  1. I know it a bit late for an other games thread, but I don't care. -The Pirates win over the Brewers ended a 17-game losing streak to Milwaukee. -The A's were losing to the Twins 12-2 going into the bottom of the third but now lead 14-13 going into the eighth inning after scoring seven in the seventh.
  2. This is mostly dealing with guys who aren't signed to major league contracts. I know the ML minimum is more than the MiL minimum salary, so what happens when a guy gets called up to the major league team? Take Bobby Scales, as an example, who had no ML service time coming into the year. When he (or a guy like him) got called up, what happens to his salary? Does this change if the player has any sort of service time?
  3. Since the Steelers and Pens won titles this year, I started thinking about the teams that I've pulled for all my life, and the championships they've won. In the big four, I am a Steelers, Penguins, Cubs, and Bulls fan (born in Chi, raised in Pit). 1979 - Super Bowl XIV Steelers - I was a baby 1991 - Penguins, Bulls 1992 - Penguins, Bulls 1993 - Bulls 1996 - Bulls 1997 - Bulls 1998 - Bulls 2005 - Super Bowl XL Steelers 2008 - Super Bowl XLIII Steelers 2009 - Penguins Noticeable absent from that list are the Cubs and the Gamecocks. Still, at age 29, 11 championship seasons that I can remember is pretty good. Thank God I didn't grow up in Cleveland. Your turn.
  4. I've heard people talk about it and understand the concept of it (i.e. if a guy lets a lot of runners on he's probably going to have a higher ERA and vice versa), but what I haven't been able to find are concrete numbers on it. Is there a formula that calculates expected ERA based on WHIP (eERA = a * WHIP + b) or something along those lines? Basically, if a guy has a 1.00 WHIP (or whatever number), about where do we expect his ERA to be?
  5. I know I'm not the only one to have Rammy on their fantasy team and with him being out at least 4-6 weeks (as is being reported at the moment), I'm going to need another 3B since I currently don't have another one on my roster. My league isn't too deep with only 8 teams so I've got some options. Categories are R, HR, RBI, SB, K, AVG, OPS and it's head-to-head. Available are (in no particular order) Russell Branyan, Scott Rolen, Mark Reynolds, Hank Blalock, Mark Teahen, Casey Blake, among others. Who would be the top choice if I'm looking for the best player available? I know Branyon is going to regress from his .999 OPS, but by how much? Can Teahen be expected to keep up this production or is it a fluke and is he going to revert back to what he did in 2007 and 2008?
  6. Is it okay to call them the Cobs yet? Anyway... This guy http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/mlb/players/65/3845.jpg 1-0, 5.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP against this guy http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/mlb/players/65/5403.jpg 2-0, 3.31 ERA, 1.59 WHIP Raising Wainwright's ERA would be a good start, Cubs.
  7. http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn233/OHCubsFan/font.jpg Mike says, "Aaron who now?" Let's keep it rolling against Wandy
  8. Joe Torre said he's not going to let Manny beat his team. Joe's Dodgers once beat Lou Piniella's Mariners team that had 116 wins.
  9. The current record is 199 set by Ryan Howard last year. Mark Reynolds currently has 198 while Howard has 195. Jack Cust currently has an outside shot and is sitting at 190 after today's game.
  10. Rich Hill gave up one run on three hits over seven innings and Jacque Jones hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Braden Looper to give the Cubs a 2-1 win over St. Louis at Wrigley. The win, combined with Cincinnati's 8-3 win over Milwaukee, gave the Cubs sole possession of first place at the end of a calendar day for the first time all season. The Cubs had been tied with the Brewers on August 1 and 2 but had yet to be in first all by themselves. They would spend only two more days in second place all year.
  11. Just to put this in it's simplist form: Let's say a pitcher gives up a single to start the game to Batter A. The second hitter, we'll call him Batter B, grounds into a fielder's choice with Batter A getting forced out at second. The pitcher then proceeds to retire the next 26 hitters and doesn't allow another batter to reach base. Would you say the pitcher only allowed one batter to reach base or two, and why?
  12. Is it worth it? I would be giving up Soto and Holliday. Offensively I have: C: Soto 1B: Howard 2B: Roberts 3B: ARam SS: Yunel Escobar OF: Holliday, Hart, Swisher Util: Victor Martinez/Fukudome/Youkilis BN: Kemp Would it be better if Hafner was removed from the deal since he apparently can't hit anything anymore? I'm leaning towards no because I don't think it really addresses my problems which have been HR and RBI.
