  1. Physically and talent wise, Colvin reminds of this guy..... http://baseballreference.com/o/o'neipa01.shtml Pretty good player, wouldn't you say? Now, I am not saying Colvin will be another O'neill, but I do believe that Colvin will be a darn good player for the Cubs. I believe Colvin is going to justified being the 13th pick. That is why I DISLIKE short-term analysis, esp during/immediately after the draft. That is so shortsided. You have to wait till 2008 before you can fully critique the pick of Colvin at 13th.
  2. Tim Wilken has had alot of recent success with the draft. If he believes this kild, Colvin, will be a fine player in baseball, than I going to believe him and the scouting team (who prolly scouting him all yr, and they already know the strengths/weaknesses of Colvin) over certain fans who were not happy about the pick (wasn't singling out anybody). I am going to trust a guy who has been at his job for over 20 yrs, and had success, over message board scouts/coaches (no offense).
  3. I believe it's actually Arizona, not ASU. And the Cubs have offered him $500,000. But he's a Padres fan. Eww... Nah, he will be a fan of the Cubs, if they pony up the dough.
  4. Keep in mind though, that the minor league coverage is now done by Kevin Goldstein, formerly of Baseball America. But with the Harris/Pujols comparasion, that site has alot of credibility issues, to me. So Goldstein...not even the best BA writer, mind you has alot of work ahead of him to make BP credible source.
  5. At least the kid has the technical term down pat.
  6. .....which is pretty much a gaurantee that we get blown out. And who ever heard of the Cubs running the opposing pitcher's pitch count up? Dude, it's call hitting, not "working the pitcher." You got to swing the bat, dude.
  7. Brewhaha; Quick question; Why in the world was Hardy starting in front of Hall, before the injury? Hardy, to me, is an all-glove/little hit SS like Jack Wilson. Hall is the superior player, IMO, and I don't understand why the Brewers would play the obviously inferior player.
  8. =D> Keeps Davey away from the Cubs.. Boooo..... I'll take DJ over any other available candidate, or soon to be available candidate in the sport. I'm amazed they got him to come back...I thought he had sworn never to return to MLB or something like that. He's been gone a LOOOOOONG time. I'm especially amazed the idiot Bowden of all people was able to bring him aboard. I wonder what his compensation package looks like... Thank you, thank you. (waves hand around) DJ sucks less the Baker, but he still sucks. I'd prefer a manager with a clue. Dierker, Valentine, or Curious George IN THAT ORDER. I don't see how anyone with a clue can say Davey Johnson sucks. The evidence just doesn't support such a claim. I'll bring the evidence. Johnson has a 564 career winning percentage. Seasons over .500: Johnson 12 (86%) Seasons over .600 Johnson 3 (21%) - very impressive. Seasons with 100+ win teams Johnson 2 (14%) World Series wins Johnson 1 First Place Finishes Johnson 4 (29%) Johnson also finished under 3rd or lower twice (14%). Those are also the only seasons he managed an under 500 team. Johnson wins. He has the ability to relate to players and talk the game in a language they understand, but he isn't opposed to using stats and computer print-outs, yet he isn't quite viewed as a "sabermetric" guy. Johnson would be an excellent choice as manager and probably better than most choices out there. It's a shame he's no longer available. Well, look at Buck Showalter. He put the championship foundation into place at both NY and Ari, does that mean you want his micro managing, overbearing, style on the Cubs? Of course not. I just feel DJ is also not a good fit for Chicago. I'd prefer Dierker or Valentine, anyways. What does Showalter have to do with DJ? You haven't provided a single reason yet to justify hating DJ. People talk about DJ's past as a manager, and I threw in another guy with a solid career as manager, and someone the Cubs could have had...had they not decide on Baker 4 yrs ago. Look, I just don't like DJ, AND I AM GLAD he signed with Washington. I can't give you a specific reason. And the feeling I get most, if this he would have been short-term manager, looking to win now, meaning any young players the Cubs have, would have been lost in the shuffle. =D> to Bowden and the Nats for taking a mistake away from Hendry.
  9. Fred Lewis-of, Craig Whitaker-rhp, or Kevin Frandsen-ss/2b are three kids the Cubs could realistically asked for, and possibly get, especailly considering it is "Loose" Brian Sabean still as Gm. But since these are the Cubs, I suspect in any trade scenerio with the Giants, they'd end up with Jason Ellison, or some Nefti Perez clone.
  10. If KW is back in Chicago in 2007, he should NOT be a part of the rotation plans. The Cubs management needs to stop thinking about Wood as a starter, and more of a reliever. This "pitcher" cannot stay healthy, or pitch deep into the game. I don't care about his ego, he better be a reliever next yr.
  11. Since the play that Rowand ran face first in the fence, and broke his nose, Rowand has became a fan favorite. That coupled with the face that Phillies are battling the Mets for the division, I just DON'T see the Phillies dealing Rowand.
  12. Look, I have no problems with the Cubs making a trade with the White Sox, but only if they get a very good young player in return. If it's Howry, I would want Josh Fields, or perhaps Jerry Owens. If it's Eyre, I would McCarthy. Don't like it, fine. But if the Cubs couldn't get one of those three players for Eyre or Howry, then forget it.
  13. Banedon, it'basically a "heard it from a friend" type rumor..... : If one of the "low level pitching prospects" is this kid---> http://minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Matt%20Harrison&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=457448<---then I would seriously consider, esp...if the Cubs are FORCED to take Reeksma  .

