  1. Personally, and I know this is a pipe dream, but I would love for Hendry to play on Jim Thome's lifelong dream of playing for the Cubs to sign an incentive-laden contract to serve as our primary left-handed bat off the bench. I realize that he's done virtually nothing as a PH for the Dodgers, but that's the type of weapon you want on the bench.
  2. If our bench consists solely of those guys, that would be awful. The bench shouldn't just be for AAAA players. I'd appreciate some sort of veteran presence who understands the role of a pinch hitter for $1-2 million in addition to those listed.
  3. You're right. I'm just having a crap day and figured I would take it out on the Cubs.
  4. Bruce Miles agrees: Ugh. Given his "over-aggressiveness" stance on hitting, I see this being a return to the hack and slash offense of 05-06. Why doesn't this organization recognize that they had a leading offense in 07 because of OBP?
  5. Not that I'm discounting his ability as a hitting coach, but how much of his success with players can be attributed to the Rangers' park? The place is a bandbox to begin with.
  6. That was against St Louis in extra innings. (In STL) Not that I doubt you, but do you remember which game it was? All I remember is still up relatively late watching the game, which I believe went into extras.
  7. A few smaller moments: Reed Johnson's insane catch in Washington in 2008 Neifi's (!!!) grand slam in San Francisco in what I believe was 2006 Hee Sop and Kerry Wood's collision in 2003 with an ambulance being brought onto the field Julio Zuleta's voodoo in 2001 Todd Hundley flipping off the fans in 2002 Mark Bellhorn hitting home runs from both slides of the plate in one inning in 2004
  8. The CBOE auction seats at Wrigley Field wave hello. Granted not the same level of decadence, but limiting the hoi polloi from the best seats is a MLB issue.
  9. Not all bad contracts are created equal. GMJ is owed a little more money, is three years old, and a much worse baseball player. Bradley disappointed people with an OPS+ of 101, GMJ was at 82 this year. For their careers GMJ has a line of .258/.333/.408 while Milton has a .277/.371/.450. The Cubs would be getting considerably worse, and spending a little more money to do it. Why in the world would we even consider it? To me, it seems like the type of deal Hendry would make trying to capture lightning in a bottle similar to Grudz/Karros. And I'm certainly not advocating that he be our starting RF.
  10. I'm not sure if someone else has already proposed this, but how about Matthews Jr. + b-level prospect for Bradley? Their contracts are essentially a wash and the Angels could use Bradley to replace Abreu. The Cubs would still need a replacement for Bradley as Matthews isn't the answer to any outfield question they have. It would just be a bad contract for a bad contract.
  11. Yeah, but with Bradley ready to be traded for pennies on the dollar, there's more money not available to upgrade the offense. I'm of the mind that there won't be a big bump in payroll next year, and with the limited flexibility because of existing contracts, not offering Harden arb is the most concrete way to add some maneuverability. Figure that if the Cubs pick up (liberal estimate) eight million of Bradley's 2010 contact along with ditching Harden, that potentially opens up $12 million. However, with salary increases for remaining players, it could drop that number significantly.
  12. Certainly no longer the [expletive] of the walk.
  13. There was an article on ESPN over the weekend that Bobby Valentine was in talks for some unknown position with the Marlins. I can't imagine it would be anything other than manager.
  14. Hey, that luggage ain't going to carry itself.
  15. Question isnt who wants him, question is what do they have to offer. I cant see any top prospects comin in return, and as it says, we'll have to settle for another bad contract: Giants: Aaron Rowand-hed basically be a really expensive Reed Johnson Padres: On the off chance we could get Adrian Gonzalez, were giving up a ton of prospects in addition to MB. Chris Young-has been brought up, and be better thn nothing Rangers: Michael Young? Ive always liked him, but he has an ugly contract. Maybe Josh Hamilton? I dont know if they want to move him, but Id glarly take him. Rays: Pat Burrell? Hed basically Jake Fox, a DH in the NL. However, as its been stated before, they say the'll move Upton or Crawford if the price is right, and Id gladly give up MB+ a nice prospect package for either guy. In fact if we could get either, I migh be inclined to forgive Jim Hendry for 2009. Mets: Reyes is just spec, and I cant see it happening. The main name brought up from them is Oliver Perez, and he comes with a big fat DO NOT WANT sign around his neck. I would love nothing more than see MB deal with New York press. Just when he thought Chicago media was bad...
  16. Heyman may be on to something. Bradley for Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell. Book it.
  17. I was just looking at Crawford's contract and it seems as though the Rays have a 2010 club option for $10 million or a buyout for $2.5. So if they're looking to cut payroll, they could just make him a free agent. Am I reading that correctly. That seems like a pretty huge deal for the Cubs' off-season plans.
  18. Go for the bigger package. The problem is the package would likely consist of at least Bradley, Vitters, 1 of Cashner/Jackson/Carpenter and probably another prospect, and wed probably turn either guy into Juan Pierre. That wouldn't be so bad if we were able to get Crawford to agree to a two/three-year deal as part of the trade.
  19. So with that logic we just bench the entire team I guess? Nice. Many of them, sure. Why would you be opposed to letting Marmol, Z, and Ramirez, and Lilly take off early? because if I wanted to watch prospects play I'd go to a minor league game. As a business it does them no good to sit all their stars and recognizable names.
  20. I'd say next time wear pants, but really, she should know what she's getting into from the outset :)
  21. According to the Trib, Taguchi didn't even pick up the phone when the Cubs called to tell him to pack his bags because it was from a 312 number. Apparently he has no friends in Chicago and thought it was a wrong number.
  22. The only thing missing was a Joe Chat, but I'm not sure ESPN even does those any more.
  23. If they find a way to get rid of Miles, I agree. According to speculation by our old pal Sully, they may have found a way:
  24. Pie? Why bother when Juan Pierre can be had for the remainder of his contract?
  25. Do what? Something stupid? Not like the Dodgers gave up anything of value, but there'd be no point to this. Nevermind that Thome supposedly only wanted to go to a team that had a sure chance of playoffs. I read that as having the stones to drop worthless vets down the stretch. Yeah...that makes a lot more sense. Really Heilman's my only complaint, unless there was actually a taker for Dempster or Gregg, which I doubt at this point of the year. Yeah, and I can see the justification for holding onto Heilman if the other team was literally offering nothing and you just wanted to save face in negotiations by showing you were willing from walking away from the table. Personally I'd have let him go for nothing, as he's fairly worthless, but he's not such a anchor that you'd have to jump at the first chance of dumping him. 2004 Sosa wishes Hendry saw things your way.
