  1. At the very least, this kind of decision makes me think that Ricketts has his head on straight on how to build an organization in the 21st century. Scouting plays a role in player decisions, but that scouting should be backed up by hard numbers. With that said, my gut tells me that Sandberg isn't the type of manager Ricketts envisions after Lou. Oh, and Hendry should update his resume.
  2. And so begins Steve Stone vs. Cubs Managers Part 2: Lou's Revenge!
  3. I'm so glad they won in Philly. I hate that city and its denizens so very, very much. I just wish the Hawks were a little more petty and rubbed their noses in it.
  4. why blame the manager when the players aren't playing well? by this logic nobody on the staff has any responsibility or does anything. You're right. I may have oversimplified the issue of players' roles in it, but if a manager is putting a player in a position to succeed (rightly or wrongly), there's blame to share on the players' part for not being good. There is an equal share of blame on the manager's part for sticking with an under-performing player for too long.
  5. Lou's job is to manage the roster he has. It's Hendry's responsibility to put the roster together. Lou did plenty of dumb stuff in 08, but there was a lot more talent on that team. They're both failing. The biggest Hendry failing is hamstringing this team with high-priced, long-term contracts that can't be moved without a significant cash loss to the team and/or player permission. Way too many no-trade clauses and back-loaded contracts to go into fire sale mode or make improvements. The Cubs are theoretically in the same kind of place as the White Sox where they have pieces that would be attractive to other teams, but the key difference is that the Sox could actually move them because of shorter contract terms and lower costs. Personally, I place the blame directly on the players. Lou has been the same manager for the four years he's been here. It's the players underperforming that is to blame.
  6. While I'm sure Kenny would love to unload half the team to replenish the farm, the only person worthy of anything above a B prospect is Konerko. And even then, he's a free agent at the end of the season. That White Sox team is absolutely awful. I went to the game on Friday night (free company tickets) and not only was the park empty, those who were there were watching the Hawks game on the concourses. That and the team played with absolutely no sense of urgency. They made the Cubs look like the Yankees.
  7. Bud sticks his head back in the sand regarding instant replay: Honest to God, what an idiot.
  8. It's manageable to be important, but it's more important to manage.
  9. Hendry will sign him anyway and he'll be converted into a middle infielder. Or a middle reliever.
  10. How much would it suck through to have to throw cash in to trade a prospect? The kid's paid like a early veteran middle reliever even thoug he hasn't done jack since 07.
  11. At this point, how is Iowa closer to home than anywhere else (besides the West Coast). Even outside of the NLC, everything is a two-hour flight. Maybe if he didn't suck at pitching we wouldn't need to have this discussion. Of course, Hendry was a fool for giving a proven wide receiver a five-year, $10 million, no-trade-clause-included contract to pitch.
  12. One of the little details that came out of this story I found most shocking was Fay Vincent throwing out hundreds of no-hitters in the record book. Anyone have information on how or why this happened without backlash?
  13. The 1985 St. Louis Cardinals make me disagree. Make them replay the game with the original players. I'm sure they would push to include Pujols since he was only 24 in 1985.
  14. There's a simple answer to this dilemma: expand instant replay!
  15. If Selig was willing to let the 03 All-Star Game end in a tie, I don't see why he wouldn't want to do something that was truly good for the game.
  16. I'm trying to think of who though. Pujols and Cabrera went from the OF to 1B, but didn't they both start out as 3B? I just think anybody who spent his entire college and minor league career in the OF is going to have a bit of a tough time going to 1B. Lance Berkman.
  17. I LOVE the batting helmet three-card monte thing. I don't know why but it keeps me so very entertained. And if I'm not distracted, I'm always right on where it is. Jumbotron for all!
  18. When was the last time the Cubs did that? Kevin Hart and Sean Gallagher come to mind, even though they were from our system.
  19. I'm thinking Z had a sudden afflication of attention whore-itis.
  20. Class it up a little and buy the "Cards fans take it in the Pujols" shirt.
  21. Wait, who's the bigger idiot. Phillips for offering Wright or Riccardi for not taking him? Phillips also hasn't gotten a call to be a GM because he loves tapping that sweet ESPN intern action.
  22. Well at the very least, he's consistently a dick to everyone.
  23. I think those stupid groups from Iowa are more willing to research tickets ahead of time on stubhub, craigslist and ebay before buying them on gameday. And those prices are closer in line with full retail as opposed to heavily marked up. Are you trying to tell me they use computers in Iowa now? I hear they have one computer every 250 square miles now. And paved roads!
