  1. I really don't care if they raise payroll. I care if they spend the money better.
  2. I agree. There was nothing wrong with the way Howry and Eyre pitched this year. Wuertz, when he was finally called back up, was a stud. They were not the problem. The problem with the pitching staff was mainly the starting pitching. If you have better starting pitching that lasts longer in the game, you won't have to use up your bullpen as much and then you won't have to use the guys in the back of the pen as much either.
  3. Both are very appropriate.
  4. Can both teams lose this series? Is that possible?
  5. It's not just that he rode them down the stretch, it's that he had them throwing 110-130 pitches per start in April and May. I agree you can't blame him for trying to get us into the playoffs, but abusing them the whole year was unnecessary. Not to mention the fact that Dusty tried to kill Z this year. 128 pitches in Z's last start of the year. Brilliant.
  6. Yeah but what does that mean in Venezuela? I was going to say the same thing when I saw CUBBIEblue's post.
  7. As per ESPN.com EDIT: There goes one potential replacement.
  8. I'm surprised that nobody commented on this part. I guess I'll be the first. Just say no to Lou Piniella. Two or three years in Chicago? I hope not. We could do a lot worse than Lou and A-Rod . . . like just Lou, for example :) I know. I was referring specifically Lou coming to Chicago. If getting ARod meant Lou Piniella as the manager, well, I'm not sure how I would feel about that.
  9. You think the M's will pony up the money for Daisuke and Schmidt? Honestly, no. But given all the things in their favor in terms of the Japanese players signing with them (and the fact that Schmidt isn't a slam dunk Mariner signing), I think they have to be in the top 2 or 3 (add Baltimore, I guess). That wasn't really a fair question on my part either. I was trying to point out that many people are viewing Daisuke and Schmidt as non-Cubs because of rumors of them going to Seattle, but it's highly unlikely both end up there. I've written off Schmidt as a Cub because I think he'll go to Seattle and I've done the same for Daisuke but I think he'll be in New York next year.
  10. I doubt Leyland will be in any sort of hot water after the year is over no matter how good/bad they do in the postseason.
  11. I guess if you are going to trade the guy, right now would be the best time to do so.
  12. So you fire a manager that takes his team, one that was supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league, into the thick of the Wild Card hunt in his first year as manager. Brilliant. ETA: In the ESPN.com article, it says Fredi Gonzalez is expected to be named the replacement today.
  13. I had to go with the Yankees because of that ridiculous lineup although Minnesota was a close second. GO A'S!!
  14. Do any of those teams have to play anyone good other than USC. I am not impressed at all by Cal after being destroyed by a team from a real conference. That game couldn't have gone any worse for Cal. Even if they lose a close, tough game on the road they would have received some respect. Now everybody will go back to the Tennesssee game. It sucks but I understand why it happens. Regardless of what you say about Oregon beating/losing to Oklahoma, they did play very well against an out of conference opponent from a major conference. That being said, I'm picking Cal to win a high scoring entertaining game.
  15. No this is just the end of one chapter of torturing. The book aint over either, its the beginning of a whole new chapter. Can't you let me live in my dream world for a little while? :D
  16. Translation: "If they offer me a buttload of money that is significantly more a year than anyone else does, then I'll come back."
  17. Gotta agree with that. Didn't even think about any sexual innuendo until you pointed it out.
  18. Wow, they went from 8.5 games over Minnesota on July 1 to a 1-game lead on July 31. A bigger overall loss of games by Detroit, but still impressive. eta: though I suppose not nearly as impressive as losing 7 games in a week like the Cardinals did The Wild Card is a crapshoot. I realize that they lost 7.5 games in the WC standings in a month and that is never something to brag about but with the WC there is the potential for numerous teams to get hot and catch you. With the division, realistically there will be maybe two teams with a chance to catch you. And they got swept by the Royals to end the year.
  19. I think the AL's cumulative 154-98 record against the NL in interleague play this year holds more weight than a seven game series between one team from each league when determining which League was better this year. Arguing the WS determines which league is better is almost as bad as saying the All Star game determines which league is better. As far as I'm concerned, the AL was a far better league this year.

Well that sure is interesting. I agree. It was the starting pitching that really hurt the Cubs this year (although DLee going down didn't help matters). While I don't think Jacque's contract is going to turn out to be the best of FA signings, he was more than serviceable this year and was the least of the team's problems. I realize that the contract is an issue and isn't something that should be ignored when discussing the player but I think that some people focus too much on the contract and find ways to dimish Jacque's on-field production because of it. Give the guy some credit where credit is due.
  21. Lou Piniella, Felipe Alou? No thanks.
  22. You should just put that in your sig in large, bolded type.
