right. Hmm, maybe we can disguise Barrett so Felipe doesn't realize it's him?
  24. And don't get me started on Mike Murphy. The man sounds like he's having a heart attack every time he talks. Sports radio generally in Chicago is really bad.
  25. I would say, if you think keeping Dusty Baker is the answer, you're twice as delusional. Replacing Dusty is one of many answers. He's the wrong manager for the wrong team. I said it before he was hired and I haven't seen anything resembling evidence to the contrary. I agree wholeheartedly. Is there any way we can trade managers with San Fran? Dusty will have the veteran team he longs for and Felipe can have a team worth managing (oh, and if they want to throw Moises in because he wants to finish his career with Daddy, I'd be cool with that.)
