  1. I like Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee's production. They are a direct result of Bobby Hill and Hee Seop Choi so I wdon't find it depressing at all. The only bothersome part would be Don Baylor's choice to keep Jason Bere in the rotation over Juan Cruz. Wow, Jason Bere. Now there's a name you shouldn't bring up in mixed company. . . or at all for that matter.
  2. I thought this was interesting on Rotoworld. A look back at the 2002 Top 100 prospects. Proving that predicting future success of prospects is such a crapshoot, Juan Cruz, Hee Sop Choi, Bobby Hill and Drew Henson were all listed higher than Zambrano (who the author felt would be more effective as a reliever than a starter). Just some food for discussion. . .
  3. You have got to be kidding me. He was probably the kid growing up that reminded the teacher to give everyone homework over Christmas break. Furthermore, he works for the Daily Southtown. I think that speaks for itself.
  4. I am in complete concurrence with you. While neither would be fun, I'd much rather have a bruised jaw than an intrascrotal hematoma. Just my two cents. I knew someone would come through with the name of the injury he suffered. While I absolutely love the punch to AJ's jaw, just putting the words scrotal and hematoma next to each other makes my nether region ache. I'll take a punch in the jaw from anyone before I'd take a batted baseball to the... We have Mike Tyson waiting for you outside
  5. I'll go on record in saying that if Neal Cotts is the World Series MVP, I will personally pay that bonus. (now watch, it'll happen and I'll be broke forever)
  6. I think Hendry included a "no givesy-backsy" clause in that trade.
  7. Hendry has said he wants a short-term CF, and that he wants a LH OF help. He's said this even after acquiring Ward. And it's been rumored by everybody that Floyd would come here, eventually. It's been assumed that Soriano is the RF, and it's safe to assume he'll play everyday, or very close. Ward is basically a LF or 1B option. You can rest assured he will get starts this year, and unless Lee misses 50 games, some of those starts will come in LF. If Floyd is here, he will get spots in LF. As far as I know, the Cubs haven't come out and said Murton will platoon with somebody in LF. But every action and every word they have spoken has indicated that Murton will share time out there. Whether it's a strict platoon, where he's get maybe 30% of the time, a 50/50 platoon where he faces some RH, or a situation where he still gets 75% of the PA, is unclear. But if Floyd is signed, you can pretty much guarantee Murton will not play LF everyday. That's the clarification I was looking for! Thanks!
  8. I'm confused and I haven't been able to find anything through this thread to quell it. Has there been any indication that the Cubs are looking to platoon Murton with anyone, let alone Floyd or Warde? Or is this just speculation? In the press release announcing Warde, Hendry explicitly said that he sees him as the first pinch-hitter off the bench. And on top of that, he's had man-love for Murton since he first traded for him. It was more Dusty that reduced his role than anything. If I'm off-base and have missed some reports I'd like to know. But if this is just speculation, then speculate away. . .
  9. If I were a betting man I'd say that he becomes the next GM if Hendry gets canned. The organization seems to like his player development and selections. And in all honesty, they could do a lot worse.
  10. People are wasting their time talking about this shortstop thing and Giles. The Cubs, whether you like it or not, are happy with Izturis and are not looking for a shortstop. They signed DeRosa for three years to be their second baseman. They are not going to sign Giles. I definitely don't like it even though what you are saying is true. It just goes to show you with all the money spent on this team we will be lucky to make the playoffs. isnt it ridiculous how much medicrity costs these days- a quarter of a billion for a third place team- Payroll jumping to 250 million!! Now we're really talking. Unfortunately, that was the result of Hendry giving Izturis a $130 million/10 year contract.
  11. Boras has absolutely no leverage in this deal, and I hope the Red Sox hold out. As long as the Red Sox are offering a decent deal I don't have any problem with them telling Matz to go back to Japan and wait 'til next year. There's no way Matz should be getting $100 million when he was only making $4.5 million last year, and the Red Sox have already forked out $51 million just to talk to the guy. The posting system has a lot of flaws, but Boras is the biggest problem in this scenario. This is a side tangent that really is beginning to bug me. When did everyone in baseball start getting called by partial names? D-Lee A-Ram, A-Rod, I-Rod, K-Rod, D-Mat. . . is it so hard to say a person's full or even just last name?
  12. I seem to remember that Hunter put the Cubs on his list of no-trade teams. This topic came up at the trading deadline last year. Additionally, the Dodgers have a logjam of OF players. I don't think they'd want to add to it.
  13. I think finding the Red Sox didn't "negotiate in good faith" would be hard to prove. Boras has a history of wanting outrageous sums for his clients and the Red Sox have already ponied up $51 million to negotiate. If the reports of offering $8 million for five years are true, the total impact on the Red Sox budget could be amortized at $12 per year. Financially, that seems like negotiating in good faith to me. They bid on an unknown product in the MLB and shouldn't be expected to shell out $16-$18 million per year above the posting fee simply because some agent says so.
  14. Ken Rosenthal mentioned a little blurb in his latest column:
  15. I think these guys do this sort of thing all the time. I do it my profession as well. Yeah, I think it's kind of common. Wasn't Prior or Wood working with a Rangers employee at one point? It's like a professional courtesy, which happens in all businesses. Yeah but the Rangers aren't likely to see Prior & Wood have much of an impact on their season, unless it's the WS (unlikely). We're talking within the division here. Well, to play devil's advocate then, wouldn't it be to our benefit if Rothchild got an in-depth look at Marquis' mechanics? Just because you pick up on a flaw doesn't mean there aren't others you could exploit as a pitching coach. This would have been a great way to learn how he tips his pitches.
  16. I know it is, but being a GM involves taking calls at all hours, negotiating million dollar deals all day long and balancing a bunch of issues at once. It's highly stressful under normal conditions, and even more so when your job is on the line. My dad had the procedure done 20 years ago when it was new. He's about to celebrate his 91 st birthday. I think Hendry will be fine. 8-) My uncle pretty much the same thing. It is amazing what they can do these days. Glad Jim has insurance ;) What insurance? http://www.uptownchamber.com/newsimages/aflac.jpg They give you cash, which is just as good as money. And if you get hurt and miss work, it won't hurt to miss work.
  17. Maybe he forgot that he traded Freddy Garcia and thinks he still has set rotation?
  18. Wasn't there a report earlier in the off-season that Rothchild was able to detect a flaw in Marquis delivery that was causing so many problems for him last season? I'm not saying that it's the world's best signing, but if Rothchild was able to turn it around for Marquis, wouldn't it be worth a shot?
  19. I agree. Not that getting paid $45 million is a bad way to spend four years, but if you're a competitor, why on earth would you go where playoff hopes go to die?
  20. Today's Tribune had an article about Larussa actively pursuing Bonds at the winter meetings. Gotta say this about Tony, he just doesn't care if steroids are involved with his players so long as they can help the team win.
  21. And let's sign Drew and Bonds to add to that list. Yeah, and let's sign Izturis to play SS. . . oh wait
  22. I remember reading that Arizona is kicking his tires, trying to determine how quickly he'll bounce back from his shoulder surgery. Estimates are putting recovery at 10-12 months. I wouldn't mind a one-year, minor-league contract with an option.
  23. There was mention in the Tribune this morning that the Giants may be interested in Jones. Would anyone be willing to do a Vizquel-Jones trade? It would make Izturis a infield sub, and gives us a switch-hitter at SS.
  24. Has Ted really been paying attention? Or was he blinded by the moneybags that Hendry dumped at Soriano's doorstep?
  25. Only one year? My prediction is that he gets his 300th win and retires at the end of the season.
