  1. Figures Gerut finally gets a hit off the lefty.
  2. I only remember one time the fake to third, throw to first actually worked. Sosa got caught off first.
  3. Cubs lead by 22 runs this season. They also have a BA that is .018 above the D-backs and a SLG that is .038 above. The D-Backs have a slight (.002) advantage in OBP. I'd say the Cubs offense is better. You know what I don't get? We are ahead of the White Sox in OBP, SLG, and BA, but they have seriously outscored us. What's up with that? Podsednik. He has 51 SBs. We have 46 as a team. Despite all those SBs, Walker has been more productive than Podsednik.
  4. I think that Mitre would be a similar player to the likes of Heilman - they both have a limited amount of ML experience over the past 3 years (Heilman with a little more starting experience as the Cubs have used Mitre out of the pen quite a bit), both show promise, but to this point have consistantly high ERA's and have not put it all together. Im not completely sure what kind of pitcher Petit projects to be, although I cant think that we don't have someone of equivelance in our plethora of pitching in the minors. Possibly send them Rusch and Mitre even? As for Dellucci, I dont think he's anything near a long term help for this team. As a 31 yr old journeyman who has put together 1 decent season, I dont see him as anything this team would want or need. He'd be another Holly, Grieve, Neifi, etc... a decent player off the bench but not someone who's going to make an impact in a starting role for years to come. We do not need anymore good bench players clogging our starting lineup. I'd like Dellucci's .400 obp in front of Lee, and he's only signed for 1 more year, and he's not an expensive player. Also, on the topic of Dellucci being a journeyman with a decent season. Dellucci had laser eye surgery that he credits his improvement this year. He's right around his career AVG and SLG, but his improved vision has lead to many more walks, making him more valuable. I'd definitely take him. Soriano, on the other hand, I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole because of his road production, salary, and player cost. He had .860 road ops from 2002-2004. Perhaps if you didn't have such a bias, you'd point to this and the fact that he plays in some pitcher parks in the AL West. My guess is that he'd do pretty good in Cincy, Houston and Wrigley. Milwaukee's a hitter's park too right?? In 2002 he played for the Yankees, and was 26 years old, while now he's approaching 30 and playing half his games in a hitter's paradise. Sure Seattle and Oakland have pitchers parks, but the point is that he's playing half his games in a heavy hitters park, and road games are closer to a park neutral selection. Soriano isn't much of an upgrade over Walker, if at all, we've been over the numbers before. Texas is asking for a ton for Soriano, and he'll be a free agent after next year after he makes upwards of 10 million next year. I don't think that's worth it for a marginal(if that) upgrade.

  6. From what I can gather, Murton has been an OF since he started college. I don't know about what he played prior to his time at Georgia Tech.
  7. Gerut/Murton platoon.
  8. Lee makes 7.67 this year, 8.67 next year, and is a free agent after 2006.
  9. Look at his splits, THAT is why the board would melt down. His slugging is nice, yes. But he doesnt do jack crap outside of texas. SPLIT AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS Home 205 39 66 17 1 18 48 10 1 33 6 2 .322 .353 .678 1.031 Away 192 30 46 10 0 7 20 8 2 46 8 0 .240 .276 .401 .677 Im not good at getting Code to work, but thats kinda decent i guess.... ANyways, Look at the difference. There is a .3 point diffence in his OPS. And his SLG that you speak of is .401 away..... Small sample size. :D It's just one of those years. His 3 year split from 2002-2004 away from home is .534. As a Ranger 2004 Home: .317/.360/.526/.886 2004 Road: .244/.291/.444/.735 2005 Home: .322/.353/.678/1.031 2005 Road: .237/.274/.398/.672
  10. Dusty consistently does not put the team in the best position to win, that's what it comes down to. There's a distinct possibility that whoever replaces Dusty would make many of the same mistakes. However, that doesn't mean he shouldn't be justly criticized.
