  1. I agree it's not necessary and I'd tend to prefer he not be called up, but it's also not likely that he'd bust if he was called up. I hadn't seen the overall strikeout numbers, though, so thanks for pointing that out.
  2. He did play first base his junior year at Clemson but he would provide below average offensive production at first. Kinda like the 1B production this year. Or Hoffpauir in 2011. Remember the payroll will probably be lower. Cantu might be an interesting option. I still like the idea of signing Cantu to play first next year and then moving him to third base in 2012 if we bring in Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder.
  3. Would it make sense for the Rays to deal Upton for Colvin? Seems like it'd make more sense from their viewpoint to keep Upton in that scenario and just trade a pitcher for Lilly.
  4. I definitely agree I'd prefer an equally talented 1B or 2B. However, if the Rays would do a Lilly/Upton deal, I'd go ahead and make the trade and figure out what to do with all the outfielders after the trade. Upton would be our most talented outfielder and would have the biggest upside of any current outfielder on the roster. I'd make the trade as soon as I could and then work on dealing either Byrd or Kosuke (preferable if there's interest).
  5. I actually meant IsoD there (Isolated Discipline) but confused my letters. He's got really good both, though, for what it's worth. I always do that too, because I'm thinking it's Isolated Patience That's exactly what I did. I realized my screw-up when TT pointed out what IsoP was.

  7. That's a legit argument and I don't necessarily disagree. My main contention, I guess, was you appearing to disregard the Upton/Lilly swap because we had Byrd and Jackson waiting in the wings. I wouldn't turn down that trade because of any current OFs on our ML roster because there are ways to make it work.
  8. I'm not advocating calling Jackson up this season (or necessarily even next), but calling a prospect up quickly in and of itself is not rushing a prospect. If a prospect has no real holes in his swing/approach and dominates each level, continuing to promote him aggressively may not be a bad idea. However - and this is where the Cubs have struggled - aggressively promoting prospects with holes in their swings or poor approaches makes it more likely the player will bust. Going purely by the numbers, I don't know that aggressive promotion would really hurt Jackson. I haven't seen his swing, but he has a decent IsoP and has hit very well during his minor league stint.
  9. Why not, after an Upton for Lilly swap, trade Kosuke and then platoon Byrd and Colvin in right? Or just give Byrd right field full time? He's played 109 games there and, while UZR gets pretty inaccurate in smaller sample sizes, is a 13.2 UZR/150 defender there. It's not ideal, but his .845 OPS would be 5th in the NL among right fielders with at least 150 PAs. Let him play in right next year and then work on dealing him either at the deadline or in the 2011 offseason.
  10. He was 6th in WAR among all CFs in baseball in 2007 and 4th in WAR in 2008. He definitely dropped off last year, but he's on pace – as TT said – to be a 2.5 WAR player this year. He's not been as good the past two years, but 26 really isn't that old, meaning there's plenty of time for him to continue developing. A change of scenery might help as well. I wouldn't trade the moon for him, but Lilly for him seems fair.
  11. After his .894 OPS in 2007, he has kind of fallen off a cliff (.784, .686, .715 since) but he's only 25 (26 in August) and was an elite prospect (#2 in baseball in 2004). His past two BABIPs have been a bit lower than his career average as well (.334 career; .310 in 2009 and .290 this year). Defensively, he's very good according to UZR/150: 10.7 in LF and 5.5 in CF. He just lost an arbitration hearing before the year and is making $3 million this year. I'll admit it's more the elite prospect status that intrigues me about him, but I can definitely see the reasons we wouldn't have interest in him. My thinking is, if we can't get one or more current top prospect(s) for Lilly, I'd take Upton before a package of lower minors/upside guys.
  12. What would be your feelings on that deal, from the Cubs' perspective? I don't think Hendry will entertain it because of the logjam in the OF already and the organization's desire to get Colvin more PAs, but I still like Upton's upside and think he's be a good return for Lilly.
  13. Wasn't that Jason Bere? Or did he have a different special pitch?
  14. Wed have to include a lot more than Lilly to get Upton. Entirely possible, but Upton has posted OPS' of .784, .686 and .715 the past two and a half seasons. His only really good ML season was in 2007 when he posted an .894 OPS. His WAR has gone from 4.2 and 4.6 in 2007 and 2008 to 2.1 in 2009 and 1.3 so far this year. Since becoming a Cub (2007), Lilly's WAR has been 3.6, 2.7 and 3.7 (0.8 so far this year). Average WAR since 2007: Upton: 3.05 Lilly: 2.7 The main reason I have my doubts they'd have interest is that Upton is 25 (26 in August) and was an elite prospect coming up and Lilly would just be a half-season rental. However, if they really feel that Lilly could help them, I don't know that we'd have to give that much along with him.
  15. Any possibility of or interest in (or both) an Upton for Lilly type swap? I really have no idea how highly the Rays consider Upton's value right now or what the overall feeling on the board is about Upton. He was mentioned in the blurb about being available, though.
  16. Yeah, that's what I was getting at. I've always liked his potential, but moreso as a catcher than a 1st baseman. Especially now that he's sporting a minor league OPS south of .800. Still, you dont think hed be worth Xavier Nady even if we do pick up whatever we still owe him? This is Xavier Nade were talking about. I'm not saying don't trade for him - especially if we can get him for Nady. He just isn't as valuable as he was when the Braves traded him. Like Rob said, I might prefer a high upside arm in the lower minors, but Salty wouldn't be a bad gamble either.
  17. His salary for 2011 is $14.6 million. His 2012 salary is $16 million or his buyout is $2 million. There are five stipulations that make his 2012 salary guaranteed: His NTC is already irrelevant because he has 10/5 rights.
  18. I have no idea. They're apparently still trying to sort out who did the fighting and who was just there. It's a mess, but I've liked Dooley's handling of it so far. I agree. I really do like Dooley and his handling of the situation. Man, what a crappy offseason for Tennessee. Here's to Dooley riding out the storm. We're going to suck the next two years either way, so Dooley putting his foot down now is a good thing.

  21. Nobody's going to be interested in a lefty with a 4.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP? He needs to have a couple of good starts to have a real shot at a really nice return, but there's going to be interest in him (already is from the Mets).
  22. Salty has really dropped off since going to Texas. His top OPS in the majors since the trade is .716 and he's currently OPSing .753 in 211 PAs in AAA as a 25-year-old. Hypothetically, if they were to give him up for Nady, it would still be worth it, and maybe stick him in Iowa and try to convert him to 1B. I'd be very interested in a Nady for Salty swap and if he's having Ankiel/Glass-esque throwing issues, it might be realistic. He's not the top of the line guy that he was when the Braves dealt him, though. A move to first base would help his issues, but then the question is can he hit enough.
  23. It's about maximizing his value. You don't do that by trading him when he's at one of his lowest points of value. I'm not in favor of keeping him because he's great, I'm in favor of keeping him because I think we can get a better return in the offseason. Lilly's not mediocre. In Hendry's shoes, I'd try hard to trade Lilly, Silva and Nady. I'd offer DLee arbitration in the offseason (the picks would likely be better than the return for him at his current production) and I'd try hard to move Theriot and Kosuke in the offseason (along with whoever else I couldn't trade at the deadline). If Soriano hits another blistering streak before the deadline, a desperate team might bite if we pay enough of the contract (at least half, I'd say).
  24. Theriot will definitely have value around the league, but I think if all he has is batting average to offer in a season, he'll need to be higher than a .276 average to garner much in a trade.
