Who do you guys think should win the Heisman?
dew1679666265 replied to cubsfan5150's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
6 of the last 7 Heisman winners have been QB's. The only non-QB to win was Reggie Bush in 2005. I guess that shows how little I've been paying attention to the Heisman the last few years. Still, it would be hard to argue that another QB has been a better college QB than Tebow this year. That doesn't mean he will or won't be a good pro QB but his college numbers against very good competition are undeniable. Tebow's job is made far easier by having complete freaks surrounding him (Percy Harvin, Cornelius Ingram, Andre Caldwell, etc). McFadden doesn't have nearly the same arsenal around him (Felix Jones and Marcus Monk may be the only pro prospect skill position players getting regular PT - maybe an Arkasas fan can help me out). McFadden is also facing similar competition with the far inferior talent surrounding him and is excelling immensely. McFadden deserves it and earned it more so than any other player in college football. -
I was watching ESPN when they were talking about this. Apparently, he found a loophole. A college coach is only allowed to visit a recruit's home once. But Osborne can visit himself while he is interim coach, and then when he names the new coach, the new coach can go back and visit that same recruit. Pretty smart. Plus, he's Tom Osborne. The name alone carries weight with athletes. Maybe not as much as my generation (mid 20s) and older, but still a good bit of weight I'd say. I think this is a good move.

Exactly. This deal puts Woody in the closer role and allows the two likely better relievers - Howry and Marmol - to fill in the most important portions of the game. Had we not re-signed Wood and put Marmol or Howry in the closer role, we would have, at best, a young pitcher coming in critical portions of the game. I'm much more comfortable seeing Howry or Marmol enter in the 7th with the bases loaded and a one-run lead. Excellent deal. It's a lot of money, but it's just one year and if he's healthy he'll make it worth it. Wuertz? Had we not re-signed Woody, I might have actually been in favor of Wuertz moving into the closer role. Like Kerry, I'm a little uncomfortable putting a guy with just a 2:1 K:BB ratio in critical positions with little room for error. But, I think he could be very good in the role of coming in with nobody on. Woody's just a better version of Wuertz, thus I have no problem with the one-year deal.

I kind of agree on them being too cautious in the second OT. I understand the reasoning and I don't think it was a terrible decision because Seiber's a good kicker, but they probably should have been a little more agressive. Speaking of being too cautious, I utterly despise prevent defense. For some strange reason, John Chavis (UT D-coordinator) insisted on running it during Kentucky's final scoring drive in regulation. We were having success in the first half by being aggressive and pressuring Woodson and as the second half progressed the defensive scheme got less and less agressive. Not coincedintally, UK's offense kept getting better. Prevent is worthless unless there are just a couple minutes left in the game and you're up by a couple of scores. Otherwise, go with what works.

Tennessee can beat LSU. A few weeks ago I would have laughed at myself for saying that, but now I believe it. If LSU shows up and plays well the entire game (which they've really only done once this season - against VT), they'll kill us. Otherwise, as long as the Vols are focused and play well, it should be a great game. It won't be quite as sweet LSU fans, but here's hoping for a small bit of payback for 2001.

South Carolina is clearly one of the best SEC teams this season. That said, losing to a ranked Clemson team 23-21 is aboslute evidence that the SEC is an inferior football conference. I don't know if you're being sarcastic about SC being one of the best SEC teams this season(quite sure of the sarcasm in the following sentence), but Meph not too long ago was laughing off people claiming SC wasn't a good team. I guess since SC beat Georgia 3 months ago, they get to keep their status as studs despite their 5 game losing streak(They're just losses after all) And I was never calling the SEC an inferior football conference, just not the world beaters that you and Tebow4Life claim them to be. SC is very similar to Arkansas, a good to very good team that doesn't have a QB. Blake Mitchell sucks and Chris Smelley is very inconsistent. They had a good running back (Corey Boyd), good receivers, decent line and a very good defense. They just didn't have a QB.

The ironic thing is, had Tennessee lost Saturday, we'd be looking at either the Music City Bowl or the Independence Bowl at best. Now, I see no way we fall further than the Peach Bowl with a loss - more likely the Cotton Bowl, though. I'm curious about your feelings on Saturday's game by the way. Were you able to watch it?

