  1. I think this deserves its own thread, but if not it can be merged. Not earth-shattering news, but I wonder if we could finagle Haren in some way - DLee + prospect(s) for Haren?
  2. When Vitters is ready, he'll take over third. I don't really see much of a realistic scenario where either Lee or Starlin are a regular third baseman. As has been mentioned, just not enough power potential. If everybody pans out, the likely 2014 infield is Vitters (3B), HJ Lee (SS), Starlin (2B), ? (1B).
  3. Aren't the Phillies looking to dump salary by trading Werth? I was thinking that was the case and, if it is, that would make a Silva/Werth trade very much defeat the purpose.
  4. The idea behind trading Byrd would be to start either Colvin or Kosuke in CF. It's not either's best position, obviously, but it would fulfill the desire to get Colvin full playing time and relieving the OF jam a bit. But also creates the problem of having a much worse OF. Right. I don't subscribe to the view, I was just explaining it.

  6. And just so I don't let SpongeWorthy down :-) : This is pretty irrelevant when considering CJ, but it would have been nice to have Pola around to help develop the young RBs we have behind Johnson.
  7. If you're talking in extremes, I don't disagree. Guys with patience but no power will get pitches grooved to them and, at best, will bloop them around the shallow part of the outfield. It'd take a four players not making an out just to get one run. But, as you said, the power hitters can score more quickly and pitchers will start to try to avoid the zone.
  8. Lane just needs to stay outside the borders of the state of Tennessee at this point. I understand the move by Pola somewhat, but it seems like he could have waited another year, let CJ run wild, and then get an offensive coordinator position at a school that doesn't have sanctions against it.
  9. Gary Matthews is available once again as he opted out of his minor league deal with the Reds.
  10. Posturing or are the Cubs not as close as we thought to dealing Lilly? There are also tidbits on Golden and Z in the story.
  11. Bulluck to the Giants. Good move if he's healthy. Rams in "serious" pursuit of TO
  12. I'm not quite as big into the camp of devaluing relievers, but this is interesting: Mariano Rivera total WAR over 16 seasons: 36.0 Javier Vazquez total WAR over 13 seasons: 52.6 That's not really fair. WAR doesn't include leverage... and it is based on FIP, a metric which Rivera seems to have shown somewhat of an ability to outperform, and Vazquez has inexplicably shown an ability to perennially underperform. Yeah, leverage is a big reason I value closers more highly than many. Your points make sense, I just found it interesting that a no-doubt Hall of Fame closer would have a lower career WAR than an above average starting pitcher.
  13. Yep. 96 PAs this year, .611 OPS. And now released Hadn't heard that. Ya he was released when they activated Brian Roberts off DL today. Ah, makes sense.

  16. You're on the right track with the thinking here. On a macro level, each team only gets 27 outs per game and over the course of a 162 game season they will make that many outs in each game. However, on a micro level, the goal of each hitter should be to do as much in between those outs as possible. A team gets three outs per inning either way, but if they can get guys on base in between those outs, runs are going to score.

  18. It would be pretty hard to give up less than Hendry has in trades. The list of players who have not fallen apart after leaving the Cubs is pretty small. Hendry's bad trades have usually involved acquiring the wrong player rather than giving up the wrong player. Yeah, I pointed out before probably the best players Hendry's traded away were Nolasco, Pie and Wuertz. Considering the players he's gotten in trades, that's pretty good. However, you're also right that he has a tendency to target the wrong type of player – both through trades and free agency (Miles, Izturis, etc).
  19. No idea where to put this, but I think it's interesting. So I'll put it here. Fangraphs analysis on Colvin
  20. That's all I could find offhand. I know there were a number more, however.
  21. I understand that there may be a personal relationship, my point was their professional interactions have been very limited. The likelihood is that the professional interactions have been limited, but that doesn't negate that there is a history between the two. If they get along on a personal level, there's a higher chance that Gonzalez will have an interest in the Cubs' job – and I think that's what davearm's point was.
  22. I still think hes the Braves next manager That's got to be the most likely scenario, but the fact that he has a history with Hendry should be a good sign. There's a history, but Hendry spent what, 2 years in Florida back in the early 90's? It's not like they have a long professional relationship. In the ESPN story, Levine referred to it as a "long and personal relationship." The inference from what he wrote is that the relationship began in Florida and has continued since. Gonzalez to the Braves is still the likely scenario, though.
  23. Hendry has pursued him in the past and considered him over Bradley in that offseason. The "sources" have said it's Dunn's defense, not offense, that has kept Hendry from pursuing him more heavily.
  24. He's been a pretty big advocate in the past (through Yahoo! writings and his HOF speech) of "small-ball" and the very traditional viewpoints on the game. That has been accompanied by some really strange managerial decisions in the minors (in a TN game a couple years ago he had his 3 and 4 hitters attempt sac bunts after the inning opened with eight straight balls).
  25. Last year's injury (or this year's if his struggles weren't a carry over from the same injury) was the first that significantly hampered his performance, though. Teams will, at least, use that in negotiations.
