  1. From Bruce's blog: Strange note about Figgins there, I hadn't heard anything to this point about interest from the Cubs (since the offseason, that is).
  2. Shocking that a team isn't going to play 20M plus for our 4th outfielder. For what it's worth, he shouldn't be our 4th outfielder.
  3. Because they don't need to eat any of Lilly's contract to trade him, but they do Fukudome. Right. That is pretty obvious. All I am saying is the Cubs will maximize their haul if they sent money along with Lilly. I'm not sure how much it would matter, though. He's well worth the money he'll make in the second half and his contract expires at the end of the year. It's not likely to be a burden for a team, so I don't know if the Cubs paying it would offer that much more incentive to throw in a better player. If he was signed through next year, however, I definitely think it would behoove them to pay a large portion of his contract.
  4. You can run Saunders out there every fifth day, but he's not going to give you very many quality starts. He's got a career 4.69 xFIP and it's gotten progressively worse each of the past three seasons (4.65 in 2008, 4.80 in 2009 and 4.94 so far this year). He's also struck out just 5.1 batters per nine in his career and hasn't been above 4.89 K/9 in the past three seasons. He's also making almost $4 mil this year, so he's much cheaper than Haren but Fangraphs has him being worth $800,000 for his career (for what that's worth). The reliever isn't particularly impressive, but the other guys seem to have at least decent upside. I wonder about how much, though, since the only thing Dipoto talked about was how they could win games.
  5. I had no idea they could do that. I don't really see a point to it, except to make a statement about how pissed they are at Kiffin and USC.
  6. Dave Cameron of Fangraphs writes about Haren's value around the league: Could this have been the best the DBacks could do for him?
  7. Interesting . . . For all the "Nats are asking for the moon for Dunn" rumors out there, this would be a really disappointing return if I'm a Washington fan. Jackson's ok, but nowhere near the Floyd/Danks/Beckham type rumors being thrown around.
  8. I tend to think the only difference would be perception. It's going to look bad if a big market team like the Cubs promote some unknown minor league manager (no matter how good he is) to be the new ML manager. If that same coach spends a couple or three seasons on the ML bench, perception among the casual fans and media will be much better (he's seen the ML game, he's learned under such and such veteran manager, etc, would be the explanations). However, that perception issue likely won't be there for Ryno – simply because he's Ryne Sandberg. People know the name, they're familiar with him and they'll assume he knows the game and will be able to manage at the ML level. As far as an actual, real benefit – I don't think there is a big one. He might get to know the personnel better (which is why promoting from the minors is a good idea, I think) by coaching first, but I can't imagine his overall philosophy would change from it.
  9. He could just be talking about winning percentage as a way of selling this trade to Diamondbacks fans. However, if wins and losses were indeed serious considerations in making this trade, he should be fired on the spot. That's possible, since a large number of people will be impressed by pitcher wins. This just highlights how horrendous a trade this was that the GM has to talk about Joe Saunders and Pat Corbin's W/L record and winning percentage in selling the deal.
  10. These comments bring competency into question. Holy cow:
  11. You probably heard this, but Raymond Cotton transferred. I'd say that helped convince Nutt to take a shot with Masoli. It'll be interesting if Masoli gets into a game to see him run a non-spread option offense.
  12. That was my question: is Dipoto competent? I have no idea, but would assume he was careful to collect all possible offers and choose the best one. If that's the case, then it appears Haren's market value is far below where it probably should be and where most on this board (myself included) thought it would be. Apparently they like Skaggs and Corbin more than most people do. They could definitely see something in the two that makes them more sure they'll pan out and be very good pitchers, but with the information we currently have it appears to be a pretty awful deal for them.
  13. The PTBNL is apparently Tyler Skaggs, not the Angels' top prospect but the 40th pick in Anaheim's 2009 draft. That makes a former first and second round pick from that draft plus Rafael Rodriguez and Saunders. Apparently Arizona likes Skaggs and Corbin more than most, so they may be viewed as the centerpieces of the deal.
  14. In an NL-only league that scores R, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB and AVG, I was offered this deal: I get Adam Dunn Corey Hart He gets Matt Kemp Derrek Lee The trade is contingent on Hart being healthy, but if he's healthy it's tempting. Zips likes DLee to bounce back and thinks Hart will regress a bit. I could use help in homers (last in the league), RBI, BB and AVG. My current OFs are (4 starting OF spots plus 2 utilities) Chris Coghlan, Angel Pagan, Matt Kemp, Andres Torres, Chris Young, Kosuke and Nyjer Morgan. I have Travis Ishikawa and Pablo Sandoval to play first (along with DLee). I'm thinking about doing it if Hart is ok since I'm not as sure about DLee's return as Zips appears to be. Thoughts?
  15. That's what I would have thought before the Haren trade as well. I would have laughed if I was told Haren would be traded for a package including a 30 year old pitcher with an xFIP close to 4.7 who strikes out around 5 batters per game. I'd be stunned if they were looking to spin Haren off and if they valued Lee that highly, but I was stunned they got him for a package built around Joe Saunders as well. i can guarantee you there are a couple of teams that are pissed off that the d'backs only got that in return because they could have easily trumped the angels' offer without too much damage to their system. Probably. I never know how much these trades tell us about the GM giving the player away for very little or if it tells us more about what the "real" value of the player on the market is.
  16. While at Tennessee, Lane called his own plays but still had Jim Chaney with the official title of offensive coordinator. I'm sure there are more responsibilities that go along with that title, but Lane's OC isn't completely in control of the offense either. Even without playcalling duties, I think this is a step up for Pola. He was the RB coach only in Nashville, but will have added responsibilities at USC. However, I still think he could have waited a year, let CJ have another huge season and parlayed that into a better OC job at a school not on sanctions and, perhaps, where the head coach doesn't call plays.
  17. That would be the most likely scenario and the one that makes the most sense.
  19. Right, but a 4.16 xFIP and an 8.72 K/9 from a cheap 28-year-old pitcher is still pretty solid. Listening to offers is perfectly fine, but I'd want a pretty good deal to trade him.
  20. According to Jon Paul Morosi the Angels think he is. And he could be if their scouts see something fixable in his problems this year. Are there multiple positions the Angels could upgrade at? I was thinking their only real opening was first, but I'm not that familiar with their current roster.
  21. Haren was just traded for a package built around a 30 year old pitcher with career 4.69 xFIP and 5.10 K/9. It all depends on how much the Angels value DLee and whether they think they can fix whatever his struggles have been this year. I wouldn't do a trade like that, but I wouldn't have traded Haren in the first place if I was Arizona.
  22. I've heard a couple times that they might intend to spin him off again for a big bat. I wouldn't trade him personally, but that's what I've heard.
  23. A tidbit from the Cubs' perspective:
  24. This isn't completely Lilly news, but I also didn't think it needed its own thread. Unless we get a considerable haul, I have no interest in dealing Gorz. He's cheap, fairly young and very productive. No reason to trade him unless somebody significantly overpays (or the Cubs simply believe he won't keep this pace up).