Our margin of victory over Georgia wasn't enough to make us second best? Too bad. :D Doesn't matter to me how it happened, we have a shot at the SEC title and I fully believe we can beat LSU (though it's hard to say we will). Even if we don't win, it's a good step forward for this team - which will be much, much better next year if we can replace Ainge and find a consistent pass rusher. Unfortunately for the 2008 Volunteers both Georgia and Florida look poised for National Championship runs in '08. They're both going to be preseason top fives and Florida's probably going to be the preseason number one. The East is going to be ridiculously good next year. I tend to think we'll play very well, but likely finish third next year and then make a serious run in 09 after Tebow, Harvin, Stafford and Massoquoi are gone. That year, Eric Berry, Brent Vinson, Dennis Rogan, Lennon Creer, Gerald Jones, B.J. Coleman and quite a few others will just be hitting their junior year. By the way, every one of those players are freshmen this year and have shown they have immense potential (except Coleman who's redshirting, but Cutcliffe has compared his "football smarts" to Peyton). I think we can beat one of UGA or UF next year, though. Probably UGA.

That was one heck of a game. Both teams played great at different points and I was genuinely scared much of the second half that the streak would end. Woodson really impressed me and I'm more certain now than ever that he and Ainge are two of the best QBs in the nation. There might be one or two better than them, but that's it. The personal foul penalty crap in OT was absolutely horrific. If the refs were correct in their ruling, then the rule needs to be changed immediately. If they were wrong in their interpretation, they should be suspended immediately. It's ridiculous that 3-4 seconds should make nearly ripping somebody's head off illeagally okay and tossing a football a few yards not okay. Either both personal fouls should have been administered or neither. The way it happened nearly screwed Tennessee in a great football game and that's awful. And finally I've got to say it, Tennessee is going to the SEC Championship game. All those idiots calling for Fulmer's head are about to be shut up for quite some time. The road wasn't pretty at all at times (the blowout losses to UF and Bama and the loss to Cal), but the fact is we're one win away from an SEC Championship and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. And we're facing what has become a very beatable LSU team. They're still one of the most talented teams in the nation and could demolish us if they show up to play, but I'm not at all convinced they will. Tennessee Volunteers - SEC East Champions baby! =D>

What a bunch of idiots. Just allow three teams from one conference if there aren't enough eligible teams in the top-14 if you stick by the two per conference rule. These are supposed to be the best teams going not the top 2 from every conference. But we have to be fair about things soccer. We can't be hurting people's wallets by excluding some just because others might have been a little better. [-X   Sadly true.

the only rulings are: If UGA gets to the SEC-C and UGA doesn't beat LSU they'll fall in the polls and they may not be ranked higher than Florida after that game. It'd be close. Keep in mind UGA is not in line for the SEC-C. It's Tennessee right now. And if Tennessee makes the SEC Championship and if they win it (two big ifs), that settles the BCS spots in my opinion. UT obviously gets one and LSU would almost definitely get the other. So, I guess Florida fans are going to be rooting for Kentucky on Saturday. :D

Yup I do. Do you really want Floridas D to face 1 of the top rushing teams in the country? We can keep your offense off the field. You arent ranked number 1 in points scored, rushing yards, or passing yards. Please put your magical numbers out there that show Florida is the best offense in the nation. Cause the stats disagree The stupid stats disagree. Points Per Game - Schedule Rank - Team 1. 48.0 - 153 - Hawaii 2. 45.8 - 101 - Kansas 3. 44.2 - 122 - Boise State 4. 43.4 - 69 - Oklahoma 5. 42.9 - 9 - Florida Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Running up the score heavily affects PPG. Can you just admit you hate Florida and the SEC. Margin of victory this year: Hawaii: 24.5 Kansas: 31.6 Boise State: 25.9 Oklahoma: 25 Florida: 17.6 And you're accusing Florida of running up the score. I don't know if Florida runs up the score or not, but those stats prove nothing. Florida plays in the SEC, and, thereby, won't get the opportunity to run up the score many times. They'll play close games and lower their margin of victory. Heck, they have three losses to lower their margin of victory. You can only run up the score when you're up big, and, generally, you're not up big against fellow SEC teams. florida dropped 59 on tennessee and 51 on south carolina Tennessee's secondary was absolutely horrid then and still isn't that great. There are very good athletes in it, but two of them are true freshmen and one has no past experience in Division IA (JUCO transfer). Putting up 59 on us at the time wasn't that special. South Carolina, though, is very impressive.

