  1. The bottom line is all of this is Hendry is not going to trade Jones, regardless of how he plays. Agreed. People need to stop thinking about how to trade Jacques Jones for the time being. JJ will be a Cub for at least 2 FULL years. How do you know some dumb desperate GM won't make a great offer in hopes of contending this year and saving his job? First: Steve Phillips is in the ESPN studio, so there goes your theory of "desparate GM trying to save his job." Second: Because JJ in his first yr of the contract, and not to many teams are going to look to acquire a player at the begining of his contract. Besides, JJ is a Hendry target, and he wouldn't trade him, just yet. His value is too high, in Hendry's mind. Third: If a desparate Gm is looking at JJ as a player who could save his job, then perhaps, said GM should be updatinghis resume, cause he will be fired, anyways. There are some teams where money is not going to be an object and the contract will not be a huge hurdle, especially if the Cubs send some cash. The Yanks, Red Sox, etc.... if they need a left handed bat headed down the stretch they will do what it takes to win no matter what. Most of the "big money teams" already have their OF set. So, the Cubs would have to eat some of the contrct to move Jacque to another team. To which, I just don't see JJ being moved this season.
  2. =D> Keeps Davey away from the Cubs.. Boooo..... I'll take DJ over any other available candidate, or soon to be available candidate in the sport. I'm amazed they got him to come back...I thought he had sworn never to return to MLB or something like that. He's been gone a LOOOOOONG time. I'm especially amazed the idiot Bowden of all people was able to bring him aboard. I wonder what his compensation package looks like... Thank you, thank you. (waves hand around) DJ sucks less the Baker, but he still sucks. I'd prefer a manager with a clue. Dierker, Valentine, or Curious George IN THAT ORDER.
  3. Hill and Guzman, I agree. But his sample size isn't worth really comparing Marmol to Marshall. Marmol as of right now is a reliever, and Marshall is a starter. With that said....if Marmol is a starter in future, I would like to see the Cubs bring him along like the Astros did with Oswalt, and keep him in the bullpen, till he if/is when he ready to start. If not...Marmol is looking like a dominate closer in training.
  4. Everything I've heard has him in the 10-20 range of the first round. If he drops into the 2nd round, Mark Bradley got about $2 million in guarantees. If he gets taken in the first 20 picks of the NFL draft, I will piss my pants. He's far and away the No. 1 WR in the draft right now, so I'd have to think he'll be a top-20 pick. He's not really fast, but could be a very good possession receiver a la Keyshawn in the League. How does Sammy chose to play WR, and pitcher in the two sports? Most pitchers who had played football, ended being the QB. Him choosing WR over QB, would be an interesting story. There is no way that he can or will play NFL and MLB at the same time. It's simply impossible for a pitcher. And no, I haven't heard anything about his ultimate choice either, but my gut feeling is he sticks with football. We'll see though. It'd be exciting to have my favorite college baseball player with the Cubs. Most of the people switching from baseball into football as a QB weren't pitchers. Quincy Carter, Matt Mauck, and Drew Henson were all 3B. Chad Hutchinson is the only P that converted into a QB that I can think of off the top of my head. Farnsy and Sisco never played pro or even college football for that matter...they just happened to have the build to do so. Both Sisco (who was RECRUITED by the Pac-10 as a DE) and Farnsworth both did play football in high school. ----- YearofDaCubs; Quincy wasn't the only one drafted by the Cubs. Matt Mauck, LSU QB on the NT team, was drafted by the Cubs in 1997. And even Antwaan Randel El was another drafted by the Cubs. Point remains, the Cubs have an unnatural love for athletes, instead of players.

