  1. I don't see the point in talking about Guzman. But no, they don't need him. A move like this could push Cashner back into the rotation picture. A Wood-Marshall-Marmol tandem would look pretty good even if Marshall regresses a little.
  2. I'd give him a shot at spring training as an instructor pending the outcome of his prosecution. The guy had an amazing ability to hit regardless of steroids. Given his personality, I think that would be a good opportunity to gauge his ability to coach.
  3. Given Hendry's commitment to failing managers, I don't see him getting rid of Quade before the end of his contract regardless of who is in the dugout.
  4. There will be nearly as many and they will just take place earlier. There were 14 teams at least 10 games behind in their divisions by August 31. 18 teams were at least 8 games behind for the wildcard. You mean to tell me that shortening the season by even 10 games won't reduce the number of inconsequential games in September? How many August games will be inconsequential when the season is shortened, since you'll now have fewer games to make up deficits? I'm not opposed to a shorter season, but not because it somehow makes the games more important. The easiest way to shorten the schedule would be to reduce the number of in-division games. This by the nature of division standing would reduce the number of "bottom feeder" games, such as against the Royals, Pirates, Orioles, etc. If anything, this would make remaining games more significant because of the tighter run to win the division. There will still be crappy teams, but you wouldn't necessarily get more opportunities to pad your record on them (if you're a good team). Although I see your point about teams being out of it from practically day one. That's natural in any league.

  6. I wouldn't mind a shortened season at all. By the time September rolls around, there are only 8-10 teams that are playing for playoff implications. Those late-season games between bottom feeders can't be good for either team's finances.
  7. Not the worst contract in the world, but with the Ricketts saying payroll will be decreasing, I wouldn't expect to see any further upgrades this off-season.
  8. People had heard of Ron Washington before he got the job, though. That means he's a better manager than Quade ever could be. Either that or blow works. How much blow are you talking about? Enough to get busted for possession not enough for traffricking.

  10. Also, you could take those first couple paragraphs and it could say the same thing about Sandberg. I really hate Wojo some times.
  11. Not to quibble but 3B and LF weren't doing us any favors in the offense department either.
  12. Unless Cliff Lee can play first and have a .370 OBP, he isn't worth the cost.
  13. This. I don't know how people can say Sandberg "deserved" the job. Just because you publicly petition for a job doesn't mean you deserve it. He's four years of minor league experience and no major league experience. If he was anyone else, he wouldn't have even had a sniff of this job. Then Phil Rogers has this to say: Big bag of NO.
  14. Here's to the lesser of two evils! :good:
  15. Rick Morrisey made an interesting assumption in a column yesterday. Why would Hendry continue to quietly pursue Girardi unless Girardi has made some under-the-radar comments about wanting the job? I don't see Hendry as just waiting for Joe to answer his calls unless there has been some backchannel communication. Because if there wasn't, you're absolutely right in stating we're left with Hendry's second choice.
  16. I agree that Hendry is waiting for Girardi, but I don't see Hendry/Ricketts hiring Wedge over Quade or Sandberg.
  17. MLB teams don't support direct deposit? That's crazy.
  18. Phil Rogers opines that the job is Girardi's to turn down before the team moves on Quade/Sandberg.
  19. Yeah, you don't want to be asleep at the wheel when it comes to LaRussa. Obviously. You leave the sleeping at the wheel to him!
  20. fwiw What are the merits of Wedge? He never seemed that great to me.
  21. The new manager certainly won't have as much flexibility in picking his new staff with both Rudy and Larry keeping their jobs for next year at least. Makes sense that the Cubs would want a manager comfortable with retaining coaches, which means Quade or Sandberg to me.
  22. To be fair, that was a pretty unreal storm that night. And if I'm one of the fattest players on the field, I'm going to want a headstart to the dugout.

  24. I think it may be because there's no one in the organization with authority telling Ricketts, "Hey, this guy's an idiot." Just my opinion. No "baseball man" in line for the president's role is going to come in and tell Ricketts that Hendry is an idiot. Jim Hendry is a card carrying member of the baseball man fraternity. Fine, but my point stands that someone in an authority figure needs to point out that Hendry is detrimental to the future of the team. No one currently exists in that capacity.
  25. Oh, Christ. They hire Grace to announce, Girardi to manage and Sandberg to be the bench coach and call it an offseason. Don Zimmer as an usher. Le Elia as director of media relations.