dew1679666265 replied to cubsfan5150's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
McFadden and there's no question in my mind. Not only is he easily the best player in college football, but he's putting up great stats without even a poor passing game. Teams know McFadden is going to run the ball and Arkansas isn't even going to try to throw the ball, but he still racks up the yardage. If McFadden doesn't win it, the Heisman will have lost what little credibility it still has. -
I wouldn't hold my breath. To whom do you think they'll lose to? They're better than any team they will face in the regular season or could potentially face in the SECCG, sans possibly UF (I'm not sure if UF in the SECCG is still possible, but if it is, I'd rather not see them again). I know they've looked like crap for the last month +, but they've played down to most of the teams. IF they minimize their errors and play a complete game, I have full confidence they'll run the table to the NCG. If both Tennessee and Georgia lose another SEC game, I'm pretty sure Florida heads to the SEC Championship. Both have to lose, though, and I don't see that happening.

Tennessee has had a long standing policy to always play at least one tough non-conference game a year. In the recent past we've played UCLA, Cal, Notre Dame and Miami. We go to UCLA next year and then get them in Neyland in 09. We also have Oklahoma, NC State, Oregon and were talking to Virginia Tech for future years. It's nice to see the Vols take on legitimately good teams from other conferences, yet still have some breathers in between tough SEC opponents. - As Meph has mentioned, Florida plays Miami, Hawaii, and at Florida State in 2008. - Auburn picks up a home and away with West Viriginia in 2008 and 2009. (Auburn played a home and away with USC just a couple, few years ago) - Tennessee plays home and away with UCLA in 2008 and 2009; they'll also play NC State - Georgia plays Georgia Tech every season - South Carolina plays Clemson. - LSU played Virginia Tech this year. - Alabama played Florida State this year "at a neutral site" in Jacksonville. Some have suggested that all of the SEC's out of conference games are at home, but the SEC does play on the road against some formidable opponents. (Cuse is going to let me have it if West Virginia beats Auburn next year ) Yeah, the SEC may play less major opponents than some other conferences but it's not as drastic as some make it out to be. Plus, other conferences play their own patsies, so there's really not that much difference out of conference.

When he reminds us all that he'll wear KOSUKE on his MLB jersey. Why exactly is that? I know Ichiro does it, but you didn't see Hideo Nomo with "Hideo" on his jersey. So Taguchi's jersey doesn't say "So." Chan Ho Park's jersey doesn't say "Chan." Did Tuffy Rhodes' jersey say "Tuffy?" It kind of bothers me that Ichiro did it and this guy is supposedly doing it too. This guy is doing it because another player (can't recall who) warned him what Fukudome could be confused for in English. If I understand right, he has Fukudome on his jersey in Japan, but will change it for translation reasons in the States. As stated earlier in the thread, it was some friendly advice from Alex Ochoa, who told him the surname "FUKUDOME" wouldn't quite translate to American culture for obvious reasons. Many thanks. I couldn't remember who it was that told him that and I was too lazy to go back and check.

You're assuming an SEC East title for Florida and that's far from a sure thing my friend. I really doubt Tennessee loses to Vandy so Kentucky will have to knock us off for you to have a chance. Could happen, but not a certainty.

I don't understand why everyone thinks we need to add to our bullpen. Re-sign Woody, and I think we're pretty much set in the bullpen. It seems that everybody is under the impression that Dempster was terrible and we need a closer. The truth is, though, Marmol or Wood (preferrably Kerry) would be fine in that role and just promote Wuertz. Oh well. Hopefully Hendry doesn't agree with the general consesus on this one.

The frustrating thing for Colts fans has to be that if they just go ahead and kick the field goal on fourth down without trying to run a play, a kick equally as bad is good. I have no idea why they tried to go for it down 2 with under 2 minutes to go and the Charger offense being completely inept tonight. Especially since SD had no timeouts. I'm not convinced they would have actually snapped the ball. I think they were just trying to draw San Diego offsides for the first down, and if that didn't happen I think they would have called a time-out and gone for the FG. There's absolutely no way they actually go for it on 4th down when a chip shot FG would have won it. You may be right, but I would have just gone ahead and kicked it. Make it as easy as possible and don't try to get cute. The SD offense hadn't done anything, especially through the air. I would have just kicked it too, but maybe they wanted to try to steal a first down because they were nervous about missing the kick because of the wet field conditions. Or perhaps the thinking was that they wanted to milk more time so San Diego wouldn't have any time left for another return touchdown. Possible on both counts, but you have to have faith in your units. Do the smart thing and let the rest fall into place. You're paying Vinatieri to make these field goals and then you can squib the ball to keep it out of Sproles' hands.
