  1. Nobody else at all is reporting this that I can find, so either he's got the extremely early scoop or there's nothing to this.
  2. My guess is Cashner. He's been talked about as a future closer anyway and they could consider this a chance to get his feet wet in the role. Z is an option too to try to raise his value a bit again.
  3. I doubt there's a thing to the rumor, but for those wondering: Heisey is 26 years old and has a .296/.367/.459/.825 career minor league OPS. His best OPS in a minor league season was .900 at 24 years old between AA and AAA. I don't know any more than that, but those numbers don't thrill me.
  4. I hope they do the backwards hiring insomuch as they keep Rothschild and Jaramillo around. Both are respected enough around the league that I don't it would irritate a new manager and GM and both are a couple of the best coaches in the game. Otherwise I agree completely with you.
  5. It's way too early to be wondering whether Ricketts is a Cub fan or not. He probably just wants to see first-hand how Lou and Hendry operate for a year before making a decision on them. Frans aren't going to show at Wrigley and the Cubs aren't going to become more relevant (if they've lost long-term relevance) depending on who the GM and manager are. Fans will show up if the team wins and Lou and Hendry are not holding this team back from winning. Also, again, it's not going to have that much of a real effect firing Lou and Hendry right now. Unless Ricketss plans on promoting from inside for either position then the replacements for the season would be stopgap guys anyway and not likely large improvements (or improvements at all) over Lou/Hendry.
  6. I don't think that's confined to the Cubs only at all. Every team has players that take advantage of minor league pitching/hitters and put up huge minor league numbers but then don't translate the success to the majors.
  7. I'm actually finding other catchers to start over Soto without actually cutting him. Lou refuses to play him consistently, so I'm finding guys like George Kottaras and Kurt Suzuki to play until Lou decides to start Soto again. I recently picked up Suzuki in the league where I have Soto, until either Lou remembers who his starting catcher is or Lou is replaced. Yeah, that was my thinking too. I hate having a guy as productive as Soto on the bench, though (in fantasy and real life).
  8. I may have no idea what I'm talking about here since I didn't see the play, but isn't the penalty on a handball the automatic red card? So yes you delay the goal, but you're also playing a man down the rest of the game.

  10. I thought for a while about trying to buy low on Aramis. Then I decided not to.
  11. As I said, he's not going to sabotage the team. If he does, he's not going to get another GM job whereas right now he's respected enough around the game to at least garner interest from clubs. Even if Ricketts tells him he's going to fire him, the more good trades Hendry makes at the deadline, the more good he has going for him when he's looking for another job. It's a way to show he can find value in a trade.
  12. That's just one trade in many that he's pulled off. As others have mentioned, the Nomar, Ramirez/Lofton and Harden deals were all good. He also got Gorzelany last year without giving up anything. As for purely salary dumps, Walker for Ceda was a pretty good value. Barrett for Kyler Burke is looking better all the time. We got a serviceable reliever (Justin Berg) for Matt Lawton. I don't know why not. It's not like he's going to sabotage the franchise or anything. If he makes awful trades just to spite Ricketts, it'll make it harder for him to get another GM job.
  13. So you're not good at fantasy baseball? Marmol, Soto (if Lou would play him) and Soriano aren't bad fantasy options. Dempster is solid as well. Those are the three I have. My league doesn't count walks against pitchers, so Marmol is a gold mine. I also have Soriano and Lilly on the bench. And my team is in first place. I have Kosuke in an NL-only league on the bench and Castro in another league. I've got Soto in almost all my leagues and Marmol in a couple. And DLee and Lilly in one. I'm first in a couple of those leagues, middle of the pack in two and awful in a fifth.
  14. Hendry is good at trading. I'd be fine with him orchestrating a fire sale.

  16. Maybe we should send up smoke signals.
  17. When Ricketts began his African safari, it was reported that he told the front office members the direction he wants them to take the rest of the season. Shortly after he left, we started hearing the rumors that Kosuke was being offered for sale and now the rumors that a full-fledged fire sale may begin if the Reds take the series. My thought is that it's likely Ricketts instructed Hendry to sell, which would preclude any desperation type trades.
  18. There's some reason to believe they do see it. The rumors have been there that they've shopped Kosuke and that a poor showing against the Reds will lead to a fire sale. Hendry's a patient trader and generally pretty good at it. No sense in rushing to move players when waiting a bit might increase the return (or raise interest in some guys who have none now). We've still got 29 days until the trading deadline, might as well use them to maximize players' value.
  19. Thanks. Thought he was cut later than that.
  20. There's no hype in a 2.82 ERA/1.2 WHIP/510:198 K:BB in 7 minor league seasons. He had very good minor league numbers. They just haven't translated yet.
  21. Hendry's always been slow to trade away players. Even guys like Sosa and Bradley who it was obvious were going to be traded took the better part of the offseason each time. Between his patience and some of the big contracts he'll be trying to move, I wouldn't expect that much movement before the deadline.
  22. Honestly, a strict left/righty platoon between Baker and Fontenot could be pretty productive. We're just not doing that.
  23. So basically you're taking this year's team and adding Dunn and subtracting Lilly? Yea, sounds like a winner. I feel like should be able to improve at second base in the offseason, but I don't care enough to look up who's going to be available. This team is contending if we had normal years from Lee, Ramirez and Z. Dunn will take care of improving first base back to Lee's standards (or close) and I can't imagine both Aramis and Z being utterly awful again next year. And if they are atrocious again, we probably can't improve enough to contend. Also, there's really no upgrade out there at second on the FA market. Christian Guzman is one of the best middle infielders available this offseason. The biggest thing I don't like about the team I put together is defense. Dunn is a huge dropoff from Lee and Kearns being the platoon guy with Kosuke would give us awful OF defense against lefties. I think a really good top 6 spots in the order (and maybe 7) would overcome that, though.
  24. A potential team the Cubs could compete with in 2011: 1B: Dunn (3/36) BE: Font/Baker 2B: Font/Baker BE: Wellington Castillo 3B: Aramis (14.6) BE: Colvin SS: Castro BE: Wigginton (1/5) RF: Kosuke (14.5) BE: Kearns (1/1) CF: Byrd (5.5) LF: Soriano (19) C: Soto SP: Dempster (14.5) RP: Grabow (4.5) SP: Gorzelanny RP: Caridad SP: Wells RP: Gaub SP: Zambrano (18.875) RP: Stevens SP: Silva (12.75) RP: Marshall RP: Cashner CL: Marmol That gives you this lineup: Kosuke Soto Dunn Soriano Aramis Byrd Font/Baker Castro That team can contend and the payroll doesn't exceed $140. If you can pawn off Silva or Grabow, even better, but I don't know that we'll find the right deals for either. There's a lot in there I don't like, but that team could contend with a rebound from Aramis and Z and decent to good production from Soriano. If you can trade Silva or if Wells doesn't rebound, you have Jackson ready in AAA and you have Colvin to try to keep the old outfield healthy.
  25. You're right. I was looking only at the 2010-2014 payroll obligations on Cot's and it listed the $6.5 to Shark as an obligation (while showing the buyouts for Aramis and Silva). That probably means just $56 million invested for the 2012 season, then.