  16. The bottom line is all of this is Hendry is not going to trade Jones, regardless of how he plays. Agreed. People need to stop thinking about how to trade Jacques Jones for the time being. JJ will be a Cub for at least 2 FULL years. How do you know some dumb desperate GM won't make a great offer in hopes of contending this year and saving his job? First: Steve Phillips is in the ESPN studio, so there goes your theory of "desparate GM trying to save his job." Second: Because JJ in his first yr of the contract, and not to many teams are going to look to acquire a player at the begining of his contract. Besides, JJ is a Hendry target, and he wouldn't trade him, just yet. His value is too high, in Hendry's mind. Third: If a desparate Gm is looking at JJ as a player who could save his job, then perhaps, said GM should be updatinghis resume, cause he will be fired, anyways. There are some teams where money is not going to be an object and the contract will not be a huge hurdle, especially if the Cubs send some cash. The Yanks, Red Sox, etc.... if they need a left handed bat headed down the stretch they will do what it takes to win no matter what. Most of the "big money teams" already have their OF set. So, the Cubs would have to eat some of the contrct to move Jacque to another team. To which, I just don't see JJ being moved this season.

  18. Hill and Guzman, I agree. But his sample size isn't worth really comparing Marmol to Marshall. Marmol as of right now is a reliever, and Marshall is a starter. With that said....if Marmol is a starter in future, I would like to see the Cubs bring him along like the Astros did with Oswalt, and keep him in the bullpen, till he if/is when he ready to start. If not...Marmol is looking like a dominate closer in training.
  19. Everything I've heard has him in the 10-20 range of the first round. If he drops into the 2nd round, Mark Bradley got about $2 million in guarantees. If he gets taken in the first 20 picks of the NFL draft, I will piss my pants. He's far and away the No. 1 WR in the draft right now, so I'd have to think he'll be a top-20 pick. He's not really fast, but could be a very good possession receiver a la Keyshawn in the League. How does Sammy chose to play WR, and pitcher in the two sports? Most pitchers who had played football, ended being the QB. Him choosing WR over QB, would be an interesting story. There is no way that he can or will play NFL and MLB at the same time. It's simply impossible for a pitcher. And no, I haven't heard anything about his ultimate choice either, but my gut feeling is he sticks with football. We'll see though. It'd be exciting to have my favorite college baseball player with the Cubs. Most of the people switching from baseball into football as a QB weren't pitchers. Quincy Carter, Matt Mauck, and Drew Henson were all 3B. Chad Hutchinson is the only P that converted into a QB that I can think of off the top of my head. Farnsy and Sisco never played pro or even college football for that matter...they just happened to have the build to do so. Both Sisco (who was RECRUITED by the Pac-10 as a DE) and Farnsworth both did play football in high school. ----- YearofDaCubs; Quincy wasn't the only one drafted by the Cubs. Matt Mauck, LSU QB on the NT team, was drafted by the Cubs in 1997. And even Antwaan Randel El was another drafted by the Cubs. Point remains, the Cubs have an unnatural love for athletes, instead of players.

  21. It will never happen. You never know: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060607cubsdraftside,1,4419975.story?coll=cs-home-headlines I suspect, there will not be a holdout. Which would be good. I think Sammy days as a ND baseball player are over. The quote seems to me that Sammy/ his advisor and the Cubs might be closer to a deal than what most people think. And it does suggest, Sammy (I can't spell his last name) will give it a go for both sports. But, my fear, is that he is one injury away from having to choose one or the other. And IF he signs, does anybody think they will try and room Johnson and Sammy together, and see if they can't push each to becoming better pitchers?
  22. That was the first thing I noticed. Only 3 more walks in 2005 in almost twice the at bats. Maybe Colvin might become a better PRO, then he was a college player. I think, Colvin could very well be a very good---not a superstar---player for the Cubs inside of 2 1/2 yrs. I think he is going to progress that fast.
  23. Just too bad he ain't a Cub, or it would be worth having this conversation again.
