  1. Haugh makes a good point, I just hope that's how the Bears see it. They could view this as an opportunity to cut bait. But in reality, the sentencing is no real justification. It's not like he did another bad thing, even though it's another bad headline. Haugh also noted the Bears should go out and resign Boone: I'd much rather they resign Boone, then they can keep the tackle rotation as Harris, Dusty, Boone, Johnson and Idonije, and they don't have to use up a draft pick on this position. If there's a stud available with the first pick, that's fine. But I'd rather they go out and draft O lineman, DBs, a RB and possibly a WR or TE. And depending on Briggs' situation, a LB. Sounds good, but I think Haugh was referring to re-signing Scott not Boone. Of the two, if we were going to re-sign someone I'd prefer Scott. I am unaware of what Haugh is referring to with Harris' "possible health concerns." My understanding was, he'll be 100% and ready to go for the season. Maybe I missed something.
  2. We all know this is a possibilty with Wood. So we just have to deal with it moving forward.
  3. I was kind of hoping they wouldn't have to spend a draft pick on a DTackle. They've spent a bunch on them already and need so much more. It's 4 months on paper.....likely reduced to 2 months. Tank didn't even practice until August last year with his injury. This year he'll be ready to go mid-April with early release. Bears don't need to draft DT. Dvoracek is like an extra 2nd round pick this year. We don't? We only have, i think, 3 on the roster counting Tank Johnson. Is Anthony Garay still on the roster? Remember, Ian Scott and Alfonso Boone are both gone. Can't Idonije play either DL spot? Why let a solid DE rotation get watered down? Face it people, we need to either draft or sign another defensive linemen. Its not that big of a deal Ian Scott -> Dvoracek Boone -> Idonije/Garay Personally, I like the Dvoracek/Idonije options better than Scott or Boone, they just haven't had a chance to show what they can really do. But, you're right, we could maybe use another filler DT. At least for camp, maybe see what he can do. I certainly wouldn't be spending a high draft pick on one though. Pick a journeyman-type up in FA? Possibly.

  5. I don't think the league rules make a distinction between whether you bet for or against your team though. It's just.....gambling is prohibited (from what I've heard). Anyway, let's say Pete bets on every game. Game 1 he bets $200 bucks. Game 2 he bets $300. Game 3, $400. He says he bet on his team because he believed in them to win. So does that mean he believed more in Game 3 than Game 2? Does it mean he really didn't believe all that much in Game 1? How can you say it DOESN'T mean that, for sure? I don't think we want to go down that rabbit hole. He gambled, got caught, got punished. Whether he should be re-instated at some point is another argument, but there can be no doubt what he did was dead wrong.
  6. Mariotti is the guy who once called John Elway a "greedy and scared punk." Then he won the Super Bowl. Didn't he also claim the White Sox were dead during the '05 season? Oops. If Mariotti says Prior is done, then I feel better about his chances to get back.
  7. I don't mind watching Pete squirm. I deem what he did to be worse than a player taking steroids or amphetimines when it was prevalent, and I believe a lifetime ban is appropriate. I have zero doubt that Pete's gambling affected the decisions he made as the manager of the Cincinatti Reds, and I certainly do not believe that he never bet against the Reds. He had a gambling problem. He lived for the high that one experiences when they win a big bet. It's akin to the high one feels on cocaine per my understanding. The brain releases that very same dopamine in large quantities. You aren't going to tell me that he never compromised his "integrity" to obtain that high. Keep showing more and more of your cards, Pete. At this rate, you may not even enter the Hall posthumously. And I wouldn't attempt to. And I'm not arguing Rose should be in. Although, as I'm sure you realize, the chances that there are similarly bad people already in the HOF are pretty high. I'm just lamenting that there's no end to this charade. Only Pete's death will bring this thing to a close. Maybe not even then; but at least we won't have to hear about it over & over & over.
  8. I'm starting to hear Prior's name mentioned in the same sentence as Mark Fidrych.
  9. This is the problem with lifetime bans. A life is a really, really long time for the rest of us to have to watch the proverbial chicken run around the chicken coop with its head cut off. And that's what Rose has become. So now we watch, forever, as Rose struggles and frets and whines and cries and begs and pleads. And we wish it would all just end. But it won't.
