  1. Knock off your ND griping. MSU could never, not with all the breaks in the book, play USC like ND did. MSU is below the Irish because their schedule has been a joke apart from ND and Ohio St. And yet MSU beat ND.
  2. Roy Oswalt (1-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Mark Mulder (0-1, 1.29 ERA). Discuss.
  3. No, they should have Oswalt go today. He gives them their best chance to win, especially on regular rest. But I agree that if the Astros lose today, they're done.
  4. Third inning, Angel Guzman pitching: 1B Kendry Morales strikes out swinging. :) DH Travis Hanson flies out to CF on the first pitch. CF Charlton Jimerson reaches on an E-6*. LF Cody Haerther flies out to CF. Gooz: 3 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 1 K, 69 pitches (39 strikes, 30 balls). * Gooz threw 8 of his 18 pitches in the 3rd inning after the error. Travis Foley relives Angel in the 4th, so that's his final line.
  5. On all but one of the walks, he had 2 strikes on the batter and couldn't finish any of them off.
  6. DH Matt Murton leads off the 2nd inning: Ball 1 outside. Foul ball, strike 1. Ground to second, 4-3.
  7. Second inning, Angel Guzman: CF Charlton Jimmerson bloop singles to LF. LF Cody Haerther walks on a full count. C Mat Tupman walks on a full count, bases loaded. SS Wade Robinson grounds out to first base, 3-unassisted. Jimmerson scores, 1 out. RF Michael Bourn reaches on a fielder's choice, 4-unassisted as Tupman is tagged out on his way to third base. Haerther holds at third. Two outs. 2B Howie Kendrick doubles, Haerther scores, Bourn to third. 2-0 Surprise. Coaching visit at the mound. 3B Corey Smith flies out softly to LF. Gooz: 2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 0 K, 51 pitches (28 strikes, 23 balls) :(
  8. First inning, Angel Guzman pitching: RF Michael Bourn walks (after falling behind 0-2). 2B Howie Kendrick grounds into a fielder's choice, 5-4. Kendrick safe at first. 3B Corey Smith batting. Kendrick steals second. Smith walks. Coaching visit to the mound. 1B Kendry Morales flies out to LF, 2 outs. DH Travis Hanson softly lined out to LF. Guzman: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K, 18 pitches (9 balls, 9 strikes). Matt Murton is the only Cub in the starting lineup, he's batting 5th and DHing.
  9. TLR wins hands down.
  10. why is voluntarily leaving ones job spelled the same as signing a new contract to stay at ones job? It is so confusing. Voluntarily leaving is resigning. Signing a new contact is re-signing. My mom (journalist/editor) would be so proud of you.
  11. Last year was the near-record breaking one...I'm sure Lindgbergh was closer to 25" (EDIT: 22.49"). I live in Pasadena. LA Downtown got nearly 38" last year, UCLA was up near 50" and Pasadena was at 60". No rain in AZ today - Angel Guzman will pitch, but the game isn't on radio (3:05 CT). :(
  12. Yeah, it's pouring out there. Some of what we've been having the past few days. I thought it never rained in California and Arizona? It isn't real rain. It's more like a heavy mist. Being a born and bred midwesterner, I can tell people who are native Californians that they have never truly seen a "good" rain. I've lived in California for 10 years now, and I have seen lightning storms here 3 times. That's it. Well, we got 60" of rain last year...that's more than more than places like Seattle, Miami, Bangkok and Rio de Janiero got. And we've had 3 lightning storms in the past month. But yeah, California weather is pretty tame (but has been far more interesting the past few years).
  13. He won't sign with the Cubs for less than 4. Of course I'd prefer 3 to 4, but inking him is more important. As Tim has suggested, you could always trade him once you feel he's on the precipice of decline.
  14. I honestly see him as a Cardinal next year. I think Jocketty has accepted the benefits of statistical analysis in a way that we could only dream of as Cubs fans. Ugh.
  15. They should but I fear they won't even try. I think he ends up in Anaheim.
  16. San Diego, LA, Anaheim, St. Louis and Boston have been mentioned by the media. EDIT: Yes, Anaheim. I still call them that.
  17. Andy got to celebrate his pennant after Game 4, and after Berkman's home run last night. I don't feel sorry for any of them. Did you see the Cardinals' reaction after the game last night? No celebrating. They simply shook hands and headed for the clubhouse. They know that they still have work to do, unlike the Astros after Game 4. That's why the Cards are the best team in baseball. I don't think the best team has yet been decided. At least not for this year. The Cards were the best team in the league this year. The playoffs decides who gets the championship, but it doesn't change the fact that STL was dominant for the regular season. Agreed. The champions aren't always the best team in baseball that year.
  18. Yeah, it's pouring out there. Some of what we've been having the past few days.
  19. SAMMYWHO? and everyone else, drop the race issue and personal attacks.
  20. I hate hate hate a reliever coming in and throwing an IBB to his first batter. Have the previous pitcher do it.
  21. Brinoch, I've heard a few rumors of the Dodgers moving Kent to 1Band looking for another 2B if they can't find a better hitting 1B.
  22. in san diego, i heard that it has something to do with high winds knocking long flies down in left. is there anything to this as well? I remember reading about that in the USA Today when Petco opened. It was in regards to the Santa Anas. Those don't happen that often, BBB is right.
  23. We're not San Diego - Dodger Stadium is 15 miles inland. In the summer (for about 1-2 months of the season), the sea breeze/marine layer never returns so dry night games can be nearly as high scoring as day games. But other than that, I agree.
  24. At least Pujols' shot was a legit one, not a cheesy fly ball ala Berkman last night and Burke in the NLDS. And they say it was 412 feet. That shot was 450 if it was a foot. Maybe the dimensions of Minute Maid Park in the area it was hit limited the measurement to 412 feet. i'm pretty sure the ball was still rising when it hit that concrete wall It was. That was a shot.
  25. But it's not like the Crawford boxes are only there when the Astros are up. The visiting team can also take advantage of the short porch there. Mel Ott hit most of his home runs over a wall that was 275 feet away. Should we take him out of the hall because he probably got a few "cheapies" in his career? It works both ways. There's a difference between making excuses for a loss based on the ballpark, and complaining about the stupidity of the design of the ballpark. It is the same no matter who is batting. But you wouldn't put the fences 150 feet away, or 600 feet away in any new stadium, and it's not because it would be unfair against one team. It's because it's dumb. The short left field porch is a joke. The insane cut-out area in left center is stupid, the center field is pointless. It was a poorly designed ballpark. The stupidest thing of all is that hill.
