  1. Is there anyone on the radio in Chicago that likes the Cubs? It really is a very short list. Kaplan, and one or two guys on MVP. The score sure seems to have it in for the Cubs, even before they got the Sox contract. I think a lot of that is other radio station's trying to capitalize on Sox fans. Everyone knows that WGN is home to the Cubs, and doesn't really dwell on the Sox. So play up to that audience and hope that they agree with the mentality. I know that I'll usually listen to Sports Central before tuning to either WMVP or the Score. Is it my Cubs bias, probably. But I don't want to listen to people who bash my team.
  2. Upping the offer 2.5 million is not a "mere pittance." Fact is, Furcal wanted the cash. Atlanta would have given him stability, the Cubs would have given him security (years + cash), but he got greedy. Good riddance I say. (Of course, here's hoping Juan Pierre works out  ).
  3. Rotoworld is reporting that the Blue Jays and Rangers are in talks to trade Wilkerson for Orlando Hudson to fill Texas' hole at 2nd. With Hendry's love of Mench and our love of Wilkerson, how about Jim talks about a Walker/Patterson for Wilkerson/Mench swap?
  4. Maybe this is a precursor to a Orlando Cabrera/Manny Ramirez trade with Anaheim. . .
  5. Not only that, but with Baker and Rothchild saying that they can't count on Wood to be ready for the season opener nor for an entire season, why would any time give us value for that? Personally, I think it's the spin job that the Cubs have been giving players they don't intend on re-signing, but are fan favorites. Bad mouth their ability well before struggling to find a replacement.
  6. But we know that Baker would never do that. I want Murton in LF until he proves that he can't do it. If Floyd can't play right field, then we should look elsewhere. As someone else said, the Mets did us no favors with the Sosa situation last year. I see no reason why we should help them out with the Manny trade unless if significantly helps us.
  7. Ken Rosenthal was asked about this same rumor on the Baseball Prospectus radio show and said that he hadn't heard anything about this rumor either. Personally, I like to think that it was all NSBB. :D
  8. So basically we should be prepared for an hour's worth of "What are the Red Sox & Yankees going to do next?" I wish there was an intelligent baseball show out there. Or even something like Inside the NFL on HBO.
  9. But, Hendry has said consistently that he sees more of a market in the trade arena than in free agency, so maybe he doesn't mind blowing his Type A restrictions on 2 relievers and Furcal. Risky? You betcha!
  10. Wow. Giving up Rowand, one of two VERY good starters AND picking up 2/3 of Thome's contract? Talk about overkill. If I were Williams, I wouldn't do it. Maybe Roward and picking up half of Thome's contract, but not the deal as stated.
  11. Out of curiosity, how does one address leg problems? In Aramis' case, was it just a matter of playing on muscles that didn't fully heal? Or is there a worry of recurrence with these types of injuries. I'm no doctor (or physical trainer), so I'd like to know the mechanics of the situation if anyone can oblige.
  12. Don't you mean the majority of people who had an MVP vote? While it's hardly indicative of true fan support, ESPN did an online poll which mapped out by state who people thought was the MVP. D-Lee didn't even carry Illinois! http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?pollId=33531
  13. Are we just bidding against ourselves for Furcal? The Mets? Rumors from the Mets side have really calmed down in the past week or so. According to the New York rags, the Mets are focusing on pitching (Burnett and Wagner are the big names) and, of course, dealing with Manny talk.
  14. I don't see why. They both did pretty amazing things with their teams this year. Who would you have chosen?
  15. Furcal makes no sense for the Cards. I think he's talking about Brian Giles' little brother Marcus. And unfortunately, he makes a lot of sense for the Cards.
  16. Blanco was signed for 2 yrs and 3 mil. Maybe Hendry gave Neifi extra because he can play two positions?
  17. For whom I expect a 5 yr/$35 million contract announced any day now.
  18. Imagine Baltimore having Sosa one year and Thomas the next? Where old faded Chicago stars go to embarrass themselves. If healthy I think THomas can still be effective, chances are Sosa cannot. Has Frank been healthy in the past couple of years....I don't remember. He's had foot and ankle problems the past two years. Surgeries that didn't take, etc. My bet is that the Sox sign him for $4 million plus incentives based on plate appearances.
  19. No offense that poster, but if anything the deal should be Cameron + cash + midlevel prospect for Walker. We'd be giving away a valuable bat for a cheap salary; there's no need to give away our prospects.
  20. I think my main problem with the article is that he portrays Wrigleyville as this booze-filled place where self-control goes out the door for ballplayers. Couch started out with a accurate portrayal of Furcal as someone who knows well enough not to get into a bad situation with booze (sitting outside the locker room during a champagne celebration). But because of day games and an erratic game schedule, suddenly he's going to be hitting all the bars? He does follow it up with saying that Furcal may not do that. But I just didn't like the implication. Something about the entire article just rubbed me the wrong way. . . Maybe I just don't like Greg Couch. :)
  21. I just wanted to gage reaction to Greg Couch's most recent column in the Sun-Times about Rafael Furcal. The basic thrust of his article is "Should the Cubs sign Furcal to a big dollar contract knowing he has a drinking problem." Personally, I think the entire column is insulting. Furcal may have a drinking problem, but he is taking appropriate measures to ensure that it doesn't affect his career. Even in Couch's column, he mentions that Furcal sat in another room while the Braves had their champagne celebration for winning the division. Given the drinking problems of several of Couch's Sun-Times colleagues, I would think he would be a little more supportive and empathetic to airing that sort of dirty laundry in such a fashion. http://www.suntimes.com/output/couch/cst-spt-greg042.html
  22. And, if he goes there, nobody should be surprised. The Cards are consistent winners, have an opening in OF, and have the cash to pay him. Wasn't I just hearing that St. Louis was not going to increase their budget. If that's the case, I'm not sure they have the money to spend on Giles. Besides, with the guys they have, a guy like Jacque Jones makes much more sense. I thought they would increase their budget because of the increased revenue from their new ballpark. Unless they have already spent that money elsewhere?
  23. I'd say no for the moment. I would want to see how he's recovered from his face injury from last season to make sure he isn't gun shy about his defense in center.
  24. Not only that, but when the Astro fans started cheering at Busch, you could hear the irritating chant of "Let's Go Cardinals!" to drown out the applause. Best fans in baseball indeed.
  25. Also, can you imagine Manny and A-Ram hanging out? They could place bets on who would take longer to run out a groundout. Aramis has been playing with a bad hamstring for quite some time now. How do you want him to run out a ground out? Like Nomar? Whoa, it was a joke! Sorry my comments has been misjudged by you all day.
