  1. Coming into this season, he was in the final year of his deal. I don't remember hearing that they extended him yet, but I have to believe it's either happened or will happen. They haven't been this good since the Tim Couch era. Thanks. I know Ping is down on Brooks but for him to have the level of success he's had at UK while competing with the SEC heavyweights is something. I was never crazy about Brooks, but he's done a terrific job this year. The true test for him will be next season, though, when he doesn't have such a senior-laden team. UK loses Woodson, Jacob Tamme, Keenan Burton, Rafael Little (I think) and Wesley Woodyard to graduation after this year. Not sure who's in the hopper to replace Woodson at QB, but whoever it is Randy Sanders will have to work wonders to get him to play nearly as well as Woodson has this season.
  2. The frustrating thing for Colts fans has to be that if they just go ahead and kick the field goal on fourth down without trying to run a play, a kick equally as bad is good. I have no idea why they tried to go for it down 2 with under 2 minutes to go and the Charger offense being completely inept tonight. Especially since SD had no timeouts.
  3. With Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin and Zook's players. I feel obligated to bring this up anytime Meyer's title is mentioned since Weis has been absolutely roasted for only winning with Ty's players (ignoring that a good portion of the ND depth chart is still Ty's, would be more if he'd bothered recruiting for his last two offseasons). Speaking of, Ty's only good season at ND's helm came with Bob Davie's players, yet another thing that is conveniently ignored when this discussion comes up. I'm not trying to say Weis deserves outlandish praise or anything of the sort. I'm just saying anyone who says ND is hypocritical for firing Ty and keeping Weis is ignoring about a hundred other facts. I agree that Weis shouldn't be fired. I'm not convinced Ty should have been fired yet - I think he should have been given another year - and I don't think Weis deserves to get canned. My main point was that the comparison to Urban Meyer is invalid. Meyer's recruits have also been very good players for the most part, Florida has yet to have a truly bad season - this year's three losses is their worst under Meyer. You mentioned he won the title with mostly Zook's players and that's true, but I guarantee you they don't sniff a national title without Tim Tebow - a Meyer recruit.

  5. Weis has two top 10 recruiting classes already and the no. 1 ranked class for 2008. Ty had one top 10 class out of three and his last two were the two worst in ND history. Weis has shown a willingness to change assistant coaches when they show they aren't capable. Ty refused to fire Kent Baer, his defensive coordinator, no matter how absurdly bad the defense was. Ty didn't play Jeff Samardzija for two years. He played Ryan Grant over Julius Jones in 2003 - Grant infamously had more carries than Jones in the Pitt game where Jones broke the ND record for rushing yards in a game. Weis has eight more years on his contract, so firing him would be financially irresponsible. (Stupid to give him the extension in the first place, I know.) By the way, where's the bellyaching about Florida firing Ron Zook 2.5 years into his contract, with a better record than Willingham? Oh, Zook is white and Florida is currently winning so that makes it ok. Florida has been good since Urban Meyer took over and they never had a good year under Zook. Keep in mind, they won a national championship under Meyer. Weis has, granted, had less talent but hasn't won even a BCS bowl game. I'm not supporting Weis being fired, just that the comparison with Meyer is completely invalid. Also, Zook was the sacrificial lamb for a legend. Whoever followed Spurrier had to be just as successful or he would have been fired. That's how it goes following a legend, fair or not. Are you trying to say that Bob Davie isnt a legend? No, he's trying to say that George O'Leary isn't a legend. I keep forgetting O'Leary was their coach for a couple days or so.

  7. If Tennessee loses out, Phil Fulmer may be looking for another job. And if Fulmer is, David Cutcliffe would also become available as well as John Chavis. I doubt we lose out, though. Wow....imagine Michigan, Tennessee, Nebraska and UCLA all looking for coaches. The coaching carousel could be crazy. I doubt at this point Fulmer gets fired, but if he does I have no idea where Mike Hamilton will look for a replacement. His only two hires, Bruce Pearl and Todd Rollings (baseball coach), came from smaller schools and I don't think either were I-A. I tend to think it would be somebody younger that could re-envigorate the fans. Sort of like Pearl.

  9. Thanks to the Campbell for Losman bungle and Dallas Clark being hurt, I now need Bryan Fletcher to have a big night. I think I'm screwed.

  11. Me too. Tom Brady has a bye week this week (obviously), so I had to go find a QB. Well, most of the week I had Jason Campbell (19 points today) but cut him to sign JP Losman who had a better matchup this week and had been doing better. So what happens? Of course Campbell puts up 19 points and Losman puts up 5. And then, of course, Donovan McNabb goes crazy for my opponent and posts 27 points. Fantasy football sucks. At least you didn't bench Derek Anderson for Losman :-& #-o Ouch. That sucks.