  13. I really only have two closers (Papelbon and Todd Jones) and am getting killed in saves right now. I also have a surplus of starters right now (Webb, Haren, Greinke, Parra, Wang, Hill, Smoltz, Volquez, McGowan, Gallardo, Kazmir) and am getting more than enough wins than I need right now. So I'm looking to trade for a closer and one guy who has an excess of closers has Hoffman, B.J. Ryan, Brian Wilson and George Sherrill available and he's interested in Gallardo, McGowan and Greinke. Would trading any of my starters straight up for one of his closers be worth it? I'm iffy on Ryan's health and Hoffman's age and I'm not sure if Wilson and Sherrill will get enough chances considering the Giants and Orioles are horrible.
  14. I have Phil Hughes on my team and he has, well, sucked this year. Cliff Lee is available and has pitched well in both of his starts this year, though both have been against Oakland. Lee stunk last year and I'm a little hesitant because of that. Should I drop Hughes to pick up Lee or stick with what I've got?
  15. So it's this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6559.jpg Season (2 starts): 13 2/3 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 12 K against this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6864.jpg Season (2 starts): 10 IP, 13 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 BB, 6 K Even though Rich Hill didn't do his part in saving the pen and only went 3 innings, Jon Lieber more than made up for it as the Cubs swept Pittsburgh and have now won five straight games. Big Z has been great so far this season - especially with his walks - and hopefully that can continue on Friday.
  16. So it's this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/7578.jpg 4/4 vs. HOU: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 RR, 3 BB, 4 K against this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/5784.jpg 4/4 at FLA: 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K A four game winning streak has put the Cubs on the right side of .500 - hopefully for the remainder of the season. While the series has already been won, it would be nice to pick up the sweep going into the series in Philadelphia. And please, Rich, pitch deep into the game - the bullpen could use the day off.
  17. The Losers were upgraded to the Cobs before todays game and with their second straight win and reaching .500, they are back to being the Cubs. So it's this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/7678.jpg 4/2 vs. ATL: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K against this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6223.jpg 4/2 vs. MIL: 4 2/3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K Cubs got just enough offense today to help Z pick up his first win of the year. Hopefully Theodore Roosevelt can bounce back from a poor first start to help keep the win streak going into Tuesday's off day.
  18. The Losers have been upgraded to Cobs after beating Oswalt today. However, they'll need to win this one as well to be upgraded to Cubs again. So it's this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6965.jpg 4/1 at SD: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K against this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6559.jpg 3/31 vs. MIL: 6 2/3 IP, 3H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K I have no idea what the Cobs are going to do in this game. They got shut down by Chris Sampson on Friday but beat Oswalt today. Backe isn't as good as Oswalt but not as bad as Sampson. Oh, and drink some flippin water, Z.
  19. This guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6646.jpg will probably throw a no-hitter so it really won't matter how this guy http://assets.espn.go.com/i/mlb/profiles/players/65x90/6493.jpg pitches tomorrow because he's going to pick up the loss.
  20. I've been debating this with my editor for the past few days after I made a crack about Dirk not deserving the MVP last year. I maintained that Dirk didn't deserve it and that Kobe was much more valuable to the Lakers than Dirk was to the Mavericks. Obviously these weren't the only two candidates (LeBron being having a case as well and I would have been fine with him winning it) but strictly between Kobe and Dirk, who was more worthy of the NBA MVP last season?
  21. Steve Slaton declared today. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/news/story?id=3194897 It's certainly a loss for WVU but they do have Noel Devine to replace him. Still have Pat White, though.
  22. Just saw this reported on ESPN. EDIT: He was traded for Chris Burke and a couple other guys, I think.
  23. Washington got the week started with a 24-16 win over the Bears. Here are the rest of the games this week. 1 p.m. ET Miami at Buffalo St. Louis at Cincinnati Dallas at Detroit Oakland at Green Bay San Diego at Tennessee NY Giants at Philadelphia Carolina at Jacksonville Tampa Bay at Houston 4 p.m. ET Minnesota at San Francisco Arizona at Seattle Pittsburgh at New England Cleveland at NY Jets Kansas City at Denver 8:15 ET Indianapolis at Baltimore Monday Night New Orleans at Atlanta
  24. Hopeful: Cubs over DBacks Cubs over Rockies/Phillies (don't really care) Indians over Yankees Red Sox over Angels Indians over Red Sox Cubs over Indians Realistic: Cubs over DBacks Phillies over Rockies Phillies over Cubs Indians over Yankees Red Sox over Angels Indians over Red Sox Indians over Phillies
  25. If the Cubs can beat Webb, I guarantee they'll win the series. If they get to a Game 5 back in Arizona where they'll have to face Webb again, they'll lose the series. I don't think they'd stand a chance in Game 5 against a well-rested Webb. If the series lasts 3 or 4 games I think the Cubs take it.
