  1. Warren is the wildcard. I've seen some speculation that he'll take this opportunity to really put his stamp on the organization.
  2. He's elected free agency: https://www.bleachernation.com/cubs/2023/10/17/edwin-rios-is-officially-a-free-agent/ Thinking that through, he was definitely right to elect FA. PA at Iowa are going to be ridiculously hard to come by on that team. Assuming that most of the guys that played the bulk of the year at Tenn get the bump, there are going to have to be a whole bunch of guys traded or released. Right now, we've got these guys all looking to get AAA playing time: OF: Davis, Perlaza, PCA (maybe), Canario (maybe), Caissie IF: Mervis, Vazquez, Slaughter, Strumpf, Murray Jr, McGeary C : Windham, Aliendo, Opitz With a boat load of fringe and semi-fringe guys looking to get in on the action, too. I'm sure there will be trades, releases, guys left at AA, guys promoted and more. I'm definitely not looking at it as a problem. But Rios is correctly reading the room that he was not going to get playing time if he stuck around. Once we remove him from the 40 man, Jared Young may make the same decision.
  3. or, you know, this.
  4. Where on the ice? If it's a faceoff in the offensive zone with 6.2 left, give me that one all day long. If it's in play in the defensive zone with 6x5, then it's tougher

I want Texas to win so that owners have a recent example of spending big leading to championships
  6. I'm curious what she did with the Marlins that impressed you. I didn't really pay much attention to her team building and only saw middling results.
  7. Bold statement to say that a 3-3 team has the best roster in the NFL.
  8. You're also forgetting Hughes. The top five arms going into the season were supposed to be Adbert, Fulmer, Boxberger, Thompson and Hughes. Estrada was hoped to emerge to become a big part of the pen, too. The first five of those guys were all unavailable at the end of the year and Estrada regressed instead of taking the next step. They should have invested more to start the year. They should have added more than Cuas at the deadline. But they also lost their projected top five relievers at the end of the year - that's much worse than anyone would normally anticipate.
  9. The analytics have Murphy sucking balls in 2 of the 3 games so far
  10. I refuse to believe this is true.
  11. There are a whole bunch of other guys I'd rather trade first. He's got two option years remaining - I don't think that's going to be a huge factor for him. At the risk of getting into this debate with Tom again, Alcantara is the toolsiest, highest upside position player in the system. While he's not likely to hit his 90th percentile outcome, there's nobody else in the system that can provide that superstar kind of outcome. To be clear, he's not untouchable in my mind. But I'm not trading him for a 3 WAR player like Alonso.
  12. Nah. Just dreaming big
  13. Tom Ricketts has enough money. Let's just go get: Shohei to play DH (and eventually pitch) Soto to play LF / 1B / Who Cares Yamamoto for SP Candelario to play 3B / 1B A backup plan for starter in CF in case PCA isn't ready, but amenable to being a bench guy once PCA is ready 2-3 quality relievers Pick up Gomes' option I'm viewing those top 3 acquisitions as coming from different markets, so easier than signing the top 3 FA in any given year. Will this put us way, way, way into the cap? Yeah! But wow, what an offense.
  14. I think that's an overstatement of the difference in positional value between LF & 1B, but I haven't looked that up. Just guessing on this one. I don't want to move Happ. I want to move the 5.5 WAR LF because I think he'd still be a 5.0 WAR 1B/ 4.5 WAR DH if he sheds the negative defensive value as an outfielder. Also, as a side note, this is why I really wasn't into extending Happ. Yes, it raised the floor over the next few years. But it also created questions like this one where we are talking about maybe not going after a stupidly good hitter because we already have Ian Happ at his position on the field. (the easy answer, of course, is that you still go get Soto and figure out the defense later)
  15. Is that because the superstar gets to play where he wants to even if it hurts the team? Soto to 1B/DH is the easy call here to make the fit work. If Miggy and Pujols can move to 1B, so can Soto.
  16. Do you mind letting me in on the joke? I'm having a serious woosh moment here.
  17. My buddy and I did 7 parks in 8 days last month: Fenway, Yankees, Citi, Citizens, Camden, PNC and Progressive. Out of all those, our favorite was Camden. The one that we thought was the nicest experience was Citi, but that's partially because we nearly had it to ourselves.
  18. That wasn't a joke. I don't know what you're going for there.
  19. Funny - I was there at a game in mid-September and I thought they were kind of flat for being in a pennant chase. Attendance wasn't great, either:
  20. Given the risk and the payout, I would be surprised if the cost was that high.
  21. Tampa is widely expected to trade Glasnow this offseason. Obviously a great pitcher when healthy. And he's looked very good this year when he got back on the mound. I don't know what the acquisition cost would look like when it is super obvious that Tampa will want to trade him. Cubs have had reported interest in the past, so it wouldn't be a surprise to have him on their radar now. His contract was structured with a $5M payment this year and $25M next year. For Tampa, that's an AAV of $15M, but I think under this CBA the hit for the acquiring team would be a $25M AAV. As a side note, we would reunite him with former Pitt prospect Taillon in the rotation. Now go get Cole!
  22. Which, thank goodness. I don't want them anywhere near Maye or Caleb
  23. I really think GB should take this opportunity to extend him to a new contract.
  24. I have to remind myself that he's been in the league one more year than Fields
  25. Wait...you want to get rid of: Stroman Hendricks Taillon Smyly Happ Heuer Madrigal Leiter Wisdom Tauchman I'm confused on your "9 arbitration guys" - are you counting some of these? Keegan (same pre-arb status as Steele) Hughes (also pre-arb) Wesneski (also pre-arb) Morel (also pre-arb) You make no mention of retaining these free agents / guys with options: Gomes Fulmer Candelario Boxberger The only people left in this scenario are: Steele Merryweather Alzolay Swanson Nico Suzuki Amaya Mastrobuoni Assad Bellinger (hopefully he's re-signed) Even with the extra cash, that's a whole lot of players to replace. I can't see that as being realistic for one offseason