  11. Dubois's IsoP at AA was nearly .200, that's a bit of a difference from Murton's numbers.
  12. Bingo. IMO the above quote holds the key to why Hawkins has been receiving such vocal disgust from the fans at Wrigley. If he had conducted himself with more humility, I highly doubt that he would have become such a target. Sure there would've been boos -- he was terrible at a point late in 2004 where there was such little room for error -- but if he had been more humble and apologetic for his failings, I highly doubt the boos would have been to the extent that he is experiencing them now. Corey Patterson was pretty subdued about his failings, and he still got harassed by the Wrigley crowd. To me, it comes down to how frustrating the player is to watch. A reliever who blows a lead, or a hitter that K's a lot is a much more likely target than someone who grounds out every AB, or a starter who is ineffective for 5 innings.
  13. You can read Will Carroll's rumor mill that is updated periodically throughout the day at BP(all of BP's content is free for the next week). Carroll hasn't been that reliable in the past, but as a rumor loving guy myself, I found it my duty to pass it along. From Tuesday: "The Pirates are clearly a seller. There's a good bit of action on Matt Lawton, Kip Wells, Mark Redman, and Jose Mesa. Lawton would likely be the first to go. He nearly went to the Cubs last week, but the demands were too high and the Cubs went to Jody Gerut instead." And from last night/today: "Two names that have recently started grinding through the mill: Chad Billingsley and Corey Patterson." "The Angels aren't yet pressing the panic button. Still, they're stunned at how quickly Steve Finley has declined. What was once a surplus of outfielders is now a collection of guys who play center field badly. Along with the Orioles and Rangers, the Angels would love to have Mike Cameron. Failing that, they'll be calling to check back on Corey Patterson." Remember, take these for what their worth, Carroll hasn't been very reliable on trade rumors in the past.
  14. That's correct, click the box score link for the Iowa game on the first post in this thread.
  15. Incorrect.
  16. Increased awareness?
  17. NO Really? That's not that horrible a deal now that I think about it. I didn't think so, either, but after a moment of consideration... If you, as I do, think that our Ramirez is at or nearing the caliber of hitter that their Ramirez is, then essentially you end up trading about 10 million a year for Kevin Youkilis in that deal. That's...not so appealing. I have my doubts about Aramis being able to take enough walks to approach Manny's level of production. But, after thinking some more, the age difference between the Ramirez's probably would dissuade me against that deal.

  19. I wouldn't have any problem with that. The only thing I'd worry about is Affeldt is similar to Remmy in that he gets out righties better than lefties. We all know the problems that Dusty seems to have in understanding this phenomenon. I'm not a huge Affeldt fan. He's 26, which gives him some time, but he's getting rocked away from pitcher friendly Kaufmann this year. Last year he had a .300+ BAA too. Is Kaufman really pitcher friendly? It was Coors East until they moved the fences back in for the start of 2004. That slowed the run scoring, but is it all the way to 'pitcher friendly' as opposed to nuetral now? Affeldt did very well for KC in 2003 too. I wouldn't object to Affeldt at all. Experience, talent, potential - could turn out to be very good if he stays healthy. Really good stuff. In 2004, Kaufmann was the 5th most pitcher friendly park in baseball This year, it's 8th most pitcher friendly. Now that I look at it, Affeldt has been reasonably effective since coming off the DL: 15 IP, 1.80 ERA, 1.53 WHIP(not good), and 9 K/9. I'm not completely against the idea, but I'm not positive he'll be an upgrade, and I fear what we'd give up to get him.
  20. I noticed that too, but we already gave up Dubois for someone with the same skillset.
  21. Tucker never touched the ball, so he never technically "misplayed" it. At least that's my understanding of the rule.
  22. They have a huge fan base, that's why they get the media attention. They are the dominant base in one of the biggest cities in the US, and they have a national TV audience for half their games. It's a simple matter of coverage in proportion to the people who care about that coverage.