  6. It will never happen. You never know: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060607cubsdraftside,1,4419975.story?coll=cs-home-headlines I suspect, there will not be a holdout. Which would be good. I think Sammy days as a ND baseball player are over. The quote seems to me that Sammy/ his advisor and the Cubs might be closer to a deal than what most people think. And it does suggest, Sammy (I can't spell his last name) will give it a go for both sports. But, my fear, is that he is one injury away from having to choose one or the other. And IF he signs, does anybody think they will try and room Johnson and Sammy together, and see if they can't push each to becoming better pitchers?
  7. That was the first thing I noticed. Only 3 more walks in 2005 in almost twice the at bats. Maybe Colvin might become a better PRO, then he was a college player. I think, Colvin could very well be a very good---not a superstar---player for the Cubs inside of 2 1/2 yrs. I think he is going to progress that fast.
  8. Just too bad he ain't a Cub, or it would be worth having this conversation again.
  9. I have to assume the odds are very high. They wouldn't have wasted their 2nd pick on the guy if they didn't plan on signing him. I just don't know why you'd sign a pitcher and then let him go play football. Huge risk. The only way this makes sense is if they believe he will quit football. My guess is they'd offer him 1st/2nd rd type money if he would quite football. He would say, I promise ND I would return for my senior yr, and the Cubs agreed. But after his senior yr at ND, he would have to give up football, for good. That's my guess. What's with the Cubs drafting football/baseball players? Matt Mauch, Quincy Carter, Kyle Farnsworth, Andy Sisco, etc, etc...Don't the Cubs know, there is ALREADY a football team in Chicago?
  10. I'm definitely a supporter of "P Nev" I'd prefer the more corny "7th Nevin."
  11. As somebody said earlier, at this point, LaPorta is heading back to Florida. But I don't suppose it would be too much trouble to take a shot. But, it would take 1st rd money to get LaPorta to sign, after being potentially drafted this late.

  13. They did jump into the Cubs/Stros game last night when Z was pitching in the 8th. I must admit that I was impressed with that. Only because Kruk threatening to eat Karl and Harold, if they didn't show Z's potential no-hitter. I believe Kruk call Z for his cy-young winner this yr. He want get it, but atleast somebody acknowledge Z's ability.
  14. I hope Walker is a man, or he is ONE UGlY woman..
  15. I told you SLO had a good team this year. I was accepted to Cal Poly SLO out of HS without applying. I should have gone and walked-on to the baseball team. I could have been drafted by the Cubs! I don't know do you have a concept of the term "OBP?" If you do, then no you wouldn't have been drafted by the Cubs. I did have a good eye in HS. But I played CF! And I run really fast! You never know... Then, you would be have a perfect fit for Oakland. You know the Cubs don't need "basecloggers", and you sir would have been a "baseclogger."

  17. Did anybody repeat "OBP is a good thing," is a good thing, to Dusty Baker?
  18. Is it me, or is it hot in here? Cause I'm feeling a backdraft...........
  19. So we really just spend a draft pick on a guy who openly hates the Cubs and who very well might not even play baseball? Yeah...new guy seems to fit right in with our management philosophy. look, you don't expect anyone with the Cubs to be able to use google or myspace, do you? Don't you remember the Cubs limited Carlos Zambrano's "time" on the computer. Carlos is their only access to the "Internet" for the Cubs. :)
  20. WGN = Win Guaranteed Now! No....it means "We've got Nefti." Get it straight.

  22. Does anybody else feel the first rd should have a "rookie scale" similar to the NBA? I'm sure there are alot of vets, who would go along with it, as there is NO WAY any HSer or college player selected in the 1st rd, should be paid more then some solid veterans. Just no way.... KC really needs Andrew Miller (to combine with Butler/Gordon/DeJesus/Buck/Huber/Greinke to form a nice nucleus for the future. And for pricks to decide where the go, because of money, they should go to where their talented is need most. (ok, RANT OFF) Sorry.
  23. Exactly, I don't understand why people are harping on Baker tonight. This game was just about as flawless as you are going to get from Baker and the Cubs. Enjoy. People are disgusted with the amount of pitches Z throw, but let's face it...it's not really about the pitches that hurts the arm, it's the mechanics. When pitchers get tired, they tired to get lazy with their mechanics, and there arms would go to spots theys shouldn't. I'm no pitching coach, but Z look like he had solid mechanics from pitch 1, to pitch 126, thus he eliminate any necessary "stress" in his arms, by staying consistant with his mechanics. Bottomline: to those who thought Baker should screw the no-hitter and take Z out....you guys are COMPLETE wrong. Eat crow. Baseball is about superstition, and with Z having it "ON" tonight, you don't break that superstition. You allow the pitcher to go as FAR as necessary to achieve the no-hitter (unless it's extra innings). And when Z gave up the hit with 1 out in the 8, he or for that matter Z, wanted to finish the inning. Good decision by Baker, and those Baker hater's for the night (not calling anybody out specifically), just ENJOY the win, and Zambrano's performance. Stop looking for anything to nitpick about. =D> =D> Carlos, oops, I mean Ace Carlos.
