  1. He's a 2B, not an OF. But either way, I want no part of him. He was barely replacement level last year, injury-plagued and 30. He's just not worth putting us $14 million closer to the luxury tax threshold. Sorry I thought I read they were moving him to OF full time, or considering it. Either way, he'd be an OF here. He was worth half a win in a poor injury plagued season. The last 3 years he played 140+ games he was worth 4.5, 4.9 and 4.8 fWAR (2013, 2015, 2016). The injuries are always a concern with him but to add a potential 4+ win player, 14m is not a lot. I'm gonna stop because it sounds like I'm advocating for him, but its more of a 'not understanding why hes a hard pass' type of argument. that could be true with regard to the outfield thing. i do know he got some time there, but i figured that was because Ramirez entrenched himself at 2B while Kipnis was hurt. i think he could be a nice bounce back candidate for certain teams. i'm just not willing to gamble $14 million on a guy who doesn't really fill a need for us, will be 31 on opening day, and is showing signs of decline both health-wise and performance-wise. there's better ways to allocate limited resources.
  2. Out of curiosity why is Kipnis a bad pickup if its a buy low type of thing? He was bad last year but was a nearly 5 win player in both 2015 and 2016, only 30 and a relatively ok contract the next 2 seasons. I know we don't really need an OF, but he's not someone I could completely avoid acquiring in a trade. He's a 2B, not an OF. But either way, I want no part of him. 3. 100% agree. but it's starting to feel that way. is Reed supposed to be close to signing with someone or something? No, I just haven’t heard him connected to the Cubs in the last couple days. A Reed + Morrow offseason for the bullpen would be excellent.
  4. I horsefeathering hope not 100% agree. but it's starting to feel that way.
  5. i'm not interested in happ for salazar at all.
  6. it's gonna be kintzler for us isn't it?
  7. I'm a little slow, but I'm not following. How does trading away a middle infielder make more sense if followed up by a trade for a starter pitcher (whom you'd likely need to use a bat to trade for). It seems it would make it less likely. by using the prospects you acquire in a Russell/Baez trade to acquire a starting pitcher.
  8. i'd be ok with this, depending on the price. Just sign Cobb if you want to pay a bunch of money to a guy who won't throw 200 IP. i'm fine with that outcome, but i like duffy more than cobb pretty easily. he's also younger and his contract is better than what I think Cobb is likely to get.
  9. i'd be ok with this, depending on the price.
  10. well if the cubs are going to trade baez or russell to SD, i suppose i'd be cool with Machado as a replacement.
  11. yeah I don’t see a Baez/Russell deal with the Padres that I wouldn’t hate. And I really like Brad Hand. (I too was wrong about Soler/Davis last year.)
  12. what was Fullmer's injury? is he going to miss significant time in 2018?
  13. Jim Bowden is joining the Athletic so you can all cancel your subscriptions now.
  14. Machado, maybe. But not Harper. They're not just going to completely ignore the luxury tax, and they've got their OF (and DH) pretty well covered now. Yeah a corner OF makes no sense for them now. But I could definitely still see them making a play at Machado.
  15. yeah, that’s a bad tweet.
  16. good, leaves Harper for us.
  17. yeah, but that was 2008. we've come a long way as a society since then...
  18. didn't Dipoto and the Angels part ways on somewhat ugly terms? just a little extra sting on top of losing Ohtani and piling up all this IFA money that they don't need.
  19. seattle gonna have to get real creative with that international money now
  20. this is hilarious. the angels are like the one team out of the seven that none of the baseball media boobs took seriously.
  21. My favorite: I love that [insert player] "doesn't want to be the guy" is the refrain of the spurned cards fan. "Ooh, look at you, mister, 'I want to be a part of a competitive team.' A REAL ballplayer would jump at the opportunity to headline a roster full of trash." maybe we don't "play in a desirable city." maybe we don't "win a lot of games." maybe our fans are "incredibly racist." and i guess we don't "have a chance in the division for the next ten years." maybe we do "condone drinking and driving and white-collar crime."
  22. i mean, i know "money doesn't matter" is the narrative and i obviously hope it's true, but maybe it kind of matters if the angels and mariners are suddenly stockpiling IFA space after meeting with him. on the other hand, those two teams already had a significant advantage over everyone else but the rangers moneywise, so maybe they're just desperate?
