  1. I think those stupid groups from Iowa are more willing to research tickets ahead of time on stubhub, craigslist and ebay before buying them on gameday. And those prices are closer in line with full retail as opposed to heavily marked up.
  2. The same thing happened the last time they went a season without making the playoffs. Everybody assumes Wrigley sells out regardless, however, after 2004, interest declined. Numbers are skewed since they sell so many tickets in February, but when it's June and the team isn't good people don't actually show up to the games, leaving millions of dollars of revenue on the table. The economy just makes it that much worse. I recently heard somewhere that the secondary market for Cubs tickets has practically dried up. Which just goes to show that more than a fair share of tickets sold in February go directly to brokers and not direct fans. As much as I want the Cubs to succeed and sell out every game, I also want brokers to go bankrupt and disappear.
  3. I'm in favor of a six-man rotation. Let's challenge conventional wisdom!
  4. It's not just the size of the in-person audience that counts. The Blackhawks have many more opportunities to advertise than the Cubs due to the limitations at Wrigley. Also, you have to look at the quality of attendee at the game. With all the corporate skyboxes (another thing Wrigley lacks) and higher-priced tickets, you're potentially marketing to a more affluent crowd. The Blackhawks do have a TV deal with Comcast Sports Net and WGN. So yes, I see the Blackhawks have a higher ROI per capita than the Cubs and advertisers will recognize that.
  5. The pillow was clearly in the midst of a roid rage and suffocated her.
  6. Or before. It's not like he hasn't had this on his head for a looooong time.
  7. How about that Ike Davis fella? Isn't he supposed to be the future face of the franchise? Frankly, I think the Mets are probably one of the most unfulfilling teams in MLB for which to play. You're always in the shadows of the Yankees and the fan base is even more ruthless than the Cubs despite their more recent successes. if they were the Cubs, they would use Wright as the scapegoat for their collapses and boot him for pennies on the dollar... but this is also my wishful thinking because I want Wright to replace Ramirez.
  8. Ramirez turns 32 in June. He only seems older because this is his 13th season. A 3 year deal at $15 million per is unlikely but not impossible. He'd have to hit about .335 the rest of the way to get his avg up into the .270- .280 range where people think he might opt out. He's certainly capable of doing that. Random nonsensical trade possibility, if Ramirez walks, what would it take to pry Wright away from the Mets. They have deep needs in pitching and OF help, and Wright isn't getting any favors hitting in Citi Field. Minaya would never cede to rebuilding, but is it something to explore?
  9. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/05/ex-cub-bradley-says-he-battled-suicidal-thoughts.html I'll give him props for being open about his battles with depression and whatever else. It's not often that any professional athlete is this open while still in the midst of their career.
  10. I think it would be awesome if the Nats were able to make a run at the division. Philly's pitching hasn't been as solid as they expected behind Halladay, so with the addition of Oswalt and Strasburg, that could be huge for the Nats. Given the ridiculous history of getting the Nats to Washington, I think it would be great for them.
  11. I'm sorry. What did you post? I was a little distracted.
  12. From everything I've read about this incident, it was the culmination of Hanley acting above the team, not just this one time. Either way, he was wrong and shouldn't be treated better than any one else on the team. Yes, he's talented. But he can't win every game by himself.
  13. http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/theskyline/2010/05/thousands-of-people-are-getting-all-steamed-up-about-a-controversial-plan-for-an-eight-story-hotel-apartment-and-retail-comp.html I'm not saying this development will kill the vibe of Wrigleyville, but it will wound it. Currently built, it's a hodge podge of wonderful bars, restaurants and iO Theatre. A perfect example of urban renewal that killed a neighborhood is what happened to Belmont between Clark and Sheffield. High-price condo developments move in, character moved out. Now it could be anywhere in the city.
  14. We're just lulling him into a false sense of security.
  15. I don't see why Guzman isn't sent to the 60-day. He's out for the season right?
  16. I look forward to Kerry coming back to the Cubs... as a special advsior or community relations representative. He still does a lot of charity work. I could see him or Sarah securing a position with Cubs Care.
  17. Seriously? Baker in RF? Freaking Lou. :banghead:
  18. That's always how I thought major league baseball works. You're thinking of the NBA. Or Hollywood police departments. Or Wall Street and Washington.

  20. I don't agree with that at all. Even though he's super-talented that doesn't give him the right to dog a play or lash out verbally at the manager. He's still 1 of 25 and young enough that these sort of lessons should have meaning. By doing this, he is sending a message that it's okay to disrespect your manager and play according to your own rules. That's not how baseball works.
  21. Bless his heart, he means well. But I'm wishing Dempster would have pulled him aside and talked to him about making bold predictions.
  22. The game in which Maris hit number 61. Just to see it happen.
  23. I don't think the Cubs will have a "fire sale" because many of their veterans have next-to-unmovable contracts. Secondly, the NL Central is weak and the Cubs probably won't be too far out to give up on the season. They have sucked as bad as I can remember this year and they're still only 5 1/2 games out with over 3/4 of the season to go. This is with ARam hitting like Aaron Miles, DLee struggling, and the "Ace of the rotation" doing a mediocre job out of the bullpen. Plus the only expensive player without a no-trade clause is Ryan Dempster, which in hindsight seems odd since Hendry passes those things out like candy.
  24. Yikes. Talk about stats falling off the side of a cliff. His last year in Philly was 250/367/507 and his two-year tenue with Tampa (which included a total of 75 fewer PA) was 211/303/350.
