  1. My apologies. I don't know where, given his past behavior, I would think that Sammy is not a "team player". And my post was nonsense? Wow.
  2. There's two sides to the coin. Not every Cub fan has some sort of undying respect and love for Sammy.
  3. Count the number of times the word I or a variation is used. How about a quote that contains "grateful", "thankful" or something like that? Or would that be below the great one? I think the unending myopic Sammy love on this board is "ridiculous".
  4. He's a self-centered cheater? Other than that, I could see no reason.
  5. The Cards are the favorites until proven otherwise.
  6. I'm curious why people think Prior has any trade value right now.
  7. Just checked the thread.......the first poster said this was reported on WGN, which it wasn't. Sounds fishy.
  8. That's his job.
  9. Win, we don't agree on much, but I'm with you here.
  10. Wow, that kind of creeps me out.
  11. The Cubs have stood firm on their principles, and as a result have not gotten a premium free agent in Lord knows how long? 15 years? 20? And, as a result, the Cubs don't have any terrible long term contracts that are binding their hands behind their back. They have plenty of money to spend this off season. There is a trade off. Its not all just the down side of not having gotten a premium free agent in a long time. There are positives, too. And clearly negatives, as well. I'm not happy about missing out on Beltran or Guerrero. But I'm glad Lee signed for what he did. Sometimes, players simply don't want to play in Chicago for a variety of reasons. To think we know that its because of Hendry's ineptitude or the fact some other player is getting paid 3 million a year for two years is simply impossible to know with any degree of certainty. That said, I want Hendry to get it done. Give him what he wants and move on. But to think that it is valid to say that Ramirez won't return because Hendry signed Wade Miller or someone else is simply unsupportable. But here's the problem with that rationale: The Lee contracts are the exception, not the rule. If Hendry targets someone, then at some point he's going to have to step up and pay. To think that a good/great player is going to sign a Lee contract is not realistic. Who wouldn't be happy for what a player like Lee signed for? And if a fear of "terrible long term contracts that are binding their hands behind their back." is going to stop Hendry from signing a top-shelf guy? Then he should continue to sign the mid-tier players of the world and see where that gets him.
  12. I'm sure this has been covered, but I'm not going through 60 pages. Wouldn't it be smarter to take the Matsuzaka money and sign a couple of mid-level starters?
  13. I think this way because Jim acts this way. He's reactive. The occasional salary dump acquisition really doesn't mean much. Time and time again, Hendry is out chasing yesterday's news. His whole 'save some for the trading deadline' theory screams of not aggressively filling needs. Going into last season with the "I've decided I like guys who can catcher the ball", as well as the chasing after the mythological much needed leadoff man, defines a guy who is not ahead of the game. I don't understand why you routinely fall on the defend Hendry side of discussions, when Hendry has done nothing but fail repeatedly. Acquiring a couple of individuals good players, or making a couple of individual good deals, does not mean nearly as much as the big picture. And the big picture shows that without a doubt Hendry has failed, big time. What is it about him that forces you to pretend otherwise? Well put, Goony. This organization is nothing if it is not reactive. Proactive would have been trading Juan Pierre at the break, instead of getting nothing for him. And this was not just about Japenese players, it was about Hendry as a whole.
  14. Based on what? His history of signing mediocre players. Name me the last signing of Hendry where you said "Wow, that was proactive. Hendry was really a step ahead of everyone else with this one." You're right, his signing history isn't the best. He has done most of his improving of the Cubs talent via the trade. He was proactive last season in the FA market when he signed Eyre and Howry who seem to be worth the money spent, though some here think improving the bullpen is a waste of money. But, yes, clearly he has missed out on guys like Beltran, Guerrero and others. However, the past is the past. New things are happening all the time. For example, the Cubs spent a lot more money scouting Asia this past season. One would assume since Hendry is GM, he would have had something to do with that decision. That was a change from the previous few seasons since Leon Lee left. If that change can be made and approved by Hendry... If you are going to base your decisions solely on the past, then you might as well include all of Hendry's past. Well, since I wasn't talking about players acquired via trade ( He's been living off the ARam and Lee fumes for quite a while), I didn't see the point of including it. I was talking about players he signed. And yes the past is the past. And it's also the only thing I have to go by in judging Hendry. So until Hendry shows something, I won't expect a whole lot.

  16. Way too forward-thinking for Hendry. He would rather go with someone like DeRosa.
  17. http://www.desipio.com/?p=1222#more-1222 Sorry if this has been posted....
  18. This isn't the "worst time ever" because the Cards might win the Series....it's because THE CUBS ARE A JOKE!!!! Far too much misdirected anger by Cubs fans.
  19. Can't go with you there, RichHill. I gave up on Prior at the end of 04 and Wood's been off my radar for quite a while. I honestly think there is no G.M. that would have continued to put his eggs in the Prior/Wood basket as long as Hendry. How many Cub fans on here after the 05 season were screaming for more starting pitching? Also, not going to the playoffs the year after making the playoffs is not an improvement. That should magnify the fact that 03 looks to be more and more of a fluke under Hendry. We'll see. Hendry's fighting for his G.M. title at this point. He better have a kick-ass offseason.
  20. "I could also put together a pretty strong argument for how he has improved this team since taking over in July of '02." This team has gone from five outs from the World Series in 03 to last place in 06. Short of a Marlin-type teardown, there aren't too many G.M.'s with a 90 to 100 million dollar payroll who could pull that off.
  21. Too bad Kranitz won't be the pitching coach.
  22. Bruce, Who would you like to see the Cubs hire as manager?
  23. Heard on the Score today that "sources" say Hendry is waiting to see if Bruce Bochy will be available if the Padres lose their series, which would explain his timetable.
  24. And don't forget his guy Furcal......never mind.
  25. There's a winner!!!! Key ingredient to a lead-off man: getting on base. Just say no to Pierre.
