  1. “I have a lot of buddies who surf,” Reds manager Dusty Baker told his team’s official Web site. “When they catch a good wave, they ride it all the way to the beach. You ride that wave and keep on riding. You can’t worry about falling off.”
  2. Considering the source, yes.
  3. Strikes me as a relatively low percentage for a closer, actually. I disagree, since some of those games the Cubs were already losing when he came in. If that were the percentage in actual save situations that would be different. I think he's just saying that in general, it would seem to be a low winning percentage for games in which a given team's closer appears, given that they're coming in with a 9th inning lead the vast majority of the time. The stat struck me the same way.
  4. The above-normal patience for Rammy was there before he got hit on the wrist.
  5. I really, really hate the phrase "just wins games."
  6. I love how they mention batting average as the reason our offense is doing so well and not once do they mention walks or this team's newfound approach at the plate.
  7. Not really. The fact that it coincides with the wrist thing makes it slightly more worrisome, but I'll chalk it up to random variance at this point.
  8. This whole argument is so unbelievably stupid. The whole notion of some players on a baseball team being leaders is ridiculous. There are good players and bad players. Good players win, bad ones don't. Simple. Even if there's something at all to be said for leadership in the clubhouse (whatever the hell that even is) it wouldn't have a damn thing to do with the positions played by said players. What the hell do leaders do? Play hard and yell motivating stuff in the dugout? Show up to work everyday on time? Give speeches in the middle of losing streaks? What? Even if you buy into all that crap, what does it matter what position said player would play. It's just such a dumb thing to argue about, anyway.
  9. Cool stuff. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080516-chicago-cubs-pittsburgh-pirates,1,29976.story
  10. So this thing might actually wind up being pretty cool, huh?
  11. I was awesome last year, too (except for playoffs, when I choked). I should've known that my mojo >>>> Jake Peavy
  12. It's more like a way of saying he slapped a clubhouse TV yesterday.
  13. I just hope Berkman has cooled off somewhat by Wednesday (or by that whole series, for that matter)...
  14. 15. I think Sunday may be Marquis' last chance, but then again, Ive been saying that since last July, so who knows. What we need is for Hill to be effective and find the zone consistently in his next AAA start and for Marquis to be terrible (but Cubs still win)... Best case scenario right there.
  16. Striking out a lot doesn't make you a freeswinger. Freeswingers come in all varieties, and many of them strike out very little. This. Most of the most patient hitters are going to strike out a lot. They're routinely in deep counts.
  17. I hate when teams make up injuries to get someone off the roster. Same goes for the Red Sox and Buchholtz. He cut his hand beating up on a TV after the game yesterday. Is that true? Because if so, that's outstanding.

  19. the problem is that kerry isn't up There's a whole half-inning for him to warm up....He wouldn't be up at that point for the 9th anyway.
  20. They are like 4th in the NL in runs scored and doing pretty well when not facing us...
  21. Sounds like a close one. I liked how he was ahead in counts, though.
  22. Probably not, unless he pinch hits at some pt against a righty.