  13. That Tennessee/Vandy game will be interesting. It should be a mismatch, but it depends largely on the Tennessee team that decides to show up. If the Vols that dominated Georgia and Arkansas show, it won't be close to a contest. But, if the team that lost to Cal, Florida, Bama and did their best to give away the South Carolina game shows, then it'll be very close. By the way, the Arkansas win was awesome. I was at the game and as we left, we weren't sure McFadden had hit 100 yards. He ended up with 117, but the Tennessee defense just completely controlled that Razorback offensive line. The only thing about the game that concerned me was Erik Ainge struggling again. He wasn't nearly as bad as against South Carolina, but he still looked a little off with some of his passes. He's got to get that worked out before Kentucky or I'm going to be really worried.
  14. White's a great spread option QB. His problem always has been that he isn't very good throwing the ball - whether the problem is staring down a receiver or just simply not being accurate. He's perfect for Rich Rodriguez's system (and thus a great college QB, I guess), but is also a perfect candidate to move to wide receiver in the NFL, though. By the way, this game has turned great. Too bad it ended on an intercepted hail mary. Louisville looked awful on that final drive.
  15. I am mortally terrified of McFadden and Felix Jones Saturday. The Tennessee defense has struggled more defending the pass, but they've also had issues tackling this season which just begs for a big day from the Hog running game. The defense is going to have to play at least as well as they did against Georgia, and possibly better, to slow down the running duo. I'd put 8-9 in the box and beg them to have Casey Dick throw to Marcus Monk. If they beat us that way, so be it. Also, the offense absolutely has to put up at least 30. I don't think we'll shut down McFadden and Jones completely, so Ainge and the offense have got to give the D some cushion. With SEC East destiny hanging in the balance, Tennessee pulls out a hard fought win 31-24.
  16. I have Addai on one of my teams and Wayne on the other. I also have Watson on one of my teams (the same team as Wayne), but I think he's a risky start because he may not be back to full strength if he's back from his injury. You should be sitting pretty my friend. Full strength or not, I have a feeling if an offensive player sees the field in this game, he'll get you decent points. I've only got one team and I'm starting Brady, Stallworth and Dallas Clark on it. I like my chances this week.
  17. Both teams are eerily similar in their positional strengths and weaknesses. True, the Pats are big and physical and the Colts are smaller and more of a finesse offense, but both have great passing games, good running games and decent defenses. I haven't seen much that tells me one is much better than the other, thus I have to take the home team. Colts in the dome, 45-42. If your fantasy team has any offensive player for either team, start them.
  18. I'm pretty surprised to see Tennessee back in the top 25 after looking so bad against South Carolina. Oh well, I'll take it. And it's nice to be back in control of the East for now, though. :D Can't get complacent, though, as we still have to get past Arkansas, Vandy and Kentucky. And that game at UK really worries me. I'm afraid Woodson will make our young secondary look sillier than they already do.
  19. Despite their #6 ranking, South Carolina is not one of the better teams in the SEC. They're a little better than middle of the pack, but they shot up the rankings because they beat an overrated Georgia team, their only loss came at LSU and they have Steve Spurrier as their head coach. That's it. Vandy's a decent team that upset an above average team, what about the Commodores this year makes you think otherwise? They blew out Richmond and Eastern Michigan, beat Ole Miss by a couple TDs, and now beat South Carolina. Are those awesome wins? No, but they did what a decent team is supposed to do. The weakest teams in the SEC this year are likely Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Ole Miss beat Memphis and stayed within a couple TDs of Missouri (though I don't think it was ever really in doubt). They're only embarrassing losses have come in the SEC. Mississippi State has beaten Tulane, Gardner Webb and UAB pretty well and then got blown out by the good non-conference team they played - WVU. Pretty much what you can expect out of a slightly below average team. SEC schools are performing well out of conference, so they're given more slack out of it. That's how polls and public perception work. You don't like it, push for a playoff system where polls and perception don't matter.
  20. Wofford, Northwestern and Minnesota never entered my argument. I argued that Michigan lost to a Division 1AA team and Wisconsin barely beat another Division 1AA team (the Citadel) and Central Florida (a team I'm rooting for but one that a top Big Ten team ought to beat handily). I'm saying the perception of top Big Ten teams (Wisconsin and Michigan, not Minnesota and Northwestern - where did they come from anyway?) and top teams from other conferences has been hurt because of narrow wins and losses to poor non-conference opponents. Thus, when they lose in conference, it's seen as them being bad, not the other team being good. And Michigan didn't just have a bad game, one of the most storied programs in the history of the NCAA lost to a Division I-AA team. And again, where in the world did Northwestern and Minnesota enter into this?
  21. Yeah, the Sun Belt is pretty awful. FIU and FAU should improve at some point and MTSU seems to keep nearly improving, but always falter. I'd probably be all for at least some Southern Conference teams moving to 1A.
  22. for the reading impaired. i said nothing of non-conference play. discuss I think he's saying that the big 10 beating up on itself doesn't mean as much as the SEC beating up on itself because the big 10 teams lost to terrible teams out of conference. It's not like those losses don't count anymore. Exactly, that's the point Meph and I have been trying to get across.
  23. What's with Wofford beating upstart 1AA teams? I think it's kinda funny that they've beaten the two 1AA teams who beat and nearly beat top 1A teams. woffords losses are to elon and ncsu. elon's losses are to appy state and usf. they lost to usf by fifteen statistically the southern conference is actually better than conference usa. Interesting, do we promote the Southern Conference to 1A? :D
  24. What's with Wofford beating upstart 1AA teams? I think it's kinda funny that they've beaten the two 1AA teams who beat and nearly beat top 1A teams.
  25. for the reading impaired. i said nothing of non-conference play. discuss The point I was trying to make is that the non-conference embarrasments suffered by Big XII, Big Ten and Big East teams have shaped the perceptions of them now. After Texas nearly lost to Arkansas State and UCF, it's hard to say K-State's great because they went to town on them. Same with the teams that have demolished Wisconsin - the win loses luster after the Badgers barely took out the Citadel. The SEC on the other hand, hasn't had a top team lose or nearly lose to a non-conference team they should have demolished. Thus, when Kentucky or another SEC team plays an LSU or a Florida close, the top team is given the benefit of the doubt. Had Florida barely squeaked by Western Kentucky, Auburn's win wouldn't have looked so good. Hopefully this makes more sense. I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well though.