  10. He does suck. But, but -- he's tough! he's gritty! he's a vet! clutchclutchclutchclutch If he was 17 inches shorter we might have a David Eckstein situation on our hands. (Jesus, what if he won NBA Finals MVP honors?!) Ick, then we'd be forced to, like, compliment him & stuff. I would be like being a Cardinals fan :P
  11. Actually this is only partially true. Prior has options left but his clock has expired. He could be optioned to the minors but he'd have to clear revocable major league waivers. So it's possible he won't be able to be demoted? Ouch. I would imagine some club would pick him up on waivers. He's not making superstar money. That's rather sucky. From what he said, it's revocable waivers, which means the Cubs can pull him back if somebody claims him. It typically is courtesy to not make a claim on those type of players because the other team knows that the Cubs will just pull him back and keep him, but that's not always the case. Seems like the Cards or Stros would claim him, if only to stop us from putting him @ Iowa.... Plus they could use the pitching help.

  14. ...or I could just take the time to know what I'm talking about before posting, heh 8-)
  15. Hey, I ignore goony's posts. Apparently you ignore my posts as well :D I ignore all kinds of things besides posts, too. :D
  16. No, it wouldn't. The Cubs can shuttle him between the big leagues and the minors all season if they wanted to. Ahhh, my bad  I didn't think that was the way options worked.
  17. Teams aren't abandoning FA, but let's face it, the draft provides much more value for the money. It's football, so as a GM you need to decide whether you want to pay rookie money for a fresh body with tons of potential, or pay outrageous dollars for a worn-down body who is nearly sure to decline in production.
  18. Was Wade Miller able to maintain his velocity beyond the 1st two innings? He was making minor league rehab starts last year where he would touch 87-89 and a maybe flirt with 90 once or twice and by the 3rd end up around 84-85. It appeared he was. This also falls under the category of "all things being equal." In fact, even if Miller's velocity does drop during games, the Cubs will figure that he'll "know how to pitch" without it. I'm not saying that's right or wrong; it's just what they'll figure. And don't discount the minor-league option that Guzman has. I understand all this, but don't you think it would be more wise to give Guzman a chance with the big boys first, before just burning that last option? If they send him down right off, then the next time they bring him up it's for good or gone. I also think Prior has a place in this argument. Even if Miller were traded, Mark might be able to progress enough to be ready after maybe 3 Guzman starts. That would buy a little breathing room to consider a Miller trade in my mind.
  19. I just don't see Miller having the kind of clout to hold back a superior youngster. There's no desperation to keep Miller. He was a castoff when we got him. A safe gamble that cost us little. If Guzman's better, than Miller should be tossed to the wind or traded or whatever. No biggie.
  20. The Brewers also raise their ticket prices for Cub games.
  21. Trouble is, now that Briggs has made the situation public and nasty, teams will really try to fleece us in a trade. To hell with that. Actually, to hell with Briggs. Let him rot. Don't want to play, PLUS want to ruin our chances to get value for you? Fine, sit and wither away at home while real men play football. If I were Angelo, I'd let Briggs sit all year, then franchise him again next year.
  22. I think he'll play for the Bears. He's done the Bears no favors as far as helping with trade value, so I think the Bears will call his bluff. Not sure about the ultimate resolution, but yeah I see no reason Angelo won't simply keep the franchise tag on him and just let him rot for awhile. In the meantime, I wouldn't be suprised to see the Bears draft OLB fairly high, perhaps with the #37. I've never seen Angelo back down easily on a player's demands. If Briggs/Drew are thinking Jerry wouldn't dare let him sit out, I would highly suggest they reconsider.
  23. Yeah, I'm not quite comfortable that Pie can handle the load.
  24. Good choice. You won't be dissapointed. Well, I'm getting a free DVR, free HBO/Skinemax for 3 months, and $10 off a month for 10 months. The switch is just going to be weird because I am so used to the channels on Dish Network. Oh well. Wow, they're giving away free DVRs now? I feel left out
